morning due?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 19 of 19 messages posted.
“I asked LT on one of the last trips how morning due occurs. He explained it as something to do with the tempurature change. Do any of you know the exact reason?? I ask because I'm thinking, why even bother setting up a tent or tarp when its not suposed to rain. Then I relized that the due would kill yah. However, if a tarp can't prevent due on your gear, then whats the poin of the tarp anyway. PS: Tell me how to spell due” 8:49:54 PM 5/26/03 “Dew, Tea. When the air is saturated with moisture, and the amount of water evaporating is equal to the amount of water being condensed, the dew is formed because the water has to have something to settle on. When it's low to the ground, that is what you see as dew. I think that's a cloose analysis of it w/out getting too wordy...” 8:56:22 PM 5/26/03 “Listen to the weatherman. He says something about the dew point every night. In my neighborhood sleeping under the stars is impossible. The dew point is always higher than the evening temperature.” 9:01:40 PM 5/26/03 “And I thought this was a thread about the song???? 8)” 9:05:21 PM 5/26/03 “It could have been about morning wood, but matt would have banned that.” 9:09:22 PM 5/26/03 “Thats true! 8)” 9:11:49 PM 5/26/03 “I thought it might be about a library book. Hey Mikey!” 9:15:19 PM 5/26/03 “Hey Tango whats up girl? 8)” 9:17:22 PM 5/26/03 “it's like if you slept in a cloud, you'd get all wet...cause it's just moisture....we get alot of fog here, by the rivers...and it's mighty dewy, lemme tellya... mike...great idea for a song! anybody ever seen fog runners? i have!” 11:00:14 PM 5/26/03 “Another way to say what Treebeard said is that the warmer air is, the more moisture it can hold. When you cool moist air, it reaches a point where it can't hold all the moisture that's in it and that's when you get precipitation like dew(or fog, or frost on windows). That point is called the dew point. Just like hot water will dissolve salt or sugar, hot air absorbs mositure. Just like the salt (or sugar) collects on the bottom when the water cools, the water collects on surfaces when the air cools. Good for you in thinking about the due Tea. It's useful to keep in mind that you can get condensation from the moisture that is already in the air - so that even a tarp won't completely eliminate it.” 11:15:37 PM 5/26/03 “Well, everybody else covered your question so I thought I'd add a couple of helpful suggestions for dealing with dew. A tarp will help with dew but you'll still need to turn your boots upside-down and cover anything you don't want to get wet. Stuff sacks help. You may want to give your down sleeping bag a wash-in DWR coating with Nikwax Downproof. They make a wash-in DWR for fleece also.” 7:10:02 AM 5/27/03 “Skullcap, Have you used that wash for down bags? I'm thinking it might be a good idea, just wondering if it's simple and effective or difficult and worthless. How long does the water resistance last?” 9:21:57 AM 5/27/03 “I don't know for sure how long it lasts. It's supposed to last about as long as any factory DWR coating. It's also supposed to "refresh" in a warm dryer just like factory DWR coatings. I have washed my down bag in it and so far it has worked fine, though I've only used it once. It rained and was very humid that weekend though and the down stayed dry. I considered it a good test under very damp conditions. My bag has a waterproof shell but the top zips off to convert from a zero bag to a 15 bag. So when it's a 15 bag the top has regular nylon that's not DWR. That's the part I was concerned about and the reason I used the Downproof. I'll have to get back to you on the duration as soon as I have a better idea about it myself.” 9:33:28 AM 5/27/03 Morning Dew “I pitched my tent in a hardwood stand raw beauty abounds and nature at hand a small fire is burning and smoke curls into the sky moon light filters through the trees, enough to see by a north wind blows softly and I take comfort from the breeze Jack Frost has left his mark, I see the many colored leaves in no time at all, or so it seems, the sun peeks over the mountain-top, it`s a new day morning dew clings to everything as the sun`s rays kiss the last traces of frost away” 4:33:11 AM 5/28/03 Long Time No See Bigfoot “Welcome back, oh one whose pedal extremities are HUGE.” 4:49:32 AM 5/28/03 LOL “Hiya Buddur! How`s things in your world? I`m not back, I just sneak in from time to time, there`s never any threads for me to write on like there used to be. Take care of you! And I wish you the best in all things,.....” 5:14:32 AM 5/28/03 “I swear by that waterproofing washing liquid..wal mart actually sells it. rox” 9:44:26 AM 5/28/03 “Morning dude!!! hey rox/clem...... I think I might have spotted that stuff in Wal-Mart. Geez, I don't know what size bottle. Stood maybe 6" tall. And I debated on a purchase....” 10:09:44 AM 5/28/03 “I use it on my tent, bag, everything,, it works really well and I bought it last summer and I still have it.... rox” 10:12:43 AM 5/28/03
