Back in the day, just about 100 years or so, it was perfectly acceptible for all ages to drink alchol, as the drinking water couldn't be trusted. Going back a little further, teh drinking water was so questionabible that the Americas drank more booze than all ofthe rest of the civilized world. If you ever wonder just what the hell were they thinking abck then, you now have yer answer. They were plastered!” 8:11:28 AM 9/30/04 “So Laqtose is admitting that the water has gotten better sense Bush took office? LOL! I keed! I keed!” 8:39:44 AM 9/30/04 “I agree with those that think the 'limeade' should have been tested and tasted before serving to children. Anything 'leftover' should be checked before use. It very well could have been spoiled causing food poisoning and possible death, and it could have been a 'project'. I checked what appeared to be water from a refrigerator once and found it was photo fixer, nasty stuff. The principal may not have known about it but the position makes the principal ultimately responsible for everything in that school (unless of course it is GWB's fault). That said, I do not think one sip of margarita mix is going to irreparably harm most children. It was a cheap lesson in cafeteria awareness. Unfortunately the school seemed to get the wrong message with their 'no alcohol' response, rather than testing what they are about to serve to the children.” 8:50:04 AM 9/30/04 “Manuka, that's what I'm saying--I think in Michigan if you cater a banquet in a public hall, you are NOT allowed to use left overs to cater something else....(don't know what the restrictions are elsewhere) In fact, my friend works at a High end hotel, and the policy is that any leftover food served at an event must be discarded... It's part of the health and food safety guidelines. One restaurant used to serve "all-you-can-eat" chicken dinners with lots of food waste. Their employees would take the leftovers home. The health department shut that down because of the likelihood of food poisoning or spreading disease....” 10:19:05 AM 9/30/04 “The booze fridge in our staff room is left locked. At one after school piss up about twenty years ago (can we use youth as an excuse?) the union rep mentionned there would be a big holiday bash for trustees (is that the correst U.S. term?), administrators and union delegates. No sooner said than we were unscrewing the hinges on the big (and locked) fridges in the cafeteria and stealing/drinking the booze. It's a wonder I'm still working, I guess.” 10:37:45 AM 9/30/04 “I agree, manuka. It is policy in Michigan schools that no booze is allowed on site, no matter what the function is. well, I'll rephrase that by saying in the district I used to work at, there was no booze at any event. I'm real suprised that booze was allowed on site in this case, even more suprised that someone didn't gank it to take home!” 10:56:44 AM 9/30/04 “Hell at the Catholic school in my town they throw a great big bingo kegger a couple times a year to raise money. They party right on school grounds.” 10:58:50 AM 9/30/04 “At our fund raiser casinos and spaghetti dinners and now a bowling day, we make our money on the bar. At our grad, kids bring their families and there is an open bar. The school provides bus transportation to the after ball camping bash and there are no cars there to drive. Family picks the kids up the next day. (But this is Québec.)” 11:03:22 AM 9/30/04 “Yah, my kids go to a Catholic school too, and every year they have a big Silent Auction as a fundraiser, with an open bar. Best part of sending my kids to a Catholic school, I tell ya.” 11:05:01 AM 9/30/04 “They should have a bachelorette auction and action off dates with the nuns. ChaChing!” 11:07:51 AM 9/30/04 “Well, if it were me, I'd be a little frustrated that they ran out of milk and served something not knowing what it was. Not so much because it was booze - most kids think it tastes nasty and refuse it anyway - as the letter said. Glad I'm not the principal though, somebody will wind up being fired for this and it probably won't be the idiot that opened the fridge and said "Hey, lets give'em this stuff".” 11:09:01 AM 9/30/04 “I see the big problem as being "they ran our of milk". WTF is a school doing running out of milk?” 11:11:29 AM 9/30/04 On a serious note... “I agree with Roam. Some Native kids died in Labrador while on a piss-up in a shack a couple of years ago. They ran out of booze and drank blue anti-freeze that they thought was booze. As an aside, the ONLY useful thing I learned from my Education courses was that you NEVER, EVER show kids a film or anything else without watching it first. TRhat should apply doubly to food and drink, I should think.” 11:13:27 AM 9/30/04 “Gremlin-- I agree-- When Jurassic Park came out a few years ago, it was heavily marketed towards kids. I don't have kids, but when I did see the movie I was appalled-- It seeemed far too gory and scary to be marketed towards 5-year-olds! The same rule (of previewing) should also go to books, magazines and websites... As an artist, I like to work with students--and let some of them look through my art books... However, as you well know, many "masters" and "masterpieces" contain nudity--which might be okay for a college student, but would not be acceptable to the parent of an under 18 student.” 12:57:56 PM 9/30/04 “Nigal, the funny thing is, they do auction off a dinner with the priests and the nun who works there.” 1:01:49 PM 9/30/04
