LOL, they were back in the hunting dept.
Also saw a good deal on a $14.26 Blaze Orange fleece zipup coat.
Might be nice to wear around camp during hunting season.

I saw those Stovie......I thought they were quite pretty

At our Wal-Mart, in the hunting dept., I was able to get reflective tape and tacks for marking trail... and a plastic orange vest. The latter was something like a buck. I should buy more! I've tied it around my backpack and now I should have one! I also got little camo gaiters last year on the cheap. So while we won't be seeing Stovey' butt (or whatever!), on me you won't see my ankles!

Um, lizs...latter is spelled "ladder".

And from what I know about ladders, if it cost a buck it certainly can't be of good quality.

I've stumbled on some decent hiking boots at Wal Mart twice. They don't last forever but tend to be light and comfortable (and I don't stumble in them).

I think I just double-posted a review of the latest ones. It hasn't shown up yet.

I can also recommend the $10 Garrity led headlamp that takes 2 coin-sized batteries.

$4.95 at Walmart
$9.95 at REI

coleman nalgene
$4.95 walmart
$9.95 REI

Walmart has some great deals on smaller stuff...they also carry the Starter line of clothing that resembles the REI stuff at 60% lower prices.

Not everything at REI is worth the price.

Trekking Poles
Someone once mentioned finding some cheap trekking poles for about $20 at Wal-Mart or some other discount store...but I couldn't find them at my Wal-Mart...does anyone remember those?

Cool, we have one Super Wal-Mart in our area...I can go there and check...any idea what brand they were or what they were called? And were they in the outdoors section of Wal-Mart or elsewhere?

Dub- I think that was Target that had the $20 poles.
As far as wally world starter shirts...I agree...I have a couple of starter ones as well as a high dollar under armour one and besides the labels can't tell a bit of difference!

Not me
There she was, standing outside the SuperWalmart. She had stringy bottle-blonde hair and eyes of indeterminate color. She was puffing on a Marlboro, and when she smiled at me, I noticed one of her front teeth was broken. She was wearing the kind of shirt that screams "Low Self Esteem" and the kind of skirt that says "Lift for Easy Entry". I was about to go introduce myself when my wife said "Dammit, would you stop checking out the skanks again?"

Then we went into the Walmart and bought two 50-packs of Huggies.

Wal-Mart sucks
I decided that this was the morning to buy my digital camera, so I called the closest Walmart and spoke with the Photo Mgr. I asked him if he would be in because I wanted his guidance in picking out the most appropriate camera. No problem, so I jumped in my truck and drove the 30 miles only to be told he was too busy and couldn't help me today. He was somewhat busy, but it is also a Walmart tactic to understaff in order to save payroll. The result of this is not being able to get decent assistance when you shop...if you're lucky enough to find someone who is knowledgeable about the products in their department in the first place. I told him what I thought of his behavior and returned home with the intent of emailing my disappointment to the corporate office. I'll likely make my purchase at a store where I can get the kind of assistance I need.

The Wal-Mart trekking poles are no good. They won't lock and the plastic tip wears down in no time. I got 2 of the cheaper trekking poles from target $20 and they work much better. Flamegirl got some of the ones that are about $25 and they seem better in my opinion, more ergonomic grips. When we stopped at a Target in Knoxville to get her a second one they had them on sale for $20! They are both made by Kopperdell I think.

I bought a pair of Komperdells from Sierra Trading post for $35, cork grips, carbide tips, and I've had zero locking problems from it.

Well...the problem is...the person I'm bringing with me to TC4 this weekend bought and MSR Missing Link tent...actually, she spent most of her money on the tent. The problem is she doesn't have any trekking poles...or a backpack, etc. I have a spare set of everything gear wise except for poles. So she needs a cheap set to get through the weekend. We couldn't find any at Wal-Mart so hopefully we can find a set at Target.

You will not find your better digital cameras at Wally World. Try Circuit City. They have fairly knowledgeable staff, and they have sales. I bought an open box camera there and am quite satisfied with it. It carries all the usual warranties.

I always cruise the camping section at super WalMart...the food aisles usually turn up some good things as well, and sometimes I find duds for outdoor activities.

Dub - you can actually backpack *without* poles...I do it all the time.

Hey Dub!
Ya know what we do? We keep our nice trekking poles and don't share .... and then dig thru the nasty $1.99 bins at the local Goodwill for loaners. Dicentra and me had a hoot a couple weeks ago! They bundle up all the left behind and lost poles and skis and sell them for dirt cheap.
Check out your thrift stores for ski poles!

Btw...those Crystal Light singles are pretty dern good...I got a pkg on saturday and tried it out on sunday while hiking!

Twig...I can't stand hiking without poles. I tried it at Sipsey and severly missed my poles...good thing they weren't far. I don't take them on dayhikes unless there is a huge elevation change.

But as I stated earlier...trekking poles are required for the Missing Link tent...which both my friend and I have. But I only have one set. I think I'm gonna take Sarbar's advice and check out the thrift store...great idea!

And I've been using Crystal Light for years...they make a ton of flavors!

Hey Dub....
Weird thing is I have been drinking Crystal Light since I was a teen, and the To Go singles of powder (toss it in a 16.9 oz bottle of water) taste even better than normal. Weird, but I am happy!
Yeah, I got Ford a "new" pair of snowshoeing poles (really tiny kids ski poles) for $2...the freaking baskets for his trekking poles are $5!! So I saved a bundle!

ski poles at the salvation army.... or other thrift stores-- sounds like a good idea!

sarbar1 - We get maybe a light dusting once every 5 or 6 years. Never stays more than a day.
Very little market for snow blowers or even windshield ice scrapers. I never even owned an ice scraper till I moved up to Knoxville, TN after I finished school.

LOL... light dusting... pshaw!!! that's nothing to us in Michigan.... We have seen many feet of snow (yards upon yards in the Upper peninsula from what I hear)... now that's what you call a "real" winter!

Also... larger "richer" areas such as Seattle, Atlanta, etc have a lot larger selection of stuff then places like... Auburn Alabama, or Podunk Mississippi in which the population is relativly low in the income scale.
