4.9 Equake in NE AlabamaView Messages“At about 4 am I felt my 1st Earthquake ever. I live about 1:20 from the town of Fort Payne, which is where most of the activity occured. I'm really curious if I'll get the chance to go out and look at damage through my job. Motion Map” 7:42:26 AM 4/29/03 “How far is 1:20? Southern Rock!” 7:52:26 AM 4/29/03 “My bad. I live about 1 hour and 20 minutes away. It's about 75 miles.” 7:55:44 AM 4/29/03 “I was wondering who might live in this area. Where's StoveStomper? And Mr. and Ms. Opie?” 7:58:05 AM 4/29/03 “That's pretty big, especially for the SE!” 8:00:34 AM 4/29/03 “Miss Opie is in Huntsville, which is maybe 50 miles West. I'm SSW from the site. Stove Stomper is on the MS Gulf Coast. Miss Opie, Father Goose, bitpusher, and MDS are closest. MDS lives maybe 35 miles away.” 8:01:04 AM 4/29/03 “The building codes are changing across the country and it's having a huge effect in the SE. The seismic forces that buildings have to be designed for is going up 4x. Maybe that's not quite so ridiculous(actually it is), but it'll now make it an easier conversation with the architect.” 8:03:10 AM 4/29/03 “Dang lizs, I didn't know you cared! ;) I'm 7:48 away toward the coast. Didn't feel a thing.” 8:03:35 AM 4/29/03 “Everything's fine here in Huntsville. It woke my wife and I up. We thought it was a small thunderstorm moving through at first. As we went back to sleep, I thought, "Hey, that might have been an earthquake," and I found out this morning that it was.” 8:10:53 AM 4/29/03 “Just a matter of time before the New Madrid fault slips again. The last time it happened, the Mississippi River flowed backwards for two days. Only one high rise in Memphis is designed to withstand a serious earthquake.” 8:14:28 AM 4/29/03 “Holy crap! I bet nobody down there went to work today..."Hello boss? I can't make it in to the grain elevator today. I gotta stay home an' prop the three legged couch back up and get my cars back up on blocks.".” 8:30:25 AM 4/29/03 “LMAO @ nigal” 8:31:28 AM 4/29/03 “Good one, Nigal! I was waiting for someone to take that path.” 8:32:45 AM 4/29/03 “4.9? Kindergarten stuff” 8:33:55 AM 4/29/03 “There are some areas near the epicenter that don't have power this morning, so I guess that could have happened too...” 8:33:57 AM 4/29/03 “Hey, when I see the need for a d i c khead Yankee coment I take one for the team and let the ignorance fly. Can you think of a better representative for the job? 8P” 8:35:17 AM 4/29/03 “I know 4.9 is low, but we don't build buildings the way you guys do out West. It's a matter of money. Your building cost at least 2/3 more than they do out here.” 8:36:00 AM 4/29/03 “I would think 4.9 would feel like a case of indigestion to Phil!” 8:36:08 AM 4/29/03 “It's good to see you're not discriminatory in your prejudices, Nigal!” 8:38:03 AM 4/29/03 “arclite normally fills the obnoxious Yankee role. Thanks for filling in Nigal.” 8:41:10 AM 4/29/03 “some crazy dude said he felt it here in columbia sc.” 8:41:16 AM 4/29/03 “LMAO @ you guys! well, i'm glad everyone here is okay. relatively speaking. ;-)” 8:41:44 AM 4/29/03 “Equal opportunity dique...that's me!” 8:42:12 AM 4/29/03 “There was a 4.8 magnitude quake in Puget Sound on Friday and it didn't seem to make the news. I imagine it's quite an event in Alabama, though.” 8:46:52 AM 4/29/03 “i didn't feel it cause i sleep like a log. I was surprised to find out that there is a pretty big faultline around East Tennessee.” 8:52:33 AM 4/29/03 “It was an event here. It made all of the hound dogs come out from under the porch! The map I linked above shows that it was felt all the way up into KY.” 8:54:01 AM 4/29/03 “Did it knock over any of those fishin' poles propped upside the crick?” 8:58:18 AM 4/29/03 “We had one about a month ago here on the GA/SC border. I forget where the epicenter was, it was a 4.something-or-other. I slept through it. If they hadn't been talking about it at work the next day I never would have known about it. I used to live in California and I guess I'm a bit immune to them. They said it was felt over in Columbia, SC though.” 9:09:20 AM 4/29/03 “Ya best go check on the still, ya here.” 9:28:01 AM 4/29/03 “LOL @ Phil Yeah, I was laying in bed about 4am and heard the rumbling noise and then my bed starting shaking...I was wondering what my wife was doing over there... LMAO” 9:54:42 AM 4/29/03 10:04:48 AM 4/29/03 “Cue Carole King....” 10:06:18 AM 4/29/03 I slept right through it. “I noticed that my empty beer can pyramid had toppled, but I figured one of the dogs had done it. Yes - I can sleep through the sound of 960 beer cans crashing onto the hardwood floor...” 10:12:04 AM 4/29/03 “And a one and a two...... I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down I feel my heart start to trembling Whenever you're around.......” 10:13:11 AM 4/29/03 “I couldn't get "Anticipation" out of my head. I suppose that one could apply as well, if we were waiting for aftershocks.” 10:22:26 AM 4/29/03 “LOL @ bit. This might be the little one before the big one.” 10:27:12 AM 4/29/03 “Dat's de one, Stomper! Now I'm having visions of French Fries and Catsup! Must be getting close to lunchtime.” 10:40:10 AM 4/29/03 “Phil's right. 4.9 wouldn't even get us out of bed! ;) wow, what i wouldn't give to relive my first quake... i barely remember it.” 11:30:52 AM 4/29/03 “The quake did $650,000 in civic improvements.” 12:01:32 PM 4/29/03 12:15:08 PM 4/29/03 “Earph go slammy In Al-a-bammy” 2:09:37 PM 4/29/03 “Wonder how many hicks are still hiding in their root cellars, thinking it was terrorists attacking Alabama.” 2:22:10 PM 4/29/03 “About the same number who pray for God to bring the sun back during an eclipse.” 2:26:24 PM 4/29/03 “Ooooo, that's cold!” 2:27:44 PM 4/29/03 “I never said that there weren't any...” 2:29:53 PM 4/29/03 “LOL, good one bit!” 2:30:12 PM 4/29/03 “In Alabama, they don't call them "root cellars",,,,they are called "storm houses".” 2:31:30 PM 4/29/03 “Good one bit. I was in college during the first Gulf War. My physics prof was a Japanese man in his mid 60's. That would put him as being a teenager during WWII. The chimes are tested the first Wed of every month since it's the tornado alarm. This man had taught at UA since the 60's. We were in class one Wed when the alarm went off. This man yells "Airraid" and actually ran out of the roof. He thought Hussein was bombing the UA campus. Another story that I've told on here before. On 9/10/01 I had a civic club mtg and the speaker was from the Anniston Army Deport. 30 miles from me is one of the largest stockpiles of chemical weapons in the world. They are to be incinerated soon. This was a guy talking about the evac routes should something happen. He said that the most dangerous time was now, before the weapons were destroyed. The worst thing that could happen was for a plane to crash into one of these silos. We know what happened less than 24 hrs later. Talk about a pucker factor the next day. Yeah, I thought Alabma could be attacked.” 2:34:58 PM 4/29/03 “oops, ran out of the room!” 2:35:43 PM 4/29/03 “Oh. That's a much nicer ending than the first one.” 2:37:15 PM 4/29/03
