Dang - all these layoffs hither and yon, and I elect to resign from my great job. Well, it's maybe not a "great" job, but it's pretty nice... "okay", at least. Alright, it's gotten pretty stale - time to shag-out.

But I can't help but to be kinda curious about what lies around the bend.

"bend"?
Bend!
Bend, Freakin-Oregon!

Whoo-hoo! That would be kewl!

*gojo skurrys about packing this and that, including the road atlas*

Yeah, my brother used to work for Nortel (and we all know what happened to that co.)...he finally got chopped during their 6th major layoffs.

Everytime the co. announced a major layoff, and co-workers were called into "The Office"...everyone knew their time was up.

ROFLMAO..get real. Do you realize how much tax relief these companies get already. They pay very little in property, local or state taxes. Those deals are worked out before they ever move to a state/town.

ewker, that may be so but i have been in business before and taxes SUCK!

anybody in here own their own business? if so, do you feel like you get all kinds of cushy tax cuts and back room deals? are you undertaxed?

if clintonomics are so great, and the cornerstone of his philosophy was to raise taxes, how come dem'

strat, when you say give these companies a break and they won't lay off, what size companies are you talking. There is a big difference between Dell and your business. Dell will get the deal while you won't but who has more people working for them you or Dell.
It isn't the small companies that are laying off 100's of people it is the large companies who overpay their CEO's, CFO's, etc. To pay a CEO 10 million dollars a yr not including bonuses while they lay off their employees isn't right. If the guy who makes 10 million is so good let him go down to the mfg floor and work. If the CEO wants his company to prosper let him take a paycut to say 5 million a yr. That is money he can put back into his company.

There is a solution... start updating your resume, why hang with a failing company? Life is too short to spend it worrying over employment.

or just start cleaning a gun at your desk every day during lunch...

Corporate Greed
I work for a old Telephone company (Rochester Telephone) that was a nice 100 year place. It became the first to De-regulate and become Frontier in 1995, then it was bought by Global Crossing. I'm sure you guys haveheard of them ! They are the Enron of Telecommunications. Luckily I'm in the Union and the local side of the house, so the PSC still has expectations for service comittments. So just before Gloabl's sh-t hit the fan, they sold us to Citizens Communication which hates Unions. So now the talk is our entire Union will be SQUASHED come next April. I can feel for you Mapleleaf, we have been thru the grinder a bunch of times too. They have had some layoffs even with the Union. Mapleleaf All I can tell you is to hang tough, and if it happens it may be a Good Omen and you may end up somewhere better and happier. I know I hate working for corporate america and their Greedy F@@king CEO and board members. I have lost tons in 401k and they walk out with 50 mil in their pockets. I woked in payroll for awhile and the a-hole CEO got a 80k and a Rolex gift one year!
GREED is one of the 7 deadly sins.
They will have to answer to their maker someday. Mapleleaf, best of luck ..lots of Fruit Farms to work on around here! can you drive a tractor? Good luck.
PS...I have a friend that works for Xerox and he sez he has seen entire Mfg lines loaded up on tractor trailer and sent to Mexico!!!

Let's all open a chain of Chik-Fil-A franchises. We'll form a corporation and each own the profits from one store. A high demand product with decent overhead and good profits, plus Sundays automatically off! Then WE will control the hiring/firing!! 15% discount to people associated with backpacking. In fact, we'll buy land next to existing outfitters.

Ewker,
I would not bet a Red cent on the moral or ethics of any corp nowadays......A tax break ? who knows? It could just mean more $$$ in their pockets...
It is really sad that foundation of our country is is going deep six. We need a rebellion! We dont Make anything anymore, we are a Service country and not a Manufacturer, Few kids have any trade knowledge, they can flip a burger, or run a cash register but they can't cut a board, or weld steel...etc... We send all our stuff to China, hong kong, mexcico...bla bla bla....

Thank you all for your concern. The hardest part is NOT KNOWING.

My boss is in the bigger boss's office as we speek. It could be to fire myself or her losing her job or it keep be nothing other then biz.
But treebeard and myself are strong people and we will survie this no matter what the outcome may bring. We have been through tougher times and it seems that when things like this happens to us it only makes us stronger as a couple.

Yeah, don't assume your job is safe. Be prepared in the event you do lose your job. At my company, the layoffs came in rounds. A few hundred every few months. This may only be the first round of layoffs for your company.

catch 22
That SUX!!
He should still get part his retirement I hope?

I have cut out ALL extra's due to fear of future Layoffs. Except Back Packing Stuff (Figure I may need it to live in the woods someday if I loose my house, due to a layoffs)....
But the govt wants people to spend more, so the economy thrives, yet how can you spend more when your worried about having a job and paying bills? Or you can go get 50 credit cards and run them up and claim bankruptcy, when your job gets sent to mexico or china.
Global economy sux....Sorry... I just go political again on this....

Personally, I think some companies are jumping on the layoff bandwagon. They are laying off people during a time when there are so many companies in the layoff mode that one more added to the bandwagon might not be so noticeable to Wall Street. This layoff environment might make it easier for the decision makers to cut costs by downsizing the workforce, whether they actually need to do this or not.

Here we go again!
so far they have fired 5 people and it's not even 9:30am (EST)
this sucks so bad
they are talking about firing another 6 people.
I don't think I will be one of them (at least I pray I won't be)
But I feel so bad for these people. I wish they would fire the people that I don't like instead of the one's that I do.
If I get fired I'm going on a 7 day backpacking trip!!
