“Alright you Yankees... Listen up! Space Weather News for May 28, 2003 http://spaceweather.com SOLAR ACTIVITY: Big sunspot 365 unleashed a series of powerful X-class solar flares on May 27th and 28th. At least one coronal mass ejection(CME) appears to be heading toward Earth. The CME could trigger auroras when it sweeps by our planet later this week. The sunspot itself is big and impressive; you can see it using safe solar projection techniques. HOT COMETS: A pair of comets swung perilously close to the sun on May 23rd and 24th. A new SOHO movie shows what happened.” 11:51:21 PM 5/27/03 “COOL!! I remember in school way back when, holding a paper plate behind the eye peice of a telescope to see the outline of the sun spots . Is there a homemade gadget for veiwing without a telescope?? Streamweaver” 12:21:27 AM 5/28/03 “Didn't your momma tell you not to look at the Sun? <G>” 1:30:43 AM 5/28/03 “OH... just in case you missed it on the tube a few days ago, here's a link to those photos of Earth, taken from Mars (using the MOC on the MGS by the guys from MSSS). ![]() (a view of Earth from Mars... using a small telescope)” 1:42:49 AM 5/28/03 “ ![]() (Earth and the Moon)” 1:49:25 AM 5/28/03 “"X-class solar flares" Does one have to be an adult to observe or can my teenager look?” 7:06:40 AM 5/28/03 “my aurora hasnn't been working. i change the batteries and everything.....i'm miffed!” 9:42:15 AM 5/28/03 “Verry Funnie, NS! S -- just spin the batteries a few times to improve contact... and if that doesn't work, thump it once or twice. Lightly.” 9:58:20 AM 5/28/03 “oh i thumped and i tried the contackt, which had a white powdery substance on them. don't forget, i'm a maintenance technician IRL. i think it's the 'board'. i'm gonna take it the gear store where i bought it and see if i can exchange it....” 10:02:06 AM 5/28/03 “Oh, in that case, soak it in warm salty water! Back to the Space Cadet Thing... the aurora should be crankin' tonight for you Northern Latitudinal Types. Check that first link. And in re: those photos... "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives," wrote the late astronomer Carl Sagan of a photo taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft as it left our solar system in 1990. (Quote Of The Day from InformationWeek Daily)” 11:18:16 AM 5/28/03 “Tilt, I wasnt planning on looking at the sun!! The way we did it at school was point the telecope at the sun and hold a plate behind the eyepeice the light coming through the telescope reflected onto the plate and allowed you to see the sunspots which basically showed up as shadows . Streamweaver” 12:59:28 PM 5/28/03 “We are supposed to have rain tonight.” 1:16:10 PM 5/28/03 “PT Auroras seem to have a loose battery contact "issue". I have gotten two of them for less than $3 each at REI scratch-n-dent sales because of this. "Returned because it won't turn on." LOL! Pretty easy fix if you can catch it before the loose battery screws something up. You may want to keep an eye on that in the future.” 2:56:50 PM 5/28/03 “SpaceWeather.com sez auroras should be popping tonight... and there's No Moon! so Git Out Side You Yankee Types! ('round midnite... northern tier states) I'm taking the Auspex up to Bussey Point for an overnight test rum. I hope the squirrels don't eat me.” 3:19:57 PM 5/28/03 “YES, a "test ruM"... and a little Port, too! <hahaha>” 3:21:55 PM 5/28/03 “You'll probably end up seeing colors! Watch out for the moving ones.” 3:30:30 PM 5/28/03 “Think anything will be visible from New York City?” 3:41:54 PM 5/28/03 “NEW YORK CITY ! ? ! ? ! get a rope........” 8:43:52 PM 5/28/03 Strat “Are you suggesting that I hang myself?” 10:56:18 PM 5/28/03 “Salsa Commercial Flashback.” 8:13:40 PM 5/29/03 “Great link Tilt that website is so very pimp! 8) Thank you.” 9:43:46 PM 5/29/03 “Geomagnetic storm is ONGOING. This photo was taken last night 50 mi./80 km north of Québec City... ![]() (check out the aurora gallery)” 10:03:37 PM 5/29/03 “P.S. The rum, the auspex and the (princeton tec) aurora worked perty good yesterday. I've got to put a nother piece of closed-cell foam in the lumbar area, tho' --- those fastex buckles were trying to jab my kidneys.” 10:11:52 PM 5/29/03 “How are your eyes doing, Streamweaver? <G>” 10:28:43 PM 5/29/03
