Gotta agree, the USP Tactical is one of my favorites. I have an AAC EVOLUTION-45 suppressor for mine. But I'm more of a Sig fan. I guess it has to do with familiarity and comfort level.

I’ve got an older P226, but I’ve mostly been practicing with my Sig P229 Crimson Trace. I find the laser sight useful. After all, most self-defense occurs within a 6-ft. radius. And if you’re shooting someone at 25yds, it’s awfully hard to defend in court. The Sig fits nicely into my Galco Royal Guard for CCW. I’ve got the draw down to where I’m reasonably comfortable with my speed and accuracy.

I’m also thinking about a Springfield XD. I've read a bunch, but what are your personal thoughts on GAP vs. ACP?”

“Damn son you got some nice guns there. I’d love to get a Galco inside the waistband holster eventually but I have a $13 Uncle Mikes right now. I think any one of these choices would be a good one. I’d love a USP but if I get a 45 I want a single stack compact for carriability. My buddy has a Springfield compact custom he let me shoot and except for the increased pressure the recoil was no more than my XD 40. Very sweet.

I really like the XD and I got pretty efficient with it. I haven’t shot the gap yet but I personally want the 45 simply for the variety of ammo and my buddy has a reloader that I can use to make some good hot loads.

That is what I have heard about the GAP too, really the only difference is it is able to fit in a smaller grip frame. So if you have small hands it makes sense, but not much purpose otherwise.

I think the USP has got the competition beat from the get go here, but Uncle Sam probably isn't gonna bet too happy about the price. Next I would guess will be the XD, then the glock, or maybe the new Smith M&P.
True the Para's are knock off 1911's but the LDA's are a long way from John M. Brownings trigger set up.

Some of the requirements are that the gun can be set up w or w/o a manual external safety, and must be supressor ready. Also they must have a capacity of at least 10, and preferably 12 or more. It also must not be a developmental gun. It has to be something already in production. That kills you standard 1911. It also puts the USP right up front and center. IMHO.”

Speaking for the XD their 45 is so close to the same size as the rest of their XDs that unless you hold it up right next to one you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference size wise. Amazingly the 45 actually hold two more rounds than the 40. WTF? I wonder if the safety on the XD will rule it out as it has no external manual safety. Same for the Glock but the XD has double safeties because it has the Browning grip safety of the 1911 as well as the Glock trigger safety. I know the Glock is a big favorite among soldiers who can carry their own issued pistol.”

“Nigal, I’ll bet that XD 40 is sweet. I thought about the XD 40. The only thing is, my regular carry pistol (P229) is a 9 (cheaper practice ammo). I haven’t experimented with any of the frangibles, but I’ve shot a lot of different JHP. The Speer Gold Dot and Hornady Tap have reasonable stopping power.

Because of my familiarity with Sigs, I’m thinking about getting the P229-40 Crimson Trace. That would become my sidearm. I’m telling you, that Crimson Trace is great for close range and low light.

I’m thinking about the Springfield in 45. I don’t currently use GAP. My USP uses ACP and it doesn’t beat me to death. I find the ACP very controllable for rapid fire. I always ask about the experience of others.

That Galco is sweet. I also have a custom ITW from a guy out of Canada (I don’t remember his name offhand). It’s a good one, but that Galco is really nice for production leather. It has good stability, a smooth draw, and it’s very comfortable.

Has anyone else ever checked out the Steyr M-A1? It’s comfortable, accurate, and controllable. It’s on my wish list.”

I wonder if that's because they're shooting ball. From everything I've read, modern JHP 9mm is a suitable stopper. Of course, handguns in general suck at stopping, and shot placement is key, even with the larger calibers.

I don't believe that's the magazine, meangreen; at least not that I remember. You’re absolutely right about those other observations. It nestles nicely in my web, the grip isn’t quite as ergonomic as my Sig (what is?) but it’s close, and it positions your wrist very closely to the barrel axis.

Supposedly, it’s highly rated for reliability and accuracy.

If you reload your own, you may want to see if a gun smith can "de-beef" the ejector a little. Mine kicks em out so hard the casings actually spin around and hit the side of the reciever, and folds in about 1/3 of the neck of the casing. Look on the right side if your reciever to see if it has a bunch of little sliver moon shaped marks. This is caused from the spent cases doing a 180 as soon as they come out. You will know what I mean after you shoot it a little, that is if yours does it. Mine is terrible about it. Probably 1 in 3 or 4 shots it ruins the brass.”

“They have an incredibly simple trigger assy. Very few parts. So that should be easy to to install yourself.
The only mods I ever made on mine were a synthetic stock, and flash supressor. I wanted to hunt coyotes at night w. it originally.I don't have the time or places to go anymore though.
Another tip: If you buy aftermarket mags for it stay away from the ones from places like sportsmans guide. (USA Brand I think.) They will jam about every other round. Total CRAP! If anyone here has a brand they are happy with please let me know about that too.”

I still want a Glock 9mm. Don't own one yet, but have shot then several times.
It's one of the few handguns I can shoot well and hit where I'm aiming.

One quirk with a Glock a friend of mine had, was it would eject the shell right over my head. One time a hot shell dropped right into my collar and burned the crap out of my neck. LOL”

That link you posted here specifically said NOT to used Wolf ammo, or other russian import junk because the primers are too hard, and will break you firing pin. You could go Mil surplus if you don't mind spending some extra time cleaning afterwords as long as it is just for practice, and plinking. The bullets are too light (55gr)for hunting, and FMJ's of that caliber won't do enough damage to drop a deer. That said, I have used them in my own mini for punchin paper, and they are ok.”

The best surplus ammo to use is South African mil surplus. It is the second best military ammo you can get. They bought all their machinery from Israel who makes the best ammo. It's high quality and clean.”
