Yes, they are necessary. In fact, in most wilderness areas they are required. You can now be ticketed if you are not wearing gaitures. I think this rule is an outrage.

I only started wearing gaiters in the past year or so. I will have to say that during the two snow hikes last year, I thought they were invaluable. My last hike was in a driving rain and they definately kept the water from running down in the top of my boots and wicking down through the socks.

Overall, I can't see going without them.

I tend to avoid wearing gators... they hurt a bit much.

gaiters can save ya from a lot of scratches and slow down mud from entering your boots but they are warmer then bear legs....

I just got my first pair recently. I've only used them once so far but it was raining heavily and they worked just as Chili described. They also kept my laces clean and dry. I love them already. A pair of short gaiters for my trail runners is next on the list. Just high enough to keep my ankle socks dry and keep my laces clean should do the trick.

I've got a pair that are the heavy packcloth nylon around the boot and lighter cloth over the leg. These aren't as hot and still keep the brambles off your legs. They're made by Threshold and I think that Campmor still has them.

I think I'll be bringing the tall gaiters with me this weekend even though I'm using the trail runners. If we decide to dayhike Profile trail on Grandfather Mountain I want to have something between my shins and those nice sharp rocks on that steep section near the top.
