Now all ya gotta do is quit handing them out like candy to any dumbass that asks for one and require some training so we Buckeyes can carry in your state. >=(

GUNS FOR EVERYONE!!!
YEEEEEHAAAAAWWWWWW!!!!!
It's a parade kids! Run out there and catch Daddy one of those hot little Kimbers will ya?!
LOL!
Actually the reason you can't carry in IN is because you buckeyes won't let us carry there because we are not as strict on our qualifications. Here it is a snap to get one. As long as you have not been in the nut house, or are a convicted fellon, It's yours! 25 bucks end of story. The law reads "shall issue" here. I do see where they (OH Gov't) are coming from though. It does make sense.

I think its just irresponsible to issue them that way. There must be responsibility and I think that begins with showing that you have received a base minimum amount of training. Besides, its only smart to use the same standards as the other states so there is the most freedom of movement as possible. I think it may be changing though because they are supposed to be letting us Buckeyes carry there soon.

That is good to hear, hopefully OH will reciprocate. I don't argue your points, but I do also like that I am not hassled every couple years so I can exercise my rights also.

I honestly forgot I owned this thing. Found it tucked into the corner of my gun safe. I was always nervous shooting it knowing it could be over 100 yards old. With my bit of internet research I've found out it's a pre-war commercial model built between 1905 to 1912/1914.

I've got an M1 Garand, Enfield No.1 MK3, French MAS 36, and a Mosin Nagant M91. I mainly use the M1 for WWII reenacting. The others are just because I like collecting and restoring military firearms.

I'm on the far left.
And yes, we just killed lots of Germans. :)

Hey fennrisulfr, I'm the next to inherit a lovely old m-1, that my grandpa actually (he worked in a firearms factory) made during WWII. I haven't shot that thing since I was a kid, and I hate to think of all the rust it's collecting in the top shelf of my dad's closet.

You better get a hold of it soon and clean her up real good. The M1 is a lovely rifle and an important piece of history. www.surplusrifle.com if you need a disassembly guide.

Coolness.

My brother's the gun nut, definitely not my dad. For some reason I was allowed to target practice as a little kid, but not when a little older (girls don't do that kind of thing!) I tend to appreciate the aesthetics of things like that more than the use.

Wow !
Nice pistol DeoreDX. I'm not much into shooting although I sometimes carry, but think I'd want to shoot that one.

I qualify every year with a variety of implements of destruction but generally this is the only time I shoot.

Have some interest in the .17 cal (centerfire only) cartridge too. Skipped on the 50cal Barrets.

Nice Broomhandle dude! One gun I'd love to see is the .45 ACP Luger. There were only two made I think. Pre-WWII the German company that made the Luger submitted the .45 Luger to the government for manufacture but when the war broke out the deal was not made. It's one of the rarest guns on earth.

Apparently after doing a bit of research my Mauser C96 Broomhandle was one of 1000 very rare Brooms that were built under a contract for the Persian government. m Unfortunatly the biggest feature of the Persian pistols is a large Sun Lion stamped on the left side of the frame, mine was ground down though the tool marks of the original stamping is visible if you know there to look. All the other markings and evidence of being a Persian are all there.

That is a beautiful broomhandle Mauser. You need to clean up all your old guns with a BoreSnake. I wrote the patent on that cleaning device.

DeoreDX & Phil's Son
DeoreDX - that's still a very nice piece.

Phil's Son - I'm a little curious why you chose 9mm over the .223 round?

I only consider Bore Snakes as a temporary field solution and never a substitute for a full cleaning with a brush, bore cleaner, oil, etc. During and after shooting, I'll run the Bore snake through until I can get home and give them the full treatment. Then again, I only collect and shoot military surplus guns and often shoot with surplus corrosive ammo, so they need a full cleaning. I've just always wanted to keep them in tip top condition especially since I have several that are over 100 years old. Bore Snakes are certainly handy though.

Cause he's already got like two or three of them in .223. LOL!

fennrisulfr- the snake has the same brush as the kind that screws onto the rod, and you can put the cleaner and oil onto the thickened areas of the rope, and get the inside of the barrel quite a thorough cleaning a lot easier. They buy the brushes from the same people who make cleaning brushes for the kits.

You might want one snake with cleaner, and a different one with oil, but either way its faster, easier and better than the rod method. It can be a "full" cleaning, a heck of a lot easier. The inventor does a lot of shooting, and I spent a lot of time talking shooting with him, and he got it figured out pretty well.

I do admit they are very handy. I've got one in 8mm and 7.62 right now. Although, I'm always using period cleaning kits when reenacting so I guess I'm just so use to them.

