This session will consider strategies for working to make our society more sustainable. Because we believe that everyone interested in these issues has valuable ideas to contribute, we are following a new format. Instead of a lecture followed by questions and answers, a number of invited speakers will speak for a few minutes each, explaining their roles in furthering sustainability and how they assess their progress. Their remarks are intended to serve as a springboard for a broader discussion; they will get you thinking about your own experiences, so you can share them and we all can learn together from each other.

In developing this session, we have envisioned a number of roles individuals can take in working for sustainability. Our speakers play some of these roles; where do you fit in?

- Voluntarily change individual or corporate behavior; drive less, eat low on the food chain, consume as little as possible, buy green.
- Educate others about the importance of sustainability, in order to change their behavior.
- Advocate for public policy that would further sustainability, e.g. high gas taxes, good mass transit, better schools, peaceful solutions to international conflict.
- Implement policies that further sustainability as an elected official or civil servant.
- Create a business that sells "green" goods or services.
- Identify more sustainable technologies, through research and development.
- Sue private companies or government agencies to ensure compliance with or enforcement of laws requiring equal treatment, environmental protection, or other sustainable practices.
- Monitor progress of the society and keep people informed about how we are doing, as a spur to greater action.
- Give money so others can do these things.

Seating is limited, so please register for this event by sending an email to EnviroSciences@nyas.org. There is no charge for this event.
