Was just at Wal-Mart. I got two things I think might work well for backpacking:

1. This one you'll have to tell me if I've been stupid, or if this will work. In the men's dept., they have T-shirts by George (mind you, they have a lot of junk by George -- LOL! "By George!!" I made a funny). Anyhoo, am thinking that George is just their own "snob" line. lol

So they have T-shirts that are 55 percent polyester and 45 percent cotton. Is that enough to make these things breathe?? (if not, I have a T-shirt to take back) Only $8-ish.

2. In the shoe dept, in the slipper area, they have these kind of aqua shoes. Very, very lightweight! Perhaps perfect for stream crossings?? Under $7. Mine are such a bright orange they will blow your socks off!!! (not that socks are needed.. heehehe)

While that blend for those shirts is better than 100% cotton, I don't think it'll hold a candle to coolmax, IMO.

Good deal on the aqua slippers!

i get those 'starter' brand poly shirts. very light weight and cheap. i'm too much of a clutz to spend big bucks on a shirt i'm gonna be tearing up the first time i wear it out in the woods...not sure if its the sanme one you're talking about or not lizzy....

i use the cheapest, lightest walmart flipflops i can find too....only i figured you'd get the pink ones, not orange...

the other night i had to work on an AC unit up on the roof in a thunderstorm. i went to walmart and scored a good rainsuit made by sterns. i was stylin and dry....spent like $40......and the company paid for it!

They're not flip-flops. You actually put your foot in them. I don't think the tread is necessraily too good, but oh well! Lotsa mesh and venting.

Hmmm, see I don't have any high performance-type tops, other than one tank top. So anything is better at this point. Guess I'll have to see on the shirt. (see, I don't wanna spend over $20, and preferably less, on my high-performance gear top. lol)

lizs, if you have a Ross Dress for Less around you they have an active wear section that is awesome. And VERY low prices everyday. I've gotten some great coolmax stuff for $12 and under!

le WalMart has shirts by Athletic Works in the ladies' department. good polyester wicking shirts, in OK colors. also lightweight nylon running/exercise shorts.

if you use an external frame, they have "chairbrellas" in the sporting goods dept. that will clamp onto your frame and can be bent in whatever direction ya need for shade.

I agree with Artex the Coolmax tee shirts are great, I get them from Campmor for about $10.00. I just picked up a pair of very nice water shoes from Campmor for $9.99 and they’re not even orange. I buy Coolmax crew socks from Walmart a package of 2 for around $6.00.

Walmart also has rain gear that is like the Frog Toggs but it only runs about $20. Is this the Sterns stuff?

Yeah its that O2 stuff.
I got one of the starter shirts, but I don't think they're as comfortable as the MH wicked tees or the coolmax one I got the other day. I'm going to go with the Campmor $10 coolmax from now on I think.

I have found that when it comes to shirts I have to have the higher end stuff. I've had the Wickers and the off the rack stuff and they get that permanent funk to them that is unbearable within the fourth wearing.

Then again I stink more than the average bear.

George was a designer successfully used by Asda (store chain) in UK which Wal-Mart bought out. I can't remeber the guy's second name.

I think I comprehend the desire of the lower classes to escape their drudgery and head out into the wilds in whatever garments they can scrounge but is it too much to ask that they be relegated to certain areas? Perhaps raise the cost of backcountry permits and institute fees at trailheads to encourage those who can’t really afford the activity to stick to local parks.

I hate to admit it but I was thinking about those cheap, only color they had left, bought on the way to a hike with a known water crossing, shoes also. Ya'll just think Ya'll have given me a hard time about it. ALA still brings them up from time to time. I don't think he will ever let me live that on down. Miss Opie, Did you get tickets to the Alabama concret yet?

hiking poles
I got a pair of hiking poles at Wally World for under 20 bucks! They are 3 piece locking with ergo handles and straps with a mud basket and a durable tip (plastic I think) on the end. I thought about trying to remove the tip and replacing it with a rubber one. After a recent trip to Frozen Head Mtn. on Good Friday, I was pleased with them. They did slip one time when I stooped down to go under a tree and put too much weight on one of them. It seems ok now tho and it locks fine. $9.87 each and used my son's Wally World discount card to keep them under $20.

Miss Opie you got mail. And I hope your surgery goes well. The people I know of that have had it done says it ain't bad. Its unconfortable for a while but well worth it. Tell OPIE if he can't make it you can find someone else to go with you. I'm sure you would get plenty of takers from this board. I know of some that would travel a lot farther than OPIE would have to. BTW them him that unless you have a ring around your finger you are allowed to do those kind of things. That will stir him up.

Since this thread reminded me of that Aluminum Mug (suitable for drinking, cooking and eating out of) - I was quick to notice one on the shelves of my local cheapo super-market (DeMoulas' Market Basket). Not a bad piece of light weight gear for 3.99.

I picked me up a girl last night missing two front teeth at my local Wal Mart. We sat in the cafe and shared a greasy under-cooked hot dog, a bag of stale popcorn, and shared a coke. Good night only cost me $4.39. Going back tonight to see what else I can score.

Which size mug was it pedxing - the large (1L) or the medium (.65 L) ? BTW I think StoveStomper is still real interested in getting one of each of those mugs if there are any left at the market.

SS: OK... now i'm feeling ripped off... you said they went for two and this went for 3.99 + 5% sales tax.

Anyway... the one I got was a liter (I poured it into a liter soda bottle to check), they also had a smaller one - which is probably the .65 (I think it was 2.99).

I still have the label on it and it is IMUSA. It has an snail mail and an email address on it, in case you or someone else want to consider ordering it to re-sell (maybe they even do small orders).:

e: sales@sanper.com
snail: The Gaumaurd Group Inc. DBA Sanper Distributors, Hilaleah Gardens, FL 33018

If you want me to pick one or more up, let me know and I'll try to get some. They ought to be around for a while. I probably won't have time until after Memorial Day weekend, because I've got to get some work out before heading to Maine for Twig's Spring 3 hour tour (and he he he - hanging out here is not helping with my deadlines - that's the problem with working at home and getting paid by the project).

I think it would work well for BB. I'd definitely post a review and put a link to his site. HOI could do the same - he could ask Sgt. Rock to make a mention of it when he got back. It might encourage people to buy a few extra things from him to spread the shipping costs among several purchases.

I saw a really cool Eveready LED headlamp at Wally World last year that had like five different LEDs in it and had many options for lighting brightnesses and colors. Looked to be just a tad bigger than a Teka. Cost like $12.50. Haven't seen them this season though.

Holy Moly! They were almost out. I got the 1 liter, and something that holds about .75 liters. It's an aluminum mug, but may not be exactly the right brand (the sticker was off). How weird, two days ago it looked like there were plenty and now I see only one of each.

I will have to go and look for those, Ped. What section were they in? If I can't find one, maybe we can work a deal. Sounds like a good piece of lightweight cooking gear and the price is definitely right.

Thanks!
