MikeP depending on local laws it may be legal. In michigan you can sell long guns to any adult (non-felon of course and those prohibited) without any police involvement. With handguns the purchaser must have a purchase permit and you keep a copy for your records. Call your local police.

You'd think it would be a requirement to live in AL.

My dad has offered me his revolver many times. I just don't feel comfortable with a revolver and little kids. I grew up around rifles and frankly don't have the experience or comfort level of revolvers or pistols. Nothing against them, just not my cup of tea.

Hey Spam

ummmm, lessee, there's a 12 ga semi, a 12 pump, a 20 ga pump (with a slug barrel and an IC barrel) as well as a 30.06 and an old 22. All of these are 40 plus years old, but they're in relatively good shape, kept reasonably clean. Once upon a time they were seasonally used for hunting, but that's been a long long time.

birch - yeah, i thought about calling the local cops and asking about it, probably the right answer.

Not sure about CO laws there, but back here in TN Face to Face transactions are perfectly legal. If you have to buy one from out of state though it has to go through a federally licensed dealer (FFL) for a nominal charge of course plus background check. So you would probably have to find a dealer there to ship to a dealer in the receiving State to make it all legal.

Good for you Dayhiker. The NRA offers a lot of classes that will make you as safe as possible and hone your shooting skills. Always remember rule #1: If the gun is not in your control then it should be locked up where no one can control it.

MikeP,
To get an idea of value check for similar guns on sale at one of the online gun auctions.
There are a bunch of sites.
Unless you subscribe you probably cannot see closed auctions so look for listings that have several bids.

The 20 ga. pump would be a M37. John Moses Browning designed and first produced by Remington. When Remington dis-continued production, Lou Smith (cousin with Smith & Wesson, Smith Corona, et c.) picked it up for Ithaca. The current Browning pump is an Ithaca clone made off-shore, but of extremely high quality.

The M37 is - was, actually - known as the 'Featherlight' and is a sweet upland gun - particularly if it has a ventilated rib.

Hope this helps,

Doug

Get a safe
And have it bolted into the foundation of your house. Get one as highly rated as you can afford for security and fire resistant.

After you do that, get a smaller, lighter safe for your bedroom - preferably a big one if you plan on keeping a shotgun and handgun one as well if you go that route.

Then train yourself in the dark to open the safe and get your gun. Do it over and over and over.

Have the hand gun safe be the type where it is your fingers that open it, rather than a key lock.

So very important to have safes - they protect you, your family and still leave your firearms accessible if needed.

I would leave the shorter barrel on, keep it either on the top shelf of the closet or on a rack on the space above the closet door (inside the closet). However, I would load it with 00 buckshot.

IMHO, there is no better close quarter gun than a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot. Additionally, there is absolutely no better deterrent than hearing one being cycled up.

This is the one I wound up getting. It should be here today:

birch, that was my second choice. I decided it just looked too gaudy. Cool video though.

I was leaning towards about #4 shot. I'm concerned about the buckshot going through multiple walls. I'm going to leave the 18" on it and store it pretty much like chili described.

I will likely get a safe around Christmas. I have a full unfinished basement, so bolting to the foundation isn't an option. I do have the room to put a small one in my closet, which is what I'll probably do.

PS, sarbar, what did you mean by find a lock you can do with your hands and not a key? Are you talking about a combination lock? The key thing has bothered me. I can see needing to get in, in a big freakin hurry, and not being able to find the key.

The key thing doesn't bother me, but then again all of my guns are for hunting and are the best for home protection. The .30 30 Savage 170 does have that classic pump sound.

Yes, it's a mossberg.

The other apsect of the key, is I can't find my car keys half the time. I can just see losing a safe key. I actually picture the safe more for the rifles I bring back this weekend and leave the shotgun in the top of my closet. I have two rows of wire rack shelving. The top rack is about 7' off the floor. Kids can't climb the shelving. My 8 y.o. couldn't even get to it with a chair. THe problem, is that it's too tall for my wife to get to it from a stool in the event she needed it.

