“I have to agree with Chili about racism being a product of the home environment. My son goes to a mostly black and Puerto Rican school and he is one of very few whites there. And in his class, he is the only white. He has had his share of being picked on and alienated by his classmates (kids of all colors can be cruel, too). He doesn't have a lot of friends and fends for himself a lot. So, if any child I know has reason to start spewing racial hatred, he does. He was also brought up in a household where you don't hear racial slurs of any kind. I have never heard anything of that sort come out of his mouth. Why is that, if not for his upbringing?”

Georgia's pre-1957 flag was based on the Stars and Bars. The subsequent flag - which was discontinued a couple years ago - featured the St. Andrew's Cross.

All the various Confederate battle flags stir deep emotions within me - none of which are the least bit racially connected.

The design up for vote now is the pre-1957. Whatever... this current "ugliest state and/or provencial flag in North America" has got to go.

Governor Barnes was booted out of office for "strong arming". He not only ticked-off heritage groups, he ticked-off teachers. We teachers were more instrumental than any other group in getting rid of the man.

During preplanning a couple years ago, one of our counselors - who is black - conducted a mini workshop explaining that we should expect different (from white kids) behavior from our growing black enrollment. She was right.

“pedxing, I was referring to the fact that there are a lot of exclusive, private organizations out there that exclude on the basis of race, sex, religion, etc. Why should a private group not be allowed to decide that only white people may belong?”

“Pedxing, I was speaking mostly tongue in cheek, but I doubt that if I was a member of he NAACp that they would do any representing of me mor my causes. I suspect that I would be a name on the rolls of members. There are however a good many slights against males and whites and white males. Here in portland, they recently forced the local catholic boys school to allow girls, but do not force the girls catholic school to allow boys.

I guess my big point is that 'everyone" says "I'm being discriminated against" but no one wants to recognize the discrimination against whites or white males or males. Look at the way men are bashed on TV. If a woman, or other race was bashed, there would be huge backlashes. Mike Tyson was quoted once as saying "All I know is he's white, and he can't beat me". Let a white boxer say "All I know is he's black and he can't beat me" and you would see him as an instant racist. But not Iron Mike??

Back on my point: Why is it discrimination, unless it's against whites, males, or white males?”

“Well I don't agree with it either, treebeard. But I have a feeling it's just a culture clash that was poorly advertised as a race issue. Maybe the white kids wanted to dance to country music all night, and the black kids wanted to dance to hip hop all night, and they wouldn't compromise.

I remember in high school there were always fights between the hicks and the 'urban' blacks. It wasn't all about skin color, or the hicks would've picked on the 'rural' blacks, and the 'urban' blacks would have picked on someone like me - which they didn't.”

The problem is a few people talk and blow it out of porportion. Something like this can easily take place at someone's home, granted if it was big enough.”
