Life sucks! It sucks when a young man who had been through drugs, who had a troubled begining but who had turned his life around to do good work for the CCC, who had so much to be proud of now at age 22, who was giving himself the chance to do well should die suddenly and without warning from an anerisem :( He was as close as a brother and I am very heartbroken by his loss. I grew up with him and will miss him dearly. He was working on a salmon habitat restoration project that was winning him awards...LIFE SUCKS.

Free...

Don't look this as the end of his life, look at it as his graduation.

I believe that we all have task's to do and things to learn while were here, when our job is done and we have learned what we were supposed to learn, we get to leave.

I do believe that the next place we go is better then this one, the problem for those we leave behind is... we can't leave this one alive.

It is a shock, and life can seem cruel. Try to celebrate his life and the good he did while he was here. Think to the positive lessons you learned from him. And carry the warm memories through your own life. I think if you do this you will have honored him, and you will have found some solace.

Man these are the hard pills to swallow. No one gets a phone call about grandma dieing and says, wow what a shock.” But when a friend calls and says that so and so who is your age, it knocks you on your ass. I had a friend who was 27 and died in an industrial explosion. I still remember one of our last times together. 4th of July weekend we are cruising in the Jeep with the top down, drinking beers and having a great time going to the lake. We were talking about how we were never going to get old and my buddy high fived me as he said, “Man, I’m staying 18 forever (even though he was already 27 at that time he was 18 at heart)!”. You know, a real Thelma and Louise moment. I still miss him.

Life can be hard and confusing sometimes. We just have to enjoy the moments we have together with each other.

I know it sucks. But with my brother we knew he would pass away, even expectd it for years.
I was thinking about what mtsteve said of graduation- and I think I will get some blue and white flowers for the service (the colors of his high school graduation.) At least he died having fun. His mom said he had felt no pain, nor knew any fear, he just went. He was at the Gym with his friends at the time so at least he wasnt alone either.

That sounds like the way to do it... like throwing a switch.

That's really sad!

There is some consolation that he went without pain, doing what he loved and that he died after having cleared himself of much of the residue of his troubled begining.

(Salmon eh? My sister is writing her dissertation on the Salmon in the Pacific Northwest - I hope your friend's project and the Pacific Salmon will live on.)

Sorry to hear that, Free. I don't know you but it sounds like you've been through a lot lately.

Last weekend a friend at the top of Mammoth Mountain and was crying. She spent Easter with her mom, and on Monday her mom passed away. She had broken her ankle, and a blood clot went to her heart, or something like that. She was 54. My friend needed friends and hugs and we were there for her.

I live 1 mile from my parents, but hardly ever see them. I'm going there tonight. This made me realize I don't see my parents enough.

If you can, go for a hike and be with friends. I remember that helped when you lost your brother.

Like Nigal said:

Snow Nymph: I live 5 miles from my folks and drive by their house every night. Tonight I'll stop in. Thanks for the suggestion...

Makes me realize I haven't spent enough time with my family either. What a shame we all get so busy and don't have time for the important people in our lives.

Free, I'm so sorry for your lose. I lost a very close friend when I was a child. She had epilepsy and suffered a massive coronary during a seizure.

Just take comfort in the fact that he had some happiness in his life and cherish the time you had together. And never forget him and what his friendship meant to you.

Free...a lady I know died suddenly last week. The same way your friend died. It was very shocking to me but a gentle reminder...we only have today. I had thought the week before "I need to get to know Judy better"...but I put it off and now I lost the opportunity. So we need to make each day count the best we can.

Treebeard just lost his Aunt. we were driving to a day hike Sunday with a couple of people in the car with us, when i got the call from his Mom. It was so sad.
But from it, we have spoken to many family memebers that we have not spoken to in years. so with the bad comes some good.
I lost my best friend when at the age of 29. it is too young.

Sorry for your loss free.

Me too
My next-door neighbor, 35 yrs. old passed away last Wed. also. He had a bout with melanoma for several years and last October it had spread to his brain. He had 3 surgeries to remove tumors from his brain but finally said he’d had enough. He had a very active and good life.

The family had been here since November and we all grew quite close. I took care of all of the small things like the yard and made them dinners when I had the chance. He was a good man and I feel fortunate to have known him.

Damn cancer!
