It took me 15 hours to dehydrate homemade spaghetti sauce, and I've made a real mess of my dehydrator!

But it's done and ready for Spring on the Sods!

Why did that take so long? It sounds like a long time. I end up chopping up the chunks and spreading the syuff thin to dry it faster. Is it homemade?

Maple did it effectively in 5 hours several times. Those cheesesteaks rotting your brain, Geo?

I don't have the inserts for the trays, so I had to use plastic wrap. That may have slowed things down by restricting airflow, but it still seems long. Also, I dried it desert dry, per Artex's instructions.

That's the trouble right there, Geo. Those inserts make your life so much easier...

Having used both, I have to agree with treebeard. Get the plastic insert trays Geo, they'll make your life so much easier.

All of it. Everything you do will be easier because of those trays, really. Just try it.

Well, I only have one, so my life's not that much easier. Maybe if I had 4, yah, that's it...

I have seen them there. I also have only the one that came with my dehydrator. I'm looking to buy more also, same reason. Anything I dehydrate on that one tray works out so much better than on the plastic wrap. Although, if you leave about a 1/2 inch airspace all around the outer edge and don't block the inner hole the plastic wrap's efficiency increases dramatically. The trays would be less hasstle, though.

bitpusher

Meperidine 50mg/Prometh 25mg. I quit taking them last week, they started making me puke pretty violently after a few days. That's nice on a spaghetti thread, don't you think?

That's what's great about TT. There's always that little surprise somewhere in the thread, sort of like the Crackerjacks prize!

Oh wow, that's the shizzit.

Why is it women get the serious pain meds and men get crap? They prescribed Lortab 5/500 (pretty much the same as above) after I had my gall bladder out, for Pete's sake. When my wife had our first baby, she got Tylenol 3's. Codeine, baby!

bit, they gave you pain pills? I looked liked someone had beat me with a baseball bat. I have never seeen so many shades of black and blue before.

Geo, you mentioned in another thread about which apples were the best to dehydrate...what were they.

I like the Fuji best, nice and crisp and nice balance between tart and sweet.
Geobeet

I dehydrate them until they get crisp, sort of like freeze-dried. About six hours.

you could take the acetaminophen out of that, bittypoo. then you'd have synthetic codeine. yay!

Geo, why don't you freeze dry Paregoric and extract the opium out of it. It appears you have some very willing customers on this thread...
treebeard

It probably took you so long to dry the sauce 'cuz it was too much on the one tray. Have 4 liners and if you rotate the trays it's ready in 4-6 hours.

Synthetic, shmynthetic. Gimme the real thing.

Ewker, I must be lucky or something, I haven't bruised at all.
bitpusher

Well, when I did it I used all the trays. One with the plastic tray liner, 3 with plastic wrap. The one with the plastic tray was done first, the others were a PIA. I'm getting the plastic trays.

Ummm...not to be unsympathetic there bitpusher, but what I had done was just a tad more extensive. I doubt anything less would have even put a dent in it.

Didn't mean to equate our situations, but I'm guessing that if I had open-heart surgery, all I'd get would be Lortab 7.5, lol...

Okay, I ordered four sheets from Nesco. Wally World carries dehydrators and jerky kits, but not the fruit roll sheets. Hopefully they will get to me by Friday. I was going to use second day air, but they want more for that than the damn trays are worth.

Ok, I'm fairly new to dehydrating. I've used mine on banana chips, apples etc, but I've never tried other foods like spaghetti suace or chili yet.

How long can you store something like chili, spaghetti or soup after you dehydrate it? Will it last a long time if you then freeze it, or does that get too much moisture back in it?
Indiana John

Actually, I usually freeze everything I dehydrate. It lasts longer. I seal in in zip bags, of course.

when you first started, how many times did you have to dehydrate apples or something else to get it right.

Apples are a breeze, You should have no problem the first time.

I seem to remember a fiasco with bananas though. I don't remember what went wrong.

First time's been the charm for me except the peach leather. I left it in a little too long the first time and it was a bit tough. Still good though so I don't really consider it a failure.
