I only have one gun; however I do have a wide assortment of weapons. These weapons range from a Glock 19 to a Mossberg 12 gauge to a .308 Winchester. And I still don't have enough!

.38 taurus, .40cal S&W, mossberg 20gauge, a couple of .22s....
The really sad thing is that my Smith is more concealable than my .38. I tried the Glock a couple of times, just never liked the feel of it.

I'm in the middle of working over 200 hours of overtime with a huge project at work. After that I'm buying myself a toy. Several guys that I work with are considering buying the S&W 500. With 2600 ft/lbs of energy, S&W claims the .50 Mag will drop anything walking. Three times the stopping power of a .44 magnum. I want to buy a large frame revolver for self protection on an Alaska trip this year. I don't think I'm going with the model 500 maybe the 460 which will fire the .454, .45 and .460 mag. Both of these would make execelent big game hunting handguns. At a minimum I'll getting a large frame .44 mag., but the trajectory of a .44 mag makes it a lesser choice as a big game hunting handgun.

Nigal, that is one heckuva video.

Bateaux, I bet the 500 is a mutha to shoot. I dont doubt that it'll put anything that walks down, including the shooter LOL. My boss has a really nice Dan Wesson .44 with a compensated 10 in barrel. He deer hunts with and takes whitetail annually from 75yds (so he says). Nice pistol but far too heavy.Enjoy the OT if you can and have fun shopping!

I got my glock sunday, the fella threw in the molded pistol holster and double mag holster for free.

Well I did it. I went out and bought myself a S&W 460V. The 460V is a large frame, 5 shot, 5" barrel revolver with enough power to kill anything that walks. It is chambered for .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull and .460 S&W magnum. The 200 to 400 grain .460 mag. bullet leaves the muzzel at up to 2100 fps. Had I gone with the 8" barrel the same bullet achieves 2400 fps. Being chamberd to also fire .45 LC allows one to actually practice a bit cheaper and with less pain and noise. That versatility is why I chose the 460 over the 500. It is heavy weighing in at 62.5 oz. dry. I only plan to carry it when contact with dangerous game is expected. And don't worry I don't plan on carrying it or any other firearm on a TT trip unless the trip is private, the location dictates the need for firearms and the matter has been discussed. I'm going test fire the weapon today and will give a trip report this afternoon.

Ohhhh....I have an Complex now....
Yesterday I bought the smallest gun I've ever owned, a neat little hideout gun, the Kel Tec P32, 32ACP, 2 extra mags (One is the ten Round Extended Grip).

All my other handguns were just to big to hide when wearing Shorts and a "T-shirt"....

There you have it TT'ers one extreme to the other......

I went to Gander Mountain the other day and picked up a Springfield Armory XD .40. They were priced between $469 and $495 but the local shop was selling them for $433 so they matched it plus I got another 5% off for opening a GM card so I walked out paying only $413. Yeeehaw! I’m starting my ccw classes next week hopefully.

Those Kel Tecs have a good rep. Doesn't DDX have one? How does it fit big hands? I have huge dickbeaters so small guns aren't for me. After you hammer your left thumb with a small auto you get a little gun shy. LOL! I was going to get the DX in the 3" sub compact because the extended mag made it the same size in the grip as a full size.

Makes me wish I still had the $$$ to buy the Ruger 454 casull I was going to get. :-(

Nigal, why .40 caliber? I've never really understood its purpose. If I wanted something stronger than 9mm I'd get 45acp. I like the recoil of the 45 much better than the snappiness of the .40. And doesn't .40 cost as much as .45? Been awhile since I've priced it.

ETA - I like the XD line - very nice.

It’s a nice compromise. I have never even shot a 45 so I can’t really compare. The 45 was about $100 more and I was on a budget. I got a 100 rd box of Winchester FMJ plinking rounds for $19 and I bought a box of the Federal Hi Shocks for defense for about $12. I have found 40s pretty cheap at gun shows also. I did a quick google and it looks like the 40 might be cheaper.

I would like to lighten the trigger pull on the thing but I do not know what legal ramifications that might have if I’m carrying it?

So it's cheaper - that makes sense I guess. Of course, it eventually comes down to personal preference anyway.

I don't know about the legal ramifications of a trigger job - perhaps that's a question to ask when you take your CCW class.

Mutt, Nigal, I shoot a .40S&W (sadly I still prefer my old 5 shot .38spec revolver since i cna put 5 out of 5 in the 10 ring at 50 feet) and I have shot .45 acp. 44mag and 9mm. The .40 is a pretty good round with acceptable penetration. The main reason I had to get it is that the surrounding counties use either 9mm or .40 cal.

As for round selection, I think one of my instructors said it best. If you have the biggest gun in the world and cannot hit the target, but I have a .22 and can knock the eye out of a gnat every time....I eventually will win.

Want some fun???Try a .458 (elephant gun) got to fire it three times at the range....DARN NEAR TOOK MY SHOULDER OFF>

Hey SuperTroll mouseguns have their purpose, as does the 460.

Hey DNB I like that S&W XD I held one yesterday while waiting for my clearance. May give Glock a run for their money.

Mutt the .480 Ruger and .454 Ruger were in my consideration as well as the 45 LC Vaquero.

