Continuing our conditioning and testing for the thru hike of the John
Muir Trail we took 3 days and 2 nights to go the Sierra. I hoped to
go to Sam Mack Meadow and then on to the Palisades Glacier itself. We
wanted to enter into the John Muir Wilderness on Friday and come out
Sunday. But being FLEXABLE was what this trip was all about. And that
paid off big time for us.
We saw our first snow avalanche, day and night we heard granite
boulders coming loose and causing thier own rock avalanches.
Cautiously avoiding those immediate areas. We were rewarded with the
more peaceful side of the Sierra.

The trip report is with the pictures:

Great Pics
As usual! What elevation were you guys at when you were postholing? I'm curious as I'm headed out next weekend, thinking I'll be OK without my snowshoes up to 8,000' or more...

Nice..

The Palisades is one of my favorite places. I learned a great deal about the mountains and myself there. Your photos took me back.

We began deep postholing near 10,400' However it really depends on the sun exposure, north facing slopes etc. There are dozens of reports of recent Avalanches. The avalanche danger in the Sierra is very high, so be careful.

I enjoyed the photos and your report, too. Looked long and hard to make out that climber on the glacier, but didn't see her.

Was she actually climbing up the avalanche debris the day after it broke loose?

Thanks for putting together your journal.

Hey Tekdude How are you doing?
If you click on the normal size window. Then you can see the climber. There is a path on the right side of a avalanche debri field. There is also a path where a large boulder slid down. The climber is using that path about half way up the Glacier. If I had had my zoom the climber would be more distinctive. In addition the climber was followed up by two of his or her companions. You can see a small dot with a shadow. That is the best a 28-105 Tamarin Lens will do. :)

Thanks Davexx

Fantastic pictures WLD! Thanks for posting them.

No snow at 8000' where you guys were, but we had plenty at 7000'. Not fair!
