“I can not imagine wanting a $3000 kayak. I have heard the poly kayaks refered to as a good beginner kayak. What exactly defines a beginner kayak and an advanced kayak. Please tell me that it is not about ability. You know, the ability to pay for a more expensive one.”

“The tupperware yaks are fine, even sometimes preferred, over the fiberglass or kevlar. They're heavier and not quite as effecient, but you can bash the crap out of them on an expedition and they don't break. I paddle a Prijon Kodiak and I love it.”

“Hey SuperTroll...have you been to the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge to kayak yet? Just wondering, I've never been there and I've lived around H'ville my whole friggin life.”

“In my canoe days I explored parts of the refuge, I intend to revisit them with the kayak.

There are many areas here in the northern half of the state I intend to visit short term, like the Sipsey, the Elk river, The Flint River, The Tennessee River and assorted lakes...(I'm gonna be a BIZZZZY Boy...LOL).”

(I'm also carrying a few other things each time I go out, like a map & compass, cell & spare battery, duct tape, chem lights, [red,green,and white],a lighter, a change of clothes and a silponcho tarp. I got an umbrella velcroed to the camelback strapped up close on the front deck fer water).

“Oh, and go get yourself hardware for deckline. The Carolina is lacking good deckline. The elastic stuff won't help you empty or get back into your boat.”

“I have the large commercial version of the pack Towel, in a thicker material, folded it is about the size of a thick sponge, and it absorbs lots of water...

The deck lines idea really is a good one, though I think I'll ADD a stiff nylon line to the existing bungie...

Oh, and Rad...If'n ya knew how many chem lights I already have your eyes would bug out...I work for the Department of Defense remember?...(Red/green/white are for running lights in case I get caught out after sunset...)”

He has always wanted to go up there and since I am a backpacker not a Kayaker I know nothing about Kayaking but i am super interesed!!

So here is the question I am starting my research for the trip now so I can all the stuff taken care of!

I would like recomndations for areas, outfitters, part of the year and any and all other random bits of advice?

I use a shammy(SP?) cloth. I can just spread it out on the bottom and it soaks up anything that may collect down there. Do you find you need the pump often?”

“Nigal, my wifes pumping habits are really none of your durn business LOL!”

“Makes me miss my old SOT that self-bailed real well. The 10 essentials for that boat were a paddle...........uh, sun!............and sun glasses! How many was that?”

“I find I need the pump everytime I practice rescues. I imagine when we start hitting the Great Lakes we'll be doing them for real occasionally.”

“ok got my kayak, problem is it won't go where I wanted to store it. Now I have a kayak sitting in my living/dining room. Not sure how many times a night I have to step over it.

Anyone used the storage system where you hang/suspend it from the ceiling?”
