I think I figued it out, something to do with the caching.” 7:56:10 PM 5/19/03 “its in you internet preference, under edit/preferences. You can set it to always update or never. I run macs and pcs daily , so i you ever get troubled post a question i will be glad to help..” 10:53:40 AM 5/20/03 “Yeah... buy a PC... InformationWeek Daily, 2003-05-21 Windows Server 2003 Backup Conflicts With Windows XP Terabyte Computers is recommending that its customers hold off on deploying Windows Server 2003 because of an incompatibility with Windows XP.” 5:54:06 AM 5/21/03 “I HATE my iMac!!! It hates me, too!! It will never refresh (this is at work). I have to change the viewing preferences (number of days) on the main page to get it to refresh. OK, let's continue with its current problem. At work, my cohort was having problems. Boss was running a Norton Disk Dr. on it to fix stuff. I thought, "My, what a good idea!!" So, seeing you could install it, I installed it. I went to run it, and got a message about how it was the wrong version for my iMac (has OS 9). So I trashed it. (now I realize just trashing isn't good, but it was late and I couldn't remember how to uninstall a Mac program) The next morning I started the computer. Got a bomb with a system error right away. Something about Norton Extensions. I called my boss like 10 times. He had me boot the computer from the actual Norton CD. I reinstalled the Norton Disk Dr. program, figuring maybe the system could find its missing Extensions folder. Nada. Still got the bomb. Eventually (Call No. 8) boss said to start it up by unchecking the Norton extensions. Fine, finally got it back up. (And then I ran the Norton Disk Dr. on it and -- funny -- it worked with it then!!) Finally I was able to start it normally. However, I had to figure out where to get into Outlook Express with my prefs again. Also, my icons have changed. Instead of what they should be, they just show up as sheets of paper. When I tried to open a MS Word file, it couldn't find the application. BUT... if I found Word and started the application myself, voila! Then it could find it. It did something else weird yesterday, but I don't remember now what it was. AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGHHHHHH!!! Macs!!! Gimme a PC anyday. At least I can troubleshoot that, or do a system restore!!!” 7:07:08 AM 5/21/03 “Unfortunetly I am getting into advertising production and I need to be able to work with my magazines and ad agencies in the same fomat. So i am sort of stuck with a MAC.” 9:00:30 AM 5/21/03 “LtHiker, so what exactly do you do? Have your own biz, or doing some production on contract or something? I used to do small ads for a local guy who produced turkey diaphragm calls, placed those in national mags. Also, had an opportunity to do some layout from home in a Midwestern regional mag, but my PC was, of course, a deterrent (sp?). I have worked in newspapers and photography for years, and have an older version of Pagemaker and the newest Photoshop on my home PC. I have decided at the paper I need to be doing some of the layout in Quark... need that as a resume item if I'm ever to someday move on. Quark is sure weird compared to Pagemaker! Some day I'll get onto it. Last week I did my first full page, a photo page following a community event. Interesting! Anyhoo... Macs?? YUCK!” 8:30:18 AM 5/22/03 “Lizs, my wife and I have our own company. We do marketing and media planning for several companies and are independant contractors selling advertising into a couple of magazines. We subcontract out most of the actual ad production although we do most of the layout and concept. We also sub out web design. Quark is currently the industry standard for Magazine work, although alot of peole are switching over to Adobe. Mac still rules the advertsing business and unforetunetly Quark for pc's and Quark for Mac are not always compatible. Something to do with the fonts. I think Quark is actually easier than Pagemaker, although pagemaker is more versitial. Good luck with the newspaper.” 8:45:35 AM 5/22/03 “Hmmmmmmm, what kind of subcontracting do you hire? Writing? Photography? Or, overall product? Write me if you need the first two. Am especially good at writing. :-) Want a resume? LOL! Where are you guys?” 8:48:35 AM 5/22/03 “Lizs sorry but i do most of the writing and photography for now. We have two very good cheap production people that we work with for ad work. There is alot of freelance work availible out there, keep your ears open. Quite a few magazines are cutting back thier production departments and forcing the customers to come to them camera ready.” 8:57:41 AM 5/22/03 “we are in CT.” 8:57:55 AM 5/22/03 “Quark in general is way better than pagemaker. I use both, and both will be obsolete before too long, because InDesign will take over. That is once they figure out how to solve the memory problem (memory hog). As far as compatability from pc to mac it will work perfectly fine if the fonts used are available for both pc and mac. lizs, you can do a system restore on a mac also, when starting up hold down your command + option key, until the destop screen appears, than it will ask to rebuild desktop. Sometimes when you get to messing with extensions and prefs, it screws with things, this will reset all. When it comes down to production a mac runs smoother and faster with less problems in ripping files through a rip system. I firmly believe that pagemaker is NOT more versitial that Quark. They are both pretty much equal with a few functions that differ. Quark 6 due out this fall.” 9:55:27 AM 5/22/03 “thanks, cyberghst. I did try rebuilding the desktop that day. I do it every so often. But that is not the equivalent of a PC "system restore," is it? In Quark, I am still trying to grasp how you can make headlines smaller with some key command, and how you size photos in photo windows. LOL... being on it just one day a week isn't speeding up the process any.” 10:45:52 AM 5/22/03 “type changing in small increments shift + command plus < or >. These will change you siZes. For your system restore, refreshing it does help, but if crashing still occurs the problems is in extensions. You can troubleshoot this by holding down shift key when starting, then go into your extensions and figure out the latest extension that was activated. lol, yes working on it one day a week doesnt help much in the growing process.” 11:37:20 AM 5/22/03 “Actually, there's a turd at the heart of every PC. Bill Gates put it there.” 8:36:46 PM 5/22/03
