The giardia diet. A great way to lose pounds fast!

But just to add to the yuck factor -- according to the National Park Service the largest source of parasites and other fecal contaminants in backcountry waterways is humans, not livestock or wildlife.

Funny that the author didn't bring up simple boiling.

Other studies have shown that the number one cause of getting gerdia in your system is from poor hygene and specifically the lack of washing hands after a poop in the woods.

So wash your hands and drink smart!

Straight up is Best
I had giardia once ( and that was enough ) and I got it from city water in Montpelier Vt. Out in the woods I filter my water sometimes and drink it straight sometimes. I make the call based on judgement. If it's icy cold water trickling, shooting out of a crack in a rock at high elevation I'm drinking it straight. If it's a good size stream where beavers could be living, deer drinking, etc., I'm pumping. This has worked well for my 32 years of backpacking.

Your right about the hand washing thing but gardia gets blamed a bit more then it should.... heavy exercise, stress and changing diet can all trigger a bout of the runs.

I have to consider this was written for non-backpackers and hikers. I don't think doctors get out too much these days. The last time my doc went on vacation was right before 911. He was stuck in Las Vegas for an extra week. Hasn't been on a vacation since.

I think the big point the article is trying to make..but for some reason they leave out the "clincer paragraph or though"...is that the trend among long distance hikers..especially the AT is that many choose to forgo any type of treatment for their water...

Thats prolly not from the water. They breed and cross breed those fish so much that they are bound to come up with birth/or spawn defects once in awhile.
