Is anyone familiar with the Yuma, Arizona area? Weather patterns, hiking opportunities, water, trees?

I'm not sure which one, but Yuma is one of the less desirable orifices of the earth.

Weather: HOT!!
Water: end of Colorado River
Trees: lotsa Palo Verde
Hiking: plenty of desert

There is about a 3 foot mound of old adobe that is a remnant of the former Yuma Prison which is immortalized in many westerns.

Actually I think there was something in a recent Backpacker about an area relatively close to Yuma (or maybe it was Tuscon). A new wilderness area maybe.

There is nothing in Yuma but heat and desert. There is no water...the Chocolate Mt.s are treeless, and there is no shade in the place. Drive a couple more hours and you wind up in east San Diego County where there is certainly more opportunity for wilderness stuff.

Yuma? Why Yuma? That's one of two places they put the hose when they give the world an enema. The other is Glasgow, Montana

Yuma
As others have said, it is hot - usually among the hottest places in Arizona. Given that it was 110 in Phoenix this week, and the rainy season doesn't begin for two months, and the Colorado River has mostly vanished by the time it gets there thanks to too many people upstream who claim its water -- well, have fun. There is a small area not far with native palm trees, which is of interest, but for the rest, it is just a place to eat lunch on the way to California.

I was in Yuma in April for work. I wouldn't want to live there, but some people love it. I did have a great meal at Julieanna's Patio Cafe.