I'd never trust a loaded weapon with kids outside of a safe. No matter what a parent thinks kids are smarter and more devious.
Gun safety with kids is SO important. One of the best ways to take the allure away is to have the kids help clean them. Then they see it is a tool. Also tell them anytime they want to see a gun to ask you.

As for safes that open with fingers, there are safes where you use 4 fingers to press a combo. No numbers needed - it is designed to fit your palm. Hit the fingers right and the door drops open. Big safes as well, get the number keypad. Much easier than tumblers.

Also, for safes in humid areas, get a dehumidifier for it - they plug in and are left on the bottom of the safe.

Unless a gun or rifle can be safely stored it SHOULD not be loaded or in a house!!!! At least have a lock on the trigger!!

Anyone use those fingerprint safes? Are they worth the premium?

I spent 4 years of my life never more than 10 meters from a loaded weapon.

While I did everything possible to ensure that my kids (then 8 and 4) could not access these weapons, I was a strong proponent of the then NRA campaign of "This is a gun, it is real, don't touch it, tell and adult".

I also took them to the range and let them watch me shoot where they understood the damage it would cause.

Still, you can never be too safe.

This guy knows about Obama and his stance on the 2nd amendment.

Fellow Sportsman,
Hello, my name is Rich Pearson and I have been active in the firearm rights movement for over 40 years. For
the past 15 years, I have served in the Illinois state capitol as the chief lobbyist for the Illinois State Rifle
Association.
I lobbied Barack Obama extensively while he was an Illinois State Senator. As a result of that experience, I
know Obama’s attitudes toward guns and gun owners better than anyone. The truth be told, in all my years in
the Capitol I have never met a legislator who harbors more contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner than
Barack Obama.
Although Obama claims to be an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, his voting record in the Illinois Senate paints
a very different picture. While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle,
shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes
of gun owners and forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding
firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also
voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month.
Without a doubt, Barack Obama has proven himself to be an enemy of the law abiding firearm owner. At the
same time, Obama has proven himself to be a friend to the hardened criminal. While a state senator, Obama
voted 4 times against legislation that would allow a homeowner to use a firearm in defense of home and family.
Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a “friend” of the law-abiding gun owner?
And speaking of friends, you can always tell a person by the company they keep. Obama counts among his
friends the Rev. Michael Pfleger - a renegade Chicago priest who has openly called for the murder of gun shop
owners and pro-gun legislators. Then there is his buddy Richard Daley, the mayor of Chicago who has declared
that if it were up to him, nobody would be allowed to own a gun. And let’s not forget Obama’s pal George
Soros - the guy who has pumped millions of dollars into the UN’s international effort to disarm law-abiding
citizens.
Obama has shown that he is more than willing to use other people’s money to fund his campaign to take your
guns away from you. While a board member of the leftist Joyce Foundation, Barack Obama wrote checks for
tens of millions of dollars to extremist gun control organizations such as the Illinois Council Against Handgun
Violence and the Violence Policy Center.
Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a “friend” of the law-abiding gun owner?
By now, I’m sure that many of you have received mailings from an organization called “American Hunters
and Shooters Association(AHSA)” talking about what a swell fellow Obama is and how he honors the 2nd
Amendment and how you will never have to worry about Obama coming to take your guns. Let me make it
perfectly clear - everything the AHSA says about Obama is pure hogwash. The AHSA is headed by a group
of left-wing elitists who subscribe to the British view of hunting and shooting. That is, a state of affairs where
hunting and shooting are reserved for the wealthy upper-crust who can afford guided hunts on exclusive private
reserves. The AHSA is not your friend, never will be.
In closing, I’d like to remind you that I’m a guy who has actually gone nose to nose with Obama on gun rights
issues. The Obama I know cannot even begin to identify with this nation’s outdoor traditions. The Obama I
know sees you, the law abiding gun owner, as nothing but a low-class lummox who is easily swayed by the
flash of a smile and a ration of rosy rhetoric. The Obama I know is a stony-faced liar who has honed his skill at
getting what he wants - so long as people are willing to give it to him.
That’s the Barack Obama I know.
Sincerely,
(original signed)
Richard A. Pearson
