I'm trying to plan a trip to the Aderondaks and the White Mountains but I was wondering when is the black fly season for both these places? I do want to avoid these guys, I've never exoerienced them myself but I've heard horror stories about them.

Mapleleaf informed me that it is from April 16 to May 16. That is why she re-scheduled our canoe trip to later in the season...

Blackflies Are Eeeeeeeeeevil
Altitude also is a factor. There will be blackflies up on the mtns when they are scarce in the lowlands.

I encountered many blackflies in late August/early Sept around the wet areas on the Dix Mtn range.

I was there last July 4th weekend and the black flies were out in full force.

I went again in late August/early September and they were not around at all.

I guess it all depends.

One nice thing about the Black flies is that they go in at night, when the mosquitos come out. I was in the Catskills last may 20 something and they were killer, especially on the peaks. The wind tended to blow them away, but they took shelter on your downwind side and bite you.

Basically, I'd say those dates are a good rough estimate but it varies in intensity from one area to another. A cheap bug net, gloves, long sleeve shirt & pants can't hurt to carry in your pack. 98% DEET helps feed "the Adirondack Bird" too. You'll learn the "Adirondack Shuffle" too. Just keep moving in the rough area's & take breaks when/where there is a breeze.

I betting they'll be out to the END of May this year. They need running water to hatch and there's tons of it this year. Plus, we are a little late in Spring coming this year.

June is black fly month. This means, depending on conditions, the latter part of May to the beginning of July.

You're right Gremlin- I slipped. I musta been wandering cause I shoulda said they start getting nasty around Memorial day. With over 150 yrs. of family history in the daks - I shoulda known better. But I think they may be a little extree thick this year.
