LOS ANGELES - Kobe Bryant, often unstoppable, played at a higher level than even he imagined possible. The Los Angeles Lakers' star scored a phenomenal 81 points Sunday night _ the second-highest total in NBA history _ in a 122-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Only Wilt Chamberlain's storied 100-point game nearly 44 years ago ranks higher.

"Not even in my dreams," Bryant said. "That was something that just happened. It's tough to explain. It's just one of those things.

"It really hasn't, like, set in for me. It's about the `W,' that's why I turned it on. It turned into something special. To sit here and say I grasp what happened, that would be lying."

The Lakers trailed by as many as 18 points early in the third quarter, angering Bryant.

"He was ticked off," teammate Lamar Odom said.

When asked what Bryant said at that stage, Odom replied: "Nothing. That's when it's bad."

Bryant scored 51 points after the Raptors extended a 63-49 halftime lead to 71-53. The Lakers outscored the Raptors 38-14 to finish the third quarter to go ahead for good.

"That was incredible, remarkable," Odom said.

Bryant, the NBA's leading scorer, left to a standing ovation with 4.2 seconds remaining, having shot 28-of-46 from the floor, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range, and 18-of-20 from the foul line.

With the 18,997 fans at Staples Center chanting "MVP! MVP!" Bryant made two free throws with 43.4 seconds remaining for his final points. He scored 27 points in the third quarter, 28 in the fourth.”

B-Son's school is the "school of the night" or something. We (about 40 of us) get in for free, get a tour of the arena, and get to sit courtside during warmups. Should be fun!!”

“Woo-hoo, that was fun last night!

We showed up at the Oracle Arena at about 5 PM, got waved through for free parking (!), then met up with the Warriors staff people who took us on a tour of the arena. We went through some of the "backstage" areas, like where the visiting team's family can hang out, where the TV people had their equipment set up, etc. Then we got to go out to the floor and sit courtside while the players from both the Warriors and Mavericks were warming up. I was sitting nearest the Mavs, so got to watch last year's MVP Dirk Nowitski or however you spel it. The guys were totally yucking it up, having fun. Until just about exactly 90 minutes before game time, when all of a sudden, their expressions got a lot more serious and the balls started dropping through the hoop a lot more. Also, Mark Cuban was hanging out near the players' bench with Cheryl Miller.

About a half hour before game time, they led us to our seats, about 30 rows up from the floor at one end.

The game was very exciting, with no team ever getting more than 7 points ahead, and the lead changing hands frequently. There were some incredible plays on both sides.

For halftime entertainment, they put this big wall thing out on the court with a canvas hung from it, and an artist started dancing around and painting something to the tune of Santana's "Oye como va." At first, you couldn't tell what it was, but then you could tell it was a person's face. Pretty soon, you could recognize it - it was a portrait of Carlos Santana, who was sitting courtside!

Then, Thunder, the Warriors mascot, came up to where we were sitting, and a couple minutes later they put us on the Jumbotron as the "Oracle School of the Week" or whatever they called us.

The second half was just as exciting, as the game went down to the wire, with the Mavs winning by 4 or something.

All in all, a fun night at the arena!”

“It is so cool to have a really good NBA team in Boston again and be able to have some home town pride about the Celtics that isn't rooted in events a couple decades or more back.

Patriots - Record setting season.
Celtics - best record in the NBA so far, and have the hottest streak at the moment.

Yeah the Bruins are merely better than average this year, and Boston College is unlikely to end up in the top ten in football after all the bowl games are done.

Right now, I'm just hoping things will be looking this good a month from now.”

“Boston Sell-Tics are worrying me. Even before the playoffs started, I worried a little. What if they had a stellar regular season because of their work ethic, because they laid it all on the line almost every game and held nothing back? Maybe thats Garnett's story, too - almost never slacks off. This makes the team a bunch of extreme over-acheivers in the regular season.

Most of the other teams have folks who go on cruise contral, give 60% in the regular season and then go into high gear in the playoffs. They have stuff in reserve and start playing their best. Celts are the same hard working very talented team, but they don't have much extra to give. I'm worrying if the Cavs can't catch 'em, Detroit definitely can.”

“In the playoffs, the Celtics D has been outstanding at home and pretty good on the road. Their offense has really sputtered on the road though in these playoffs.”

Seems like the two teams are so good that when either team relaxes and gets just a little comfortable the other team eats their lunch. Only way Celtics can win Sunday is if enough Lakers give up. Celts are beat up physically, Lakers have home court and know in their bones that can't let up. This could still go seven.

I'm just glad the Lakers started coasting while the Celtics had enough time to do it. It's amazing that Jackson and the Lakers took so long to adjust to the Celts putting five good shooters on the floor.”

Basically pro-Hockey is the odd sport out in Boston right now (Boston College won the '08 championships and has played in the last 3 championship games), the Bruins are mediocre.

The "New England" teams - both in the Boston area - The New England Patriots and the New England Revolution (soccer) played in, but lost their championship games. The Boston teams - Red Sox and Celtics won their last games.”