There is no comparison between the surface area of the snake, and of a patch. One could say that each patch can be new and clean, but the snake can be washed in soap or solvent once in a while to get metal particles and contaminants out of it.

have you seen the price of 5.56/.223 lately! 9mm is about $.14/round and most ammo will be going up about 25% in the next few months. full auto gets expensive.

I went and spent an agonizing day gun shopping yesterday. I was torn between trading in the XD 40, paying some cash and getting the new XD 45 compact. Or I could get a cheaper pocket pistol. I ended up getting the Taurus PT-111 9mm. Sweet little pistol. Small, light and still holds 12+1.

and it does take skill as my shooting today showed. Man, I was stinking up the range! I have to get used to the new gun. It's a lot smaller than my 40 and the grip is smaller. Plus I drank a bit too much last night and my nerves weren't the best.

BrianSean has to get 5 shots into a quarter, 5 times, in order to finish his Rifle Merit Badge. Of course he only has to do it from 10 meters. He hasn't accomplished it the last two summers, he has everything else on the badge but this. Hopefully this skill is partly an age thing and he'll get it next summer. He'll be almost 14 this summer. I've got an airsoft gun for him to practice here at home.

Color me impressed. When it comes to a defense weapon though I don't care about impressing. I care about stopping power. If I wanna shoot a bunny rabbit I'll try the bow. If I wanna drop the bad guy with a gun I'll use a gun.

Defense to carry? or for home ?

For home a shotgun is best.
Much;
-easier to aim
-more stopping power
-less likely to penetrate the walls and kill your neighbor.

Well any long gun is going to be better than a pistol. I'd take an M4 style carbine over a shotgun. Low recoil, easy followups, large capacity, good stopping power, and even less concern of over penetration.

I don't have one now, but I'll go with a 45 cal. ACP. It is scary looking, and scary sounding, penetrates walls far less than a 9mm, but will stop whatever it hits. Fairly light in weight, compared to guns that hold lots of bullets.

Ammo/wall penetration tests

Impressive results for the 12 guage slug. The ultimate penetrator without a doubt. I need to field test my S&W 460 for penetration. Almost like holding a 45-70 in your hand.

My son just got his first deer rifle at an awsome price. We bought a mint condition (fired twice) Ruger M77 Stainless Steel, laminated stock in 30'06. It included a Nikon Buckmaster II scope for $500. He is really proud of it and paid for it with his own money. I can't wait to field test it with him. Hard to believe how good of a shot he is at only 12.

I still like the handgun for the home. It's lighter. Easier to handle because I can hold it and use it with one hand leaving my other hand free to use for dialing phones, flashlights, ect. Over penetration isn't a problem because the only entrance to my safe room (bedroom) is on an interior wall where a bullet's going to be stopped.

FYI - Glock 22
Catastrophic Failure of Glock Model 22

This bulletin is in reference to the catastrophic failure of a .40 Caliber Glock Model 22 when it was fired on the range by a firearms instructor. The weapon involved was issued to the Security Force at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The internal explosion caused the frame to break and the slide and barrel to separate from the weapon and travel down range.

Fortunately no persons were injured in this incident.

The investigation revealed that when going on duty the security personnel at Los Alamos were issued a magazine with one round in it. This was used to charge a single round into the chamber. This magazine was then removed and a fully loaded magazine was then inserted into the pistol. When the pistol was unloaded at the end of shift the fully loaded magazine was removed and the pistol unloaded. The single round removed from the chamber was then inserted in a magazine to be re-used to charge the chamber of a weapon being issued. This resulted in the same ammo being reloaded numerous times.

Repeated loading of the same round of ammo can cause the bullet to "setback" or seat itself deeper in the casing thus increasing the pressures from 31,700 - 33,600 psi to pressures high enough to cause the weapon to come apart. This repeated movement of the bullet can also cause it to loosen and when chambered leave the casing, travel down the barrel causing a barrel obstruction.

It is imperative that we inspect our ammo to make sure none of the bullets are "set back", and that we do not load and unload the same round every time we load and unload our weapons.

Imagine what might of happened if this weapon failed when the officer needed it in the field.
Thanks to Senior Investigator in Charge Ray Holman for providing the background information on this incident.

Started to post a swear filled reply.....deleted it...

Who does NOT Know this?...

(Well, to answer my own question, apparently the Los Alamos security force did not...DUH...)

I understand the rationale...many departments REQUIRE the full mag plus one in the chamber as a matter of POLICY because it then makes it easier to determine the number of rounds FIRED in any encounter....(If some officers leave two rounds out of a mag to reduce spring tension loss in the mag, and others do not, it leaves room to fudge on the answer to: "How many rounds did you fire?")

(IA does NOT like that, hence a policy that is rigidly enforced, with disciplinary action for deviating from policy).

I said that to say this:

When it became policy to top off the mags, proper reload of the weapon/mags was taught (IS taught)... at least in all the places I've trained.
