Nah, tang in the little containers like Crystal Light doesn't weigh anything at all.

Think & I can't drink any of the nutrasweet-- it gives us severe migraines... regular sugar works for us! In general, I don't like Countrytime, but their Raspberry Lemonade is quite good. Like Tang as well!

Yeah, our thriftstores can be good-if you know what ones to shop! I did pick up Ford a like new anarok wind breaker and a Pacific Trails snowboarding jacket recently...very cheaply too!

I missed that post where you needed the poles for the tent, sorry Dub!

It's alright...I like poles anyway. They're great for going up hills...they keep you from falling when you trip...they help navigate tricky footings...help you beat transients on the trail when they harass you, etc.

For you southerners... What about Play it Again Sports? I don't know if you have them ther (I live in the midwest), but they sell used sporting goods relatively cheaply. At least they used to. I honestly haven't been in mine in a while, since they stopped carrying camping stuff. I'm sure you could find ski poles at most of them, though.

There used to be a Play-It-Again in my town, the backpacking stuff was all crap. But that might not representative of the PIA in your town.

Wal-Mart has a giant bin of fleece gloves for $2 a pair back in the hunting section.
Hunter's Select brand non pill fleece in Mossy Oak camo and solid colors. Sizes from kids to XXL mens.

I also found a set of three little tins for $1 with lids back in the kitchen section that look like they would make some good little alcohol burners. Yet another project. ;-)

I might have mentioned this before but in the hunting section Wal Mart sells some Remington brand expidition weight fleece pullovers. They are lightweight (10-11oz for a large) and are very similar to other 100wt fleece products. I highly reccomend them for the price.

Interesting FRONTLINE last week with Hedrick Smith re: Walmart.

[I bet Tilt sneaks in to shop at Wal-Mart at 4am so none of his friends will see him] LOL

It's interesting how raw materials leave this country and return as finished goods -- That's how the British Empire ran their colonies.

Somehow we've managed to reverse the process.

I bought some merino wool socks at Walmart a few weeks ago that were pretty nice for less than $7. They have more nylon content that Smartwool, but they seem a little more puffy. I tried them on a few hikes and so far they seem pretty good.

Here's a real SCORE!
Wal-Mart announced that it will nationally match dollar for dollar the proceeds of all Salvation Army red kettles in front of their stores beginning Thursday through Christmas Eve.

This is one of my fav charities. They have one of the very lowest overhead costs of any charity.

I try to empty my pockets of loose change into their kettles each time I pass one.
It's an easy way of giving and now Wal-Mart will match it!

Target can kiss my butt. They havn't got one penny of my shopping dollars this Xmas.

Thanks for sharing. The local Kiwanis club I'm in rings bells each year. Our town finally got a Wal-Mart a year or so ago, so we started ringing there. I'm passing this along. We usually wind up with $2k or or so for a weekend of ringing.

I'll be the butthead on this one. I'm all for Target. Would Walmart allow Buddhist monks to beg outside their stores for charitable money? How about Muslims asking for donations to the Red Cresent? The only way I'd drop money in the kettle is if they stopped ring the bell. I know, I'm a dingle-ling...

BTW- I love WalMart.

...sure was hard swimming 'cross that creek,
with both hands on my ding-a-ling-aling...

I want you to play with your own ding-a-ling..."

Apologies to Chuck Berry.

I'm sure the donation to the Salvation Army is just a drop in the bucket (For Walmart) when you think of how much money Walmart makes throughout the year-- but it's great that they've decided to help out!

If they're matching what's the buckets it's not chump change. This is many millions of dollars.

How much you wanna bet that the real reason is the marketing coup over the bad publicity Target has received?
dayhiker

12/17/04

Good chance of that dayhiker.
Wal-Mart has done a good job on this, along with several other retailers that have stepped up to the plate after Target screwed them.

I've also read a bunch of stuff on the 'real' reason Target did what they did, but that belongs in a Fuego thread.
StoveStomper
12:36:11 PM

If that's the reason, then it's pretty dang smart on their part. It's a pretty public, "screw you" to Target.

in my small, little town, they got Salvation Army kettles and bells on the downtown corner by the bank for one day. No corporate "lets look good" in my town (no, not sponsored by the bank. But the bank was having a holiday open house and refreshments, making people perhaps more attune to dropping some moola)

Just kids and local people wanting to help out. Not even a single organization to sponsor it

I wouldn't give the Salvation Army the sweat of my armpits. They got caught skimming money from what they collected.
