nba threadView Messagesit really sucks “that no local station is carrying the pacers game tonight. it also really stinks that they choked in the fourth quarter. again.” 5:50:19 PM 4/21/03 “pacers by 8. that wont last. what the hell was thomas thinking last game, leaving al harrington on the floor with miller on the bench? al wasnt hitting spit, and reggie is the ultimate clutch shooter.” 9:19:18 PM 4/21/03 “well, this thread didnt garner much interest last time and it probably wont garner much interest this time, due to racists like nigal hahahahahahahahahahahahah artest sidelined for 4-6 weeks, maybe longer. damn! its a good thing they have a 6 game lead over detroit and new jersey, or id be worried.” 12:46:44 PM 2/20/04 “What happened? Did he throw a temper tantrum and get hurt in the process?” 12:50:23 PM 2/20/04 “Sorry don't like basketball.” 12:50:54 PM 2/20/04 “actually, wk, youre thinking of last years model. artest has only been ejected once from a game this season, and the nba later admitted that the ref who assessed him two back-to-back technicals over-reacted (due to his rep, im sure). artest is playing in control this year, thanks to the strong discipline that larry bird and rick carlisle have brought to the team.” 1:03:30 PM 2/20/04 Pretty Amazing! “Kobe Scores 81 Points in Win Over Raptors By JOHN NADEL, AP Sports Writer 4 hours ago LOS ANGELES - Kobe Bryant, often unstoppable, played at a higher level than even he imagined possible. The Los Angeles Lakers' star scored a phenomenal 81 points Sunday night _ the second-highest total in NBA history _ in a 122-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Only Wilt Chamberlain's storied 100-point game nearly 44 years ago ranks higher. "Not even in my dreams," Bryant said. "That was something that just happened. It's tough to explain. It's just one of those things. "It really hasn't, like, set in for me. It's about the `W,' that's why I turned it on. It turned into something special. To sit here and say I grasp what happened, that would be lying." The Lakers trailed by as many as 18 points early in the third quarter, angering Bryant. "He was ticked off," teammate Lamar Odom said. When asked what Bryant said at that stage, Odom replied: "Nothing. That's when it's bad." Bryant scored 51 points after the Raptors extended a 63-49 halftime lead to 71-53. The Lakers outscored the Raptors 38-14 to finish the third quarter to go ahead for good. "That was incredible, remarkable," Odom said. Bryant, the NBA's leading scorer, left to a standing ovation with 4.2 seconds remaining, having shot 28-of-46 from the floor, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range, and 18-of-20 from the foul line. With the 18,997 fans at Staples Center chanting "MVP! MVP!" Bryant made two free throws with 43.4 seconds remaining for his final points. He scored 27 points in the third quarter, 28 in the fourth.” 11:11:47 AM 1/23/06 “and most of this happened in the second half...if he would have been playing like that the first half he probably could have broke it” 11:28:47 AM 1/23/06 Bad Balls “The NBA has controversially introduced a new basketball for the first time in 35 years, prompting an obvious question: Why? MIAMI -- Heat center Shaquille O'Neal is no fan of the new basketballs to be used by the NBA this season, and isn't afraid to say so. I think the new ball is terrible," O'Neal said Monday. "It's the worst decision some expert, whoever did it, made. ... The NBA's been around how long? A hundred years? Fifty years? So to change it now, whoever that person is needs his college degree revoked. It's a terrible decision." he doesn't even know how old the nba is??!!...does he even have his degree??!! http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2610976” 7:00:36 AM 10/06/06 “I saw that report this morning. The funny thing is, he has already used the ball before during last years All-star game. If it really was that bad, wouldn't he have noticed it then?” 7:21:27 AM 10/06/06 “National Thugball Association. Sorry but some of the worst fights I have ever seen happen at Thugball games.” 7:39:51 AM 10/06/06 Oden out for upcoming season! 