Tea's Ya'll thread made me remember all the regional differences in language I've experienced in my travels, most noticable at places like the national 4-h conference, with people from all across the country all atempting to communicate with one another. The biggest one would be pop and soda, and the occasional coke. What do you guys say in your region, I know there's been studies on the topic too, i'm just wondering.

And then there's Ya'll, the canadian eh? Supper v. Dinner, and the most annoying, what's that game called, where you sit in a circle and go around... duck, duck... and chase each other when that one word comes up... what's that? lol, and you better not say goose.

I just find the regional differences in language to be ammusing

You didn't read the rest of the thread. Y'all is how it's spelled.

Down here, everything is a Coke, or a soft drink.

True, soda seems to be the most common in Florida. That's what we always called it growing up. However, I did pick up on calling it "pop" since a lot of my friends in New York (who were from Boston) called it that. My brother looks at me strange and chuckles everytime I say pop.

I said it on the other thread, but I love how Bostonians call water fountains "bubblahs". That cracks me up! Everything is also "wicked" something or other.

Another thing here in Florida and the south is saying "fixing to" instead of "getting ready to". That got me a lot of strange looks when I moved up to New York 6 years ago. :-)

no matter what the soft drink is in the south it's labeled as coke. Doesn't matter if it's sprite or sunkist orange..get me a coke!
I had discussion with my old school dispatcher that said lunch was something he had on a picnic, his dinner was my lunch and my dinner was his supper

Pop, what a funny word...

It makes me think of a family sitting on a southern style porch clad in overalls and straw hats. Pop has this 1920s feeling to me.

I'm a soda person, but generaly I ask for a Pepsi or a Coke.

stovestomper, Barq's in the old glass bottles was better than that in the can or plastic. I rarely see it anymore in glass.

You nailed it....in Lower Alabama and Southern Mississippi, everything is a coke. It can be grape, orange, pepsi, sprite, or any other flavor, but when you want one,,,,you want a "Coke".

I learned soda in Pa and I always stuck with it.

I look at people funny when they say pop. Pop is a sound not a beverage, silly people.

I heard a story about soda pop being called pop because of the sound soda pop cans made when you opened them. Not sure if it's true, you tell me.

Grew up with pop in NY state. Changed to soda in TX. Put up with Coke in NC, but it was still soda. Whenever I hear the word pop, it sounds pretty funny. I hardly ever hear anyone say fixin' to or y'all in NH.

It's POP here in B.C. And if you ask for a Coke you might get any cola, so I usually ask to make sure that it's actually Coke. Also, It's dinner usually not supper.

But, with so many people from so many places, and a lot of British heritage, pretty much anything goes in Vancouver.

I've never heard of that game simer. Is that supposed to be a Canadian thing?

lyra it's cheese, tomato, olives, onion, green pepper, and pickles with your choice of ham, salami, tuna or just veggies on a long roll. With oil and salt and pepper.

My favorite is tuna - in Maineiac it's "tuner EYE-talian."
