Ultralight sleeping bagsView Messages“The ultralight range only dip down to 10 degrees. Versalite. They are conservative with their ratings though.” 1:16:34 PM 7/19/04 “they may offer overfill on the bag though, which would take you down to near 0 degs for just over 2llbs.” 1:19:28 PM 7/19/04 “I just now ordered from backcountrygear.com. Western Mountaineering Versalite Super the short version for $335 I think that's a pretty good price. I could've gotten some a bit cheaper, but I have never heard of the website, and I think they did sell the older versions. If I need a warmer bag I can always use 2 bags into each other. Hey...or I rent. Figured right now I will be using a 10 degree bag much more then a 0 degree. And I did like the weight, under 2lbs for the short version. 850+ Fill Down ( I think the older versions only have 750 fill) Hey, thanks for your help. Glad I asked!” 1:25:31 PM 7/19/04 “I'm very happy with my four Western Mountaineering bags. Antelope Super MF,5 degrees, 2# 7oz UltraLite, 20 degrees, 1# 10oz HighLite, 35 degrees, 15oz MityLite, 40 degrees, 1# 10oz They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for.” 1:26:43 PM 7/19/04 “You won't be dissappointed. I'd put it in its stuffsack and then pull it out, just to watch the thing fluff up :o)” 1:27:50 PM 7/19/04 “Dude, you need to get out more!” 1:29:40 PM 7/19/04 “hey, I'm not saying I do this every night..... just when the toy was new ;op” 1:30:42 PM 7/19/04 “I think you will be very happy with your Versalite Super, Gem. I already had my 20 degree UltraLite so I went with the slightly heaver 5 degree Antelope for winter camping.” 1:32:42 PM 7/19/04 “Damnit (or dangid :)) with all this WM talk goin on I'll have to finally get one too. and I just spent $1000 to fix my truck. I'm gonna have no money soon.” 1:35:06 PM 7/19/04 “I like the HighLite best of the bunch. I got it used from a fellow TTer. It's probably a few years old now, with a few years of dirt. The true weight of my bag is now a little less than 17 oz and has kept me (a very cold sleeper) warm down to 38 not wearing long underwear.” 1:36:04 PM 7/19/04 “Hey Bison, if you want me to order it give me a shout. I can get ya 15 % off at moosejaw if you like?” 1:36:44 PM 7/19/04 “Yea, Bison! Only the cool people have WM bags! ;-)” 1:39:18 PM 7/19/04 “Thanks Y2! I'll keep that in mind, have to work out exactly what the budget situation is. Where were you this weekend that was more important than backpacking in West-by-God?” 1:40:12 PM 7/19/04 “Man, I will say that those Marmot bags look pretty sweet. I was really looking at the 800 fp Helium. I know they make bags in the line for women as well. But if I remember, they were still in the $300 range. Still, for a bag that's under 2 lbs., it seems like a pretty good deal.” 1:42:39 PM 7/19/04 “I was engaging in some non-backpacking errrrr activities. How was the trip?” 1:43:09 PM 7/19/04 “Hey, as long as you got some good, um, exercise. There's a thread called "Seneca rocks..." or something like that about the trip.” 1:45:04 PM 7/19/04 “I got a Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15. Nice bag. 800 fill. Under 2 lbs. trekkngirl and I both had them on SierraPalooza last week. They were great.” 5:26:39 PM 7/19/04 “I recently got a Western M. ultralight bag. I think its a mega lite, because its a super lite bag, for large people. Not that i'm that large, but I wanted some room to move around in. It weighs 1.6 pounds!! In a compression bag, it squeezes down to the size of a cantelope. I've used it twice, and in a tent it was fine both times. It is so light it is unbelievable. The downside: priced at $300. I also bought an old Sierra Designs bag on ebay, for my 13 yo daughter for $40, and it is OK. Thank God she likes it! I have good things about Marmot, and Feather Friends, and North Face bags. I have a winter quality WM bag, and I love knowing I'll be warm when winter camping.” 