12:33:23 PM 9/13/07 “Going to the Warriors game tonight. First meeting of the Warriors and Mavs since we ousted them and their MVP in last year's first round of the playoffs! B-Son's school is the "school of the night" or something. We (about 40 of us) get in for free, get a tour of the arena, and get to sit courtside during warmups. Should be fun!!” 1:28:13 PM 11/08/07 “Woo-hoo, that was fun last night! We showed up at the Oracle Arena at about 5 PM, got waved through for free parking (!), then met up with the Warriors staff people who took us on a tour of the arena. We went through some of the "backstage" areas, like where the visiting team's family can hang out, where the TV people had their equipment set up, etc. Then we got to go out to the floor and sit courtside while the players from both the Warriors and Mavericks were warming up. I was sitting nearest the Mavs, so got to watch last year's MVP Dirk Nowitski or however you spel it. The guys were totally yucking it up, having fun. Until just about exactly 90 minutes before game time, when all of a sudden, their expressions got a lot more serious and the balls started dropping through the hoop a lot more. Also, Mark Cuban was hanging out near the players' bench with Cheryl Miller. About a half hour before game time, they led us to our seats, about 30 rows up from the floor at one end. The game was very exciting, with no team ever getting more than 7 points ahead, and the lead changing hands frequently. There were some incredible plays on both sides. For halftime entertainment, they put this big wall thing out on the court with a canvas hung from it, and an artist started dancing around and painting something to the tune of Santana's "Oye como va." At first, you couldn't tell what it was, but then you could tell it was a person's face. Pretty soon, you could recognize it - it was a portrait of Carlos Santana, who was sitting courtside! Then, Thunder, the Warriors mascot, came up to where we were sitting, and a couple minutes later they put us on the Jumbotron as the "Oracle School of the Week" or whatever they called us. The second half was just as exciting, as the game went down to the wire, with the Mavs winning by 4 or something. All in all, a fun night at the arena!” 8:23:53 AM 11/09/07 “It is so cool to have a really good NBA team in Boston again and be able to have some home town pride about the Celtics that isn't rooted in events a couple decades or more back. last edited: 11/10/07 6:41:13 PM” 6:34:05 PM 11/10/07 “The Celtics beat Detroit soundly in Detroit! The season isn't even at midway, but right now Kevin Garnet seems to have all the heart, brain and intensity of Larry Bird along with greater physical talent. What a great time to be a Boston Sports fan! Red Sox - Win World Series. Revolution - make it to Soccer finals, but lose a close one. Patriots - Record setting season. Celtics - best record in the NBA so far, and have the hottest streak at the moment. Yeah the Bruins are merely better than average this year, and Boston College is unlikely to end up in the top ten in football after all the bowl games are done. Right now, I'm just hoping things will be looking this good a month from now.” 7:41:41 PM 1/05/08 “We're going to the Jazz/Lakers game next Thursday on our way through Salt Lake City. Can't wait! It should be a good game.” 6:36:11 AM 3/13/08 “Comparing the East conference playoff teams to the West is a study in contrast. The West was hugely competitive and jam packed with great teams. * Golden State which didn't make the playoffs in the West has a better record than five of the eight teams that made the playoffs in the East and probably would have made third seed if it played in the East. *In the West, seven games seperate the top seed (Lakers) from the eight and last seed (Denver) seed in the West. In the East, seven games separate the first seed (Boston) from the second (Detroit), another seven separete second from third (Orlando) and another seven separate third from fourth (Cleveland). Anyway, I'm excited to see the Celts looking good. Rankings are at: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/standings;_ylt=AiWSA81zj2HXtAeECCF9YOCLvLYF” 7:29:55 PM 4/19/08 “I watched the Mavericks collapse in the second half again. I don't have a good feeling about this. All the locals are afraid of the Mavs, Stars and Cowboys all getting bounced out of the first round again this year. The Celtics are exciting. Good for them.” 6:44:52 AM 4/20/08 “Mark Cuban is bank rolling Chris Paul for Prez. in 2008, that'll get him off the court.” 7:14:42 PM 4/22/08 “Who cares.. It's basketball.. This is about the lamest sport since American Gladiator... Get a life.. Watch Hockey... 'fool” 8:01:41 PM 4/22/08 “I'll stick to watching basketball, where I can see the ball and tell who's who on the court. The Stars 3rd period the other night was pretty cool though.” 3:11:01 AM 4/23/08 “Effing Suns! All the talent in the world, just no heart against a team that has embarrassed them in the past, but who they beat in the regular season. 61 points in the 1st half, 35 in the second. The window is closing quickly! Nash and Shaq aren't getting any younger.” 