My next gun may be a lever action rifle. I like the a stainless Marlin with laminated stock. What caliber I'm not sure. Right now a .460 S&W would really excite me, but it doesn't exist. I should be able to find one in .45 LC.

My other desire is for maybe a Ruger M77 stainless and laminate chambered in .300 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum). When my kids are grown and I don't work so much I'd like to start elk hunting and I don't own a magnum rifle yet. I may buy one before this hunting season.

That's exactly right - and why I stick with 9mm. Cheap practice ammo, and I'm accurate with it for having practiced so much. I have no problem trusting the lethality of 147 grain Federal Hydrashocks.

eta - having said that, I've had an itch lately for a 1911 style .45!

Nig, I have heard that most handgun fights are within arms reach (point blank more or less).

Mutt, I had a .45 for a while, and shot the 45 1911 in my early years. The dang thing is often so loose that you are lucky to hit the broad side of a bulls tushie at 25 feet. If you can get a GOLD CUP special that has a pretty good feel to it.

What we need to do is hook up somewhere for a shooting and comparing weekend. When the Scout Ranch gets certified down here...I will give you a call. The Ranger is a friend of mine and as long as he can come play he is cool with it. (LOL)

S&W 460V Magnum Trip Report
Ok I'm back. I warmed up with the Ruger .22-45 then on the S&W Model 66 .357, then on to the S&W 460V with .45LC and finally the .454 Casull. I was unable to purchase .460 S&W Mag. rounds so that has to wait.

I'm out of practice but still did pretty well. I used the Chapman stance. Standing with shooting arm locked and fully extended.

At 25 feet with the .22 I had a 30% chance of a head shot on a squirrel or an 70% chance on a rabbit. Only 2 rounds out of ten fell outside of the 5 ring of the target. Would like a better group. KOOL!!!!

At 25 feet with the .357 great looking 3 shot 1 in. group 7, 5 and 4 ring. OH! yeah!

At 25 feet with the 460V .45 LC, nice 3 shot 1 inch group 8, 7 and 4 ring. Feels good!!

At 25 feet with the 460V 3 shots .454, Casull, 4 ring high, 2 in. high and 2 in. high. Not badly grouped but high. Feels powerful!!

My shooting skills cannot come close the capability of the 460V. I actually scored much better at 25 yards. Where the target mass is three times as large. Using the 460V with .45 LC I fired a 3 shot 1 1/2 in. group 7,6 and 6 ring.

It seems thusfar that the .45 Long Colt 250 GR is the best round for this weapon to practice fire. The recoil felt is compatable with the .357 158 grain S&W. The sharp shove of the .454 Casull 250 Gr bullet is not something I would like to endure all day but one should be able to fire off 25 rounds without pain. The muzzel flash in daylight is not noticeable to the shooter in daylight. I bet the magna ports throw flames at night. As soon as I can find some ammo, I'm gonna try out the big .460 Mag. in 250 and 400 Grain bullets. The .454 and .460 bullets are too expensive to shoot for practice purposes. I would say on a trip to the range I would bring fifty .45LC, six .454 Casull and six .460 mags.

To launch those 60 rounds the cost would be:

50 .45 LC 20 bucks
6 .454 Casull 10 bucks
6 .460 Mag 10+ bucks

Forty bucks and your hands probably have had enough. I do my plinking with a .22 LR so at 2 cents a shot I can get my thrills. Reloading should definitly be in the plan of anyone that shoots the 460 on a regular basis.

The handling of the weapon is superb. I have large hands and the soft rubber grips of the 460 fit me just right. The balance of the 5" model is pretty darn good. The 8 inch I held in the store was very much weight forward to me. It would be the most accurate in the right hands, but for me the balance of the 5" should make me more accurate. The trigger pull is comfortable fired double and single action. The sight picture is great. I can't find a thing mechanically that I would change.

Oh yeah, it smells great now. Smells like, victory!

Hmmmm, I'm not exactly sure what a chapman stance is but it sounds like this. I slappy you face with my glove and we go play dueling pistols. Arm straight out with the other behind your back. Take aim, fire. When I try this I wobble around too much. I find I am more accurate if I bend my pistol arm and support the butt of the pistol with the palm of my other hand. I do this even with my Ruger .22LR. I would really like to get into target shooting.

Sounds like a blast! Ditto on your stance. I call that the "bullseye" stance, and I'm not very good with it. I shoot much better with a traditional two handed stance.

Chapman Stance
Yep Nigal that is the Chapman stance that I used. The shooting arm is extended fully and locked. The support hand wraps around the shooting hand and pulls lightly back on the shooting hand. The elbow of the shooting arm is slightly bent, and the shooting arm is pulled in front of the chest at full length. With a magnum round I think it is a strong hold because the shooting arm is locked. The arm is like the stock of a rifle.

I suppose you could use the Weaver where both arms are bent. The shooting arm is bent and higer than the elbow of the support arm. The support arm is bent and lower than the elbow of the shooting arm. I'm sure skilled shooters could control any caliber with any stance, but I like the weapon farther away from my face when shooting magnums. Loosing a front tooth is something I've already experianced during a basketball game.

I would love to see someone shoot a magnum gangbanger style with one arm extended out and weapon turned in a horizontial plane. It would probably whip around and hit him in the side of the head.