5:37:07 PM 7/19/04 “ If I need a warmer bag I can always use 2 bags into each other. Hey...or I rent.Good answer. Unless a person is rich or does a sufficient amount of cold weather backpacking, it is silly to invest in an expensive, cold weather bag. Two lighter bags or one with a wool blanket may suffice. But, then, maybe it is nice to to have first class gear hanging in the closet all year.” 5:59:43 PM 7/19/04 “What you'll also like is the face that the versalite is wide, so it's easy to get a summer weight bag inside it should you need to.” 6:05:19 PM 7/19/04 “When I first got started in mountaineering and backpacking, I bought a really good down bag, an REI McKinley for $68 (1969). It took me 30 years to wear it out, so it came to about $2 a year. That is a pretty good investment. It still has plenty of loft, but the zipper doesn't work, and it has holes from sparks popping off campfires. I think a $300 bag in 2004 is about the same price as a $68 bag in 1969, so I think it would be an investment you would never regret.” 6:07:44 PM 7/19/04 “$335 for the bag is a pretty good price, well it's regular price, but I have the short version so it's a bit cheaper. 10 dgree bag at 1 lb and 14 ounces for the small bag. Can't beat that. Researched old threads just now, didnt' know so many WM threads are out there. I got a feeling I'll like this bag. Cross your fingers that I don't have to wait too long for it. If I remember correctly that same web site made me wait over a month for a stuff sack. Lets hope I will have better luck with this bag then with the mountainsmith vision. so a 10 degree bag and a 20 degree bag should get me down to what? about 5 degree? Or 0 degree? Oh, and I have a silk liner I can use if it gets even colder. another 10 degree added, at least that's what they said. I didn't check ebay this time. After getting a fake goretex northface I am careful” 6:30:24 PM 7/19/04 “My Wal-mart $10 fleece bag served me quite well at Summer camp, with the scouts.” 7:18:31 PM 7/19/04 “I loved my WM Caribou. 22 oz, full length zip - It seems to have dissapeared, probably was water logged after the fire. Bummer, but at least insurance will cover most of it. Moosejaw had them.” 7:36:45 PM 7/19/04 “yes, moosejaw has a lot of them, but it's really hard to find the short version of almost all WM bags. I don't think I have a choice, i'll have to wait. It'll be worth it.” 7:48:45 PM 7/19/04 “Gemini, look into a Big Agnes, VERY nice bags and reasonable prices too.” 8:45:55 PM 7/19/04 “Gemini - When you say "ultralight bag", it is usually synonymous with "big bucks". You can get the warmth cheap...if you don't mind 4+ pounds.” 8:59:34 PM 7/19/04 “I really don't want a 4lb bag. My backpack is already over 30lb, and I feel like I am packing light.... I know I have to pay more if I want to go light. I did hear good things about the big agnes, but it seams EVERYBODY loves the WM bags.” 9:11:54 PM 7/19/04 “I use a HL Micro. 1.6 pounds. Packs down to 11"x6" Its rated for 40 deg but I have used it to about 35deg. In cooler temps I have used it with a fleece liner. BAMA” 10:02:00 PM 7/19/04 “I'm cheap, cheap, cheap, I would buy an expensive bag, if I had the occassion to use it more than 10X a year, but i don't soooooo. (besides, since I'm only 5'2" i don't need even the short versions of the Mountainsmith or Marmots. I'm currently using a throw-away paramedics polyester blanket that weighs 1 lb with an emergency blanket if it gets colder than 40. And yes I have a 44 oz sleeping bag(synthetic Sierra Designs Lullaby), that I can use in the winter, but I am looking to reduce weight in the summer. Right now, I am collecting any goose-down or other down jackets or vests and looking into a way to recycle them into some sort of quilt. so far i have bought a goosedown vest for $2 at goodwill and I have a down jacket with burn holes at the cabin that has been there forever. It is amazing what you find at thrift stores. I don't really want to make one from scratch if I can salvage these materials.” 4:40:53 PM 7/20/04 “I recently got a WM Megalite from Hermit's Hut. 1lb 10oz for 20 Deg bag. 2 oz over-fill option and shipping is free. Good group of people to deal with, too. WM is without a doubt the best bag I've ever owned.” 4:47:13 PM 7/20/04 “What kind of bag do I need for hiking this September in the Adirondacks? I tend to get cold at night. Should I get an ultra light bag that goes down to 35F or will that be too cold for me?” 11:15:31 PM 8/03/04