10:58:58 AM 4/23/08 “Boston Sell-Tics are worrying me. Even before the playoffs started, I worried a little. What if they had a stellar regular season because of their work ethic, because they laid it all on the line almost every game and held nothing back? Maybe thats Garnett's story, too - almost never slacks off. This makes the team a bunch of extreme over-acheivers in the regular season. Most of the other teams have folks who go on cruise contral, give 60% in the regular season and then go into high gear in the playoffs. They have stuff in reserve and start playing their best. Celts are the same hard working very talented team, but they don't have much extra to give. I'm worrying if the Cavs can't catch 'em, Detroit definitely can.” 12:56:11 PM 5/11/08 “What did you say, again? Did b-oston get a 'big ticket' for having only one defensive player? last edited: 5/13/08 5:58:06 AM” 5:50:14 AM 5/13/08 “In the playoffs, the Celtics D has been outstanding at home and pretty good on the road. Their offense has really sputtered on the road though in these playoffs.” 6:33:21 AM 5/13/08 “Holy Moly what a game so far. Celtics up 79n - 59. All they can accomplish is to protect their home court advantage, but the pundits who picked the Lakers in 5 aren't looking good.” 8:05:25 PM 6/08/08 “If the Lakers could get their game on sometime earlier than the last few minutes... But you're right, the Celtics play some great D.” 5:22:59 AM 6/09/08 SWEET!!! “Yeah ToeJam - they put a real scare into me, the Celtics Barely held on. Seems like the two teams are so good that when either team relaxes and gets just a little comfortable the other team eats their lunch. Only way Celtics can win Sunday is if enough Lakers give up. Celts are beat up physically, Lakers have home court and know in their bones that can't let up. This could still go seven. I'm just glad the Lakers started coasting while the Celtics had enough time to do it. It's amazing that Jackson and the Lakers took so long to adjust to the Celts putting five good shooters on the floor.” 9:58:37 PM 6/12/08 “Ubuntu!” 2:53:13 AM 6/13/08 17 on the 17th (as #17 watches) “Ubuntu indeed! Very Sweet!” 9:12:41 PM 6/17/08 “The trifecta is now complete - too bad they didn't get the Stanley Cup as well. Has one city ever had such sucess in the same sports calendar year before?” 10:26:06 AM 6/18/08 “I thought Boston only won 2 of 3 championships this year.” 11:22:41 AM 6/18/08 “oh yeah, duh... i gave them credit for the super bowl.... still though - has another city had that level of success ever?” 11:30:39 AM 6/18/08 “Buffalo. Oh wait, none of that city's teams have won anything. 8D” 11:34:47 AM 6/18/08 “Not that many cities have 3, let alone 4 pro teams...we were trying to figure out the same thing a month or so ago though. Nobody we could think of has had 3 go in the same year. Saw Bill Belichick in the crowd last night - wondered if he was rooting for the Lakers :D I figure by the end he was thinking "Oh well...at least we aren't the Bruins". :D” 11:36:22 AM 6/18/08 “yeah, not that many cities have all the major sports.... lesseeee.... Denver LA Boston NY Miami Seattle (right?) Dallas (how close are the Rangers?) who else has at least three major league sports?” 11:49:01 AM 6/18/08 “New York 1969. The Mets won the World Series, the Jets won the Super Bowl and the Knicks won the NBA championship in 1970, but it was the 69/70 season Pittsburgh 1979. The Pirates won the World Series and the Steelers won the Super Bowl last edited: 6/18/08 11:57:28 AM” 11:50:57 AM 6/18/08 “Minnesota has 4, Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and whoever that hockey team is. Milwaukee has 2.5, Brewers, Bucks and .5 of the Packers (playing some games in Milwaukee).” 11:54:20 AM 6/18/08 “Detroit and Washington have 4 as well.” 11:59:18 AM 6/18/08 “And how could I forget the greatest year in sports ever. 1986, the Mets won the world Series and the Giants won the Super Bowl.” 12:05:06 PM 6/18/08 “I don't really remember much from 86, i was 18 that year.” 12:51:44 PM 6/18/08 “Does Boston have a hockey team? What about NASCAR?” 1:45:55 PM 6/18/08 “NASCAR ain't a sport! :) Boston has the Bruins.” 1:57:02 PM 6/18/08 “Toe: Nearest NASCAR track is 70 minutes away in New Hampshire. Yeah, Mike - but he meant professional hockey team (j/k)! Basically pro-Hockey is the odd sport out in Boston right now (Boston College won the '08 championships and has played in the last 3 championship games), the Bruins are mediocre. The "New England" teams - both in the Boston area - The New England Patriots and the New England Revolution (soccer) played in, but lost their championship games. The Boston teams - Red Sox and Celtics won their last games.” 2:07:46 PM 6/18/08 “Chicago: Cubs White Sox Bears (I think they are pro, but some would disagree) Blackhawk (Think that's right) Bulls” 2:38:45 PM 6/18/08 “18-1” 2:50:20 PM 6/18/08 “Tell me Crash, how does that compare with how the Colts did?” 2:54:50 PM 6/18/08 “;-) hehehehehehe” 3:02:06 PM 6/18/08 “the end of last night's game was deplorable.. a complete waste of gatorade... 'fool ('32oz)” 5:18:26 PM 6/18/08
