The Sods is under water “We have decided to bag the backpacking part of the trip. The Sods has been socked in with clouds from the moment we arrived. Stayed at Red Creek Campground and did day trips to some of the sites around the area. Today we are moving to Seneca Shadows Campground and then to another site I know about for the Memorial Day weekend, since we don't want to deal with a crowd. If you guys decide to head down to Roaring Plains anyway (how does the color grey sound?), Pennsy and Baume need to know that the Dolly Sods sign at the junction of Forest Service Route 19 and Jordan Run Road was removed. Somebody probably wanted it for their den. The junction is about 10-12 miles (about) from where Jordan Run Road intersects WV route 42. When you come down Route 42, there is a store/gas station on the left after you come around a big left curve, then a greenhouse and Otterbein Church on the right. There is a small road sign on the far side of the road reading Jordan Run Road. The intersection with FS 19 is not marked at all as you approach it. It intersects where Jordan Run Road makes and abrupt left curve. After you pull onto FS 19, there is a small route number sign on the right. The forecast from Thursday on is for lots of rain and some possibility of stream flooding. The Sods and Plains have been socked in in the clouds the entire time we've been down here. But, we are still having a blast, Creek Dancer said to report. Whoever PO'd the weather gods should immediately apologize. This morning when I woke up, I felt something strange on my neck. It turns out that I'm growing gills. Blub Blub Blub Blub... complete trip report will be filed from the submarine when we get home. Blub Blub Blub.” 12:04:06 PM 5/19/03 “Whew! Luckily, Geobeets float!” 12:08:26 PM 5/19/03 “In the town where I was born lived a man named Ge beet And they told us, if you will about the time he grew some gills yes he lives in a yellow submarine a yellow submarine a yellow (and grey) submarine... and on and on” 12:13:23 PM 5/19/03 “Thanks for the post Geo. With all that good news, I think I'll take a "rain check" on the Roaring Plains this time. I'll save those 3 valuable vacation days for a I can airmail my bearikade down for ya if you need a floation device? have fun anyway!” 6:59:43 PM 5/19/03 “"Yellow Submarine"???? WTF? Is that when one pisses in the sleeping bag and dreams of swimming in the warm and gentle ocean only to wake up and discover the awful truth?” 7:28:48 AM 5/20/03 “I'm going up to West Virginia anyway. I've got a few days to kill. I will see just how wet it is and try to make it out to the Rim Trail for at least one night. Dolly Sods is way too popular. This is natures way of flushing the toilet up there.” 7:45:47 AM 5/20/03 Hey "Tom" “Hey "Tom" btw..... We discovered a cave in Otter Creek Wilderness. Down near the mouth of the creek where the black overhead water pipe comes out of the mtn. The pipe is taking water from a creek that comes right out of a cave. The cave goes back about a qtr mile according to folks we talked to. We didn't explore it because we were on our way out and tired.” 8:33:30 AM 5/20/03
