France Ready to Help in Rebuilding Iraq
Wed Apr 30, 6:26 PM ET

By KIM HOUSEGO, Associated Press Writer

PARIS - Eager to help rebuild Iraq (news - web sites), France has sent a diplomat to Baghdad despite U.S. resistance to a prominent French role, the foreign minister said Wednesday.

"France wants to be present at the side of the Iraqi people," Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin said. He added that Paris wanted to take the initiative under the supervision of the United Nations (news - web sites) but was moving ahead to lay the groundwork.

"In this spirit, a French diplomat has been in Baghdad since Monday to evaluate the means of resuming our activities and restarting our cooperation," de Villepin said. He did not identify the diplomat.

The diplomat in Iraq is evaluating several issues, including security and humanitarian needs, to see how France might cooperate, said a French diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

It was not clear how long he would stay or whether others would follow.

France opposed the U.S.-led push for war in Iraq and threatened to use its veto in the U.N. Security Council to block military action.

Last week, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Robert A. Bradtke said Washington was not interested in giving countries that opposed the U.S.-led invasion a major part in reconstruction.

De Villepin, however, said it was time to work together for lasting peace in the Middle East.

In post-Saddam Hussein Iraq, "we all share the same objectives and the same principles," he said. "We must now together build peace."

De Villepin said the world should guarantee stability in Iraq to "permit the Iraqi people to recover as soon as possible their full sovereignty."

The foreign minister did not spell out exactly how France plans to contribute to the reconstruction, nor how it intends to overcome American and British resentment over its opposition to the war.

French-U.S. relations will recover, if only "out of necessity," De Villepin said. "We have to work together, the problems (of the region) are beyond the capacity of just one power."

De Villepin said France had not swayed from the belief that the Iraq war was unnecessary, and that Saddam could have been disarmed peacefully.

Nevertheless, he said he was "rejoiced" by the collapse of Saddam's regime.

My assessments:

1. Screw you France, you days of lapdoging the US are OVER!

2. "France wants to be present at the side of the Iraqi people," - as long as they don't have to do any work or make any sacrifices, that is.

3. "The diplomat in Iraq is evaluating several issues, including security and humanitarian needs, to see how France might cooperate..." Security?, security?..... hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Cooperate?, cooperate?..... hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
--good one France!

4. "Washington was not interested in giving countries that opposed the U.S.-led invasion a major part in reconstruction" Amen brother!

5. In post-Saddam Hussein Iraq, "we all share the same objectives and the same principles," he said. "We must now together build peace." - This is not true because no matter how badly we whopped the Iraqi army, they put up 1,000,000,000 times more fight that France would have. Also, I don't think it is a good idea to tell newly freed Iraq that they have no honor, backbone, and are backstabbing worthless bastards.

6. "De Villepin said the world should guarantee stability in Iraq to "permit the Iraqi people to recover as soon as possible their full sovereignty." - Uh, lets see, what could France do to help anyone regain their full sovereignty? hmmmmmmm, I guess call the United States and ask them to bail them out, they have much experience in that right?

Basically, we don't need the lapdog anymore, please stay home and eat cheese, the only thing you are actually good at.

We could really move forward a lot faster if we kicked some of these countries off our hind teets. Having France work at rebuilding a democracy is like taking your car to an auto lube place to have your engine overhauled. They know just enough to phuck it all up.

The French remind me of people who think hunting is cruel, yet won't hesitate to eat a hamburger or steak.

I don't like how the French acted, but they were only follwoing their national interest. What's worse, a country invading another to persue its goals, or a country trying to stop a country invading another to persue its goals?

Ha! How 'bout this, Pierre:

"There is a peace that can only be found on the other side of war."
~Not sure who

That's the kind of peace that currently exists in Iraq.

If you'll have no part in the down and dirty, you sure ain't deserving of the gravy.

it may be hard to see, but the upper part of the snakes mouth is missing. it lost it's lip because someone kept it in a very small metal cage and did not feed it right so it rubbed it away.
scary looking when you see the teeth...
