Gear Wish List & Stealing!!!!View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 18 of 18 messages posted.
Thats right I'm stealing Gear!!! “Stealing Gear Ideas that is..... At OLP I was eyeballing Pennsy's and LT's MSR pocket Rocket. It looks like a sweet stove. However, my friend that works at campmor says the SuperFly may be a better stove, since it takes all canisters and has better pot suport. Anyway, this looks like a good way to lighten up the stove area. See, right now I have a Dragon Fly. Its a great stove, no doubt, but in the summer its a heavy f**ker, and unessasary. Although I could save the chi-ching and use a pepsi can stove. I am for sure going to be stealing LT's extra bladder idea. I saw him do this at OLP and again at the Cats. Sirpete had an incamp bladder too. I like that idea. MSR has a 4litter at 19 beans and change only weighing 3 oz. This looks like a good idea since when I got into camp, I had to pump water for dinner, then pump water again in the morning to top off. With an incamp bladder I would only have to pump once. I also liked LT's silli tarp, 64.00 at campmor. Exensive, but my current 8X10 weighs 2.5 lbs his 8x10 checks in at 13oz. •Do you think I could buy silicone impregnated ripstop nylon from ragshop and make my own???” 8:38:40 PM 5/24/03 “Depending on what you cook the Pepsi can stove is tough to beat and it's free. You can sew your own tarp, but for $64 you won't save all that much money over buying one already made if you use first quality fabric. I don't believe in using second quality fabric for sewing tarps or tents because I saw too many thin spots on the coatings in seconds. I wouldn't buy a tarp with second quality fabric so why would I make one with it.” 8:53:39 PM 5/24/03 “good call from the master” 11:24:30 PM 5/24/03 “Well, I don't think I'm any master at making gear, but I did learn that you can't expect to always save a lot of money by making your own. In most cases you will, but the biggest allure to me is getting custom gear. It's tough to save much money on projects that use a lot of fabric because factories buy it cheap in large rolls and in most cases sew with cheap labor. There's always the fun of using homemade gear.” 7:01:33 AM 5/25/03 “Ice Tea, just wait until you see me new set up at on the Pinchot trail. I thik I am going to have my pack down to a daypack size pack for that trip. 16lbs with food! Just picked up my summer shelter. OR Bug Bivy with my siltarp, combined wieghs 1.68lbs. Also go Auqamira i am going to ditch the filter.” 11:11:16 AM 5/25/03 “First, Rich IS the master. Don't let his modesty fool you. He's the EF Hutton of hiking gear. When he talks, people listen. Tea - I have the Superfly and if you come to the Pinchot hike, you can have it. Pete and I both have the 3litre Nalgene canteen. It's less than $10 and folds up small. Very handy around the campsite.” 4:00:19 PM 5/25/03 “i love my p[ocket rocket and o got these extra legs that latch onto the canister and stabilize it alot. they are prolly less than 2oz.” 6:00:15 PM 5/25/03 “EF Hutton? That's a pretty cool title. Lt, Aquamira is a good way to treat water. I've been using it on and off for 2 years and didn't get sick from bad water yet. Bring a coffee filter or a bandana to filter out big chunks in case you can't find clear water to treat.” 6:52:03 AM 5/26/03 “Richb, I have been slowly working the ack weight down. On the Old Loggers Path i was at 47lbs. my first hike in a number of years, on the Devils Path I was at 37lbs, for the Pinchot Trail I am hoping to be in the low 20's. I like my MSR filter but 1lb is alot. Good idea about the prefilter. I was thinking about some kind of strainer that would fit on a Nalgene Bottle.” 9:30:17 AM 5/26/03 “Pennsy, are you selling it or giving it??? and why do you have both the rocket and superfly??? arn't they the same stove??? Why did you the rocket better.” 10:58:29 AM 5/26/03 “Ice, Have you already forgotten FYAOIII? Canister stoves just don't cut it in the cold. Also, don't bring beer at -20° (when you're old enough). JEEEZ, you guys need us Canucks, sometimes.” 2:25:55 PM 5/26/03 “LOL Gremlin! I think the kid wants a canister stove just for the summer. Tea - why do I have both? By now, you should know the answer to that. Both are great summer stoves. I like the PR because it's a bit lighter and packs small in the little plastic case it comes in. You can have the SF next time I see ya. Lt - another Aquamira convert, cool. I definately prefer it over the tablets. I'm also looking forward to seeing your bug bivy/tarp combo.” 2:49:40 PM 5/26/03 “One warning I have about Aquamira, make sure you tighten the cap enough when you put the bottles back in your pack. I didn't on one trip and one bottle cap came loose and spilled half the bottle of acid in my pack. I still had enough left to finish the trip. I make sure to tighten the caps enough and keep them in small ziplock bag.” 3:17:47 PM 5/26/03 Stealing from LT again “Well I was at Ramsey outdoor today and bought a few of those small nalgene bottles, like the .5 oz and a 1 oz bottle. I'll use these guys for oil.” 3:52:53 PM 5/26/03 “Thanks Pennsy, I'll see yah at PApalooza” 4:54:11 PM 5/26/03 “I got a 4 lt platipus in camp water bag from ramsey outdoor 12 beans, I haven't seen it that cheap anywear else. IT weighs like 3 oz. Like other platipues, its that cleary 3 layer polly jaz, and the zip lock top with an opining in the corner for pouring. I like the platties because of the zip lock, easy cleaing. My first bladder was a camlebak and that sucked when it stunk. Like the nalageen ones it has that flatt bottom so it can stand. I'm happy.” 9:22:23 PM 5/31/03 “Did you ever try cleaning your camelback?” 9:40:05 PM 5/31/03 “yeah its a b!tch!!!! I have the big pipe cleaner thing and the hanging dryer. The biggest problem was drying it. The dryer thing worked, but the platiepuss is just so simple. my camlebak also got a hole in it, and they didn't have a 100oz replacemtn so I got the platpus on a fluke, and now I am pleased with the piece.” 10:50:24 PM 5/31/03
