While searching for a new backpack for my brother-in-law's birthday gift, I came across a great deal going on at EMS. I purchase the EMS Ascent 4700 ($149), Solstice sleeping bag ($89), and EMS Crash pad ($55). All three items are being sold as a package deal and only cost me $149-total !!! It's like they're given away the stuff for free! Now the bro will get a sleeping bag with his new backpack and I get to keep the sleeping pad!

Cool deal! Did you get an EMS Club Day card in the mail? This Friday and Saturday, everything is 20% off if you belong to any outdoor club. I hear that it is very flexible as far what you belong to.

the gear slut scores at EMS!
It's club day today and tomorrow at EMS. Everything is 20% off if you claim to be a member of any outdoor association.

I scored a $350 Garmin Etrix Vista for $230. $70 off for club day and a $50 rebate from Garmin. Yeehaaa!

Very cool Pennsy! What color is that one. I forget the name of mine but it is blue, I love it!

Tango - the Vista is metallic. I think the blue one is the legend. A guy I know at EMS let me borrow his instructional video for it. Now I have to learn how to use the darn thing.

In my neck of the woods it's just 20% off, no membership needed.
Stuff on the clearance rack is 30% off plus 20% off .

I got baskets for my Leki poles, Backpackers Panty Huevos Rancheros, a tank top, the EMS Aqua Day Hydration Pack, and from the clearance rack, Dry line tights and a tekware top.

Yeah, when I worked at EMS, we accepted AAA cards, and if someone was "looking" for a card in his wallet, we just asked what club it was. Sometimes it took them a moment to come up with a name. The intention was to offer a good deal to our best customers and try to influence them to join an outdoors club, which often lobbies for land preservation or does other things we all like.

Oh yeah, I looked at the Long Trails pack that they have as a package deal. By itself, it lists for $120 and weighs in at 4 1/2 lbs, plus or minus, depending if you got sm, med, or lg. My current pack, same size and roughly the same pockets, from Beans, is 7 lbs.

Then I looked in my wallet.... ever seen a grown man cry.

"ever seen a grown man cry?"

How about on my knees and uncontrollable bawling?? I just got a nice letter from the IRS slam dunking my 2001 tax return.

Hey Pete - I need a gps just to find the trailheads whenever I go on trips with you.

I'm surprised Twigeater didn't chew me out. Just a few weeks ago I told her that this "inspector gadget" has no desire to get a GPS.

It's not too late to get out to EMS today. You don't even need a membership card. There is just a form where you write down the club.

I'm counting on you to lead me on some "three hour tours" with that thing this summer - I'll get to tell the stories now, LOL!

Yuck.. you're working today Twigster? Wanna borrow my GPS to find your way out of the office?

btw - when he go to Baxter this summer, I'm gonna throw away the maps and compass and rely totally on the GPS to get us through the 8 days. Soooo, you better bring a month's worth of food with you.

I saved $60 at EMS on Friday afternoon!

I was very proud of this exercise in home economics!

I saved all this money by buying:

1) EMS hyrdation pack 2100 cubic inches plus 100 oz Platypus
2) Marmot Fanny pack
3) gaiters for my wife
4) ANkle gaiters for me (may return these, don't really work with my light hiking shoes)

5) compass
6) jerky
7) cool hiking shorts
8)smart wool socks
9)iodine
10)first aid kit

Ouch... work and a trip to the airport kept me from the EMS members day sale. I suppose making money is better for me than spending it.

But wait, a penny save is a penny earned and at 20% savings - I could have earned a lot more money per hour by saving it than by working for it. Darn!
