I met Sirpete at Newfound Gap in the Smokys last Sunday to complete the northern half of of the AT. (We did the Southern half in the Fall).
We left my truck there and his wife droped us off at I-40 where the trail crosses under.

The first day was all uphill and pretty hot. It was about 8 miles to Cosby Knob shelter where we stayed. By dark the shelter was full. Several thru-hikers were there too.

Monday morning it started raining about 6:00 AM. We left the shelter about 7:00 and headed south toward Pecke Corner Shelter. On the way we stopped and ate lunch at Tricorner shelter. It was raining so hard that several thru-hikers were still in their sleeping bags and had no intention on going out in the rain.
By 1:30 we were at the turnoff for Pecks Shelter. It was too early to stop so we headed on.
The last hill was starting to kick our ass and I thought about stopping at Icewater shelter but we were only 2.9 from the truck so we pushed on. About 5:30 PM we were at Newfound Gap.
After 23.3 miles in the rain in one day, we were beat. We wish we would have had better views but most all day we were pounded with rain, High winds, and thick fog.

The Pizza down in Cherokee was AWESOME!!!!!!

It's pretty cool. I like not having to go to Wal-Mart after every trip.

I put so other pictures from it in my Rock & Roll album too on Webshots. It's the ones around the bottom. Most of the pics in the album are old.

Not just a little rain either. It rained 6" in 24 hrs that day. we were walking in a creek of water, 3ft wide and in some spots 1ft deep. most of the time it was a bit more mellow but the wind wasn't. we must have had 50mph winds up on the top. I was almost blown over at one point. I would have loved to stay that night but I had eneough of that rain crap. I'm looking forward to getting home and doing that hike in the Catskills. Great to see you made it home alright WD and we can start thinking about the next section. We might want to make it a little further than hot springs though, thats only thirty something miles, If we are going to start hiking 20+ miles per day we are going to need longer trips!

Walkindude has that Kid Rock "bad boy" look goin on! Makes my heart do flips. He'd better watch out next time he gets this close to the Smokies. Its all good. I'll give him a 10 second headstart.

The smokys are great even in the rain. I took a nice rest break by that rock the wet walkindude is standing by last fall. The views were great that day!

Wow, I've told a lot of short jokes about Pete, but I've never called him a dwarf. ;o)

Great pics WD! It's always something with you 2. If it ain't bears or bees, it's a monsoon. Sounds like fun!

See ya next week in the 'Skills, Pete. I hope the weather is a tad better.

We were beyond water logged. Most of my trips this season have been that way. Oh well, 2 more trips and my gear goes into hibernation for the season.

We had a few nice views the first day but the second day was pretty crappy so most all we saw was fog. Every now and then we would get a limited view.
I may go back up there again and do some of that section just to see what we missed.

We could bearly see it through the fog. If I went back again, I'd want to go to either Pecks Shelter or Tricorner Shelter and check out that much of it again. I bet there is a nice view from Icewater shelter.

Hey man, Hiney patting on the trail can be fun! I know because for Mothers Day.... my boyfriend aka husband tried it out and THEN chased me down Rich Mtn. Trail all the way to the parking lot. Woo hoo! He is fun. I hope he never changes.

I can admire hunky guys even though I'm married. Men check out cute chicks all da time. I'm old enough to qualify for the dirty old woman bracket now.

Pete, Walkindude.... I am just dreadful I know. A wicked sinner. Skullcap, Buddhabear and the resta them... Don't be hatin! Dey my boyz!

WD and Pete
Yo from da West! Hate that the views were fawgy. It's pretty incredible how different the northern half is from the southern half of the GSMNP. WD your close enough that I'd suggest ya to do it again sometime. At the very least you should do the Davenport Gap to Alum Bluff Cave parking lot loop. It's an easy hitch back up to Dav gap even if you do it solo. First night at Icewater, second one at LeConte Shelter near the lodge would make a killer weekend.

Rock on fellas!!!
