Maybe its just me but I’m just a little suspicious of anyone who views education expenditures as “pouring billions of taxpayer dollars down the public school rathole”. Moon is hostile to democracy and an educated population is critical to a functioning democracy.

The question is whether the money is well-spent, or are we raising a generation of idiots? On the radio this morning there was a piece to the effect that a poll determined that only 20 percent of New Jersey voters knows which parties are in control of the General Assembly and only 70 percent know that Gov. McGreevey is a Democrat. I don't think the NEA wants to point to those numbers as an accomplishment.

"Dewd"... Moon is a crackpot cult leader and YOU are a waste of time. You have no idea who Moon is, but you'll defend him because he spews your preferred flavor of political slime.

I guess if you were a Democrat you'd be the type that thinks anything negative said about Jesse Jackson is racist.

Dumbass.

Teachers at my school were polled and a large majority said that they would like to belong to the local county union but NOT to the NEA. I have a feeling that it's that way elsewhere. It can't be done though.

Some local unions are worthless (D.C.) and loot the teachers and parents, but most are not.

How come nobody will blame the parents/students for the conditions of those schools? Ya think that they might have a little something to do with it?

so you are happy with the quality of the populations education? that's the only point of the post. the school system is a mess and it's the NEA's fault. it's not a source, it's an opinion and i say it's right on the money.

"Dr. Martin Rosenberg, my high school English teacher, having
had it with my classroom antics whilst he drilled us in English
grammar, told me, 'Williams, teaching you this material is like
casting pearls before the swine.' That was in 1952 before everyone
became concerned about self-esteem, but it was precisely the
kind of dressing down that I needed to challenge me and turn
my high school academic performance around. Two years later,
it was Dr. Rosenberg who proudly coached me with my salutatorian
address for our graduation ceremony. I thank God that I received
my education before educators and psycho-babblers became concerned
about self-esteem; I'm also thankful for having received it before
it became fashionable for white people to like black people. It
meant my grades were honest." --Walter Williams

"private schools can do a better job for less."
Check how much it would cost to send your kid to private school. Way more than the public schools get and WAY more than any voucher that I've heard proposed.
The figure I've heard for vouchers is $2000 per year. While the private high schools I know about are $4000 per month. Can you afford to make up that difference? Let's say you can. You get the last vacancy in the private school. Then I come along because I want a good education for my kid too. Will my $5000 a month kick your kid out? $6000? $7000? If you can afford that your kid is already in private school. Or do you just want to subsidize the schools for the rich?

No Competition
A voucher system would drain money from public schools and increase the concentration of problem kids whose parents can't or won't pay attention to their education, thereby weakening those schools further.

Private schools are not inherently better. I hear from folks that if a kid is a problem at a private school that the school can just get rid of them. Most of the time this is false. Those schools need that tuition money and they tolerate a lot of crap ..... money talks.

Again....how about addressing those problem kids and their parents?

They need to do away with these teachers unions. Make some cuts from the salaries these people are making. Nice to have a ten year to give me permission to slack off. Blah Blah Blah. If you run it like a business you will see results. Their is a reasons some of these school have went to crap. Need to direct some of these cuts from their salaries and apply them to the school. That whole ten year thing is bogus!

Vouchers? I'm for it!

A few things, though...
How do we keep polarization of schools from happening: i.e. inner city schools becoming even more run-down due to anyone has the means sending thier kid with their voucher to the better suburban schools?
How do we propose handling the vouchers in the case of home-schooling?
How will school transportation be affected?
How will the amount of the vouchers be determined initially?
What would be the method for censuring schools with unnacceptable performance?
How does the voucher get paid? Is it taxable?
Who writes the standardized tests? Federal or state governments?

I believe a voucher system could work, but I'm really interested to see how it might play out.

I friggin' hate vouchers, I pay taxes, I don't have kids. You have choice in education: public, private, or home schooling. If you don't wanna pay for your kids education they get public school or you don't have kids. It's called PERSONAL RESPONSIBIBLITY. As for the decline in public schools you can blame teachers/teachers unions/educational beauracracy all day long, but the truth is there are too many parents that chose to work too hard and ignore the responsibility they have to raise their children. Parent's aren't going to back-to-school nights like they used to. Parent's aren't taking their children to church or enrolling them in Scouting and sports or spending time with them like they used to.

please don't keep throwing more of my income tax at the fact that there are so many horrible parent's out there

Behinds
No politician is willing to stand up and tell parents that for the most part they suck. They just keep on coddling them ( "No Child Left Behind")and coming up with another layer of repetitive, overlapping testing to judge the "outcomes". Gag!!! If your child doesn't work hard enough that ought to be left behind, or have their behind..... Sorry! Is it summer yet?
