Severe ThunderstormView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 25 of 25 messages posted.
“A severe thunderstorm just hit. I turned the computer off and closed the outside door. Then I turned on the TV. The weather station was just issuing an alert. They had the storm located 20 miles from here and moving at about 30 mph in this direction. But it was already here. According to the time of the message they had just started the alert, late and mispositioned. I then turned off the TV. The main part of the storm lasted about five minutes. The rain stopped after about 15 to 20 minutes. They generate no credibility. From their past record, having missed an advance notice on this storm, they will now issue a severe thunderstorm warning for almost every cloud that they see during the next week. They must have been on a long coffee break during the development of this storm. To make it worse, I believe the Melbourne Weather Service, which issued the warning, is located about one block from me at the Melbourne International Airport. I don't think their building has any windows.” 2:40:48 PM 6/03/03 “I like when they issue a "Take Cover" alert and everybody runs outside to see the storm. Tornado warnings are great for that!” 2:42:50 PM 6/03/03 “well I am very glad you are safe. we lost our pc because my daughter forgot to turn off the PC and the storm hit and hit HARD and POP, lights out. she felt pretty bad, but hey its just a machine. so glad your ok.” 2:44:00 PM 6/03/03 “Are you in Australia?” 3:01:49 PM 6/03/03 “No! Florida.” 3:31:45 PM 6/03/03 “We just had a pretty severe t-storm here too. It started right when the ac repairman showed up. Luckily he hung out until the storm ended.” 3:36:46 PM 6/03/03 “We had some nearby over here, but none hit near me. Some pretty wicked looking ones moving in from the gulf now though.” 4:29:53 PM 6/03/03 “But artex, doesnt that happen everyday at 3:00pm? LOL” 4:34:55 PM 6/03/03 “I have surge suppressors on all my computer equipment.” 4:38:27 PM 6/03/03 “EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL 935 AM EDT TUE JUN 3 2003 .DISCUSSION...MORNING SOUNDINGS ACROSS CENTRAL FLORIDA WERE QUITE MOIST....WITH NEARLY 2 INCHES PRECIPITABLE WATER...WHICH LOOKS SUPPORTIVE OF ANOTHER DAY OF AT LEAST SCATTERED SHOWERS/STORMS. H50 TEMPS WERE NOT AS COOL AS YESTERDAY AT MINUS 9 DEGREES AND DO NOT SEE MUCH DRY MID LEVEL AIR...SO MAIN THREATS SHOULD BE HEAVY DOWNPOURS AND LIGHTNING. http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/fl/discussion.html” 6:37:34 PM 6/03/03 “jeffers - Thanks for the link. Do you work for the weather service? Your pictures at your homepage are beautiful. Is that you at Handies Peak?” 7:15:35 PM 6/03/03 “jeffers is our resident meteorology nut, storm chaser and trip planner extraordinaire... where ya been, nowslimmer?? heheh, I almost typed "nowslimer" LOL!!” 10:31:23 PM 6/03/03 “I guess I've become soggy. One can only absorb so much.” 6:17:30 AM 6/04/03 “I'm getting soggy here too. The news last night had a special on weather related depression to give you an idea how gloomy it's been this month. I looked into a job at the weather service once, any 4 year degree and 20 hours of meteorology classes get you $17,600 to start, a little less than I can afford to make. I like the warning/watches link because it takes the local media out of the loop. Sometimes they see higher priorities for their newscasts and leave us in the dark. Also good is the ham radio skywarn net. In my state they have one or two people at the NWS with radios, then the state wide coordinator and each county coordinator on the state frequency, then each county has all of its mobile and base units on its own frequency along with that county's coordinator. Anything that comes from a skywarn spotter, and/or anything that comes into NWS from the public, law enforcement, etc., gets broadcast through the state channel, along with pointers from the radar operators as to where the areas of NWS interest lie so the spotters can get into position. The information goes out 5 to 10 minutes before the public broadcast outlets get it out. That's me on Handies, my first time above 14,000 feet. I had taken a shot at Uncompahgre, another 14er a few days earlier but got chased off by storms about 13,300. Glad you like the pictures. I'm heading out in a couple weeks to get some more, this time with a digital camera that hasn't seen the mountains yet. Hopefully, the batteries will hold out long enough to get a lot more. :-)” 10:42:58 AM 6/04/03 “Good luck on your trip and with the camera.” 11:45:58 AM 6/04/03 “We've had rain since yesterday. Lots of wind gusts too, to keep the driving interesting. Lots of lightning too.” 1:07:56 PM 6/04/03 “It is hard to believe that the local television station didn't alert you before you turned the TV on.” 1:11:35 PM 6/04/03 “i dont know about you man, but storms scare me that is when the aliens are out” 1:12:34 PM 6/04/03 “BacPac, that is funny.” 1:13:53 PM 6/04/03 “bacpac - Good point. I based my conclusion on the fact that they did not have that message up until about the same time that I turned the set on. (The msg. has a time associated with it.) They could have had a previous msg. But this msg. reported the storm 20 miles or more away, when it was already here, with 50 mph winds. I should have worded my post better.” 1:41:53 PM 6/04/03 “You catch stuff like that and I can get you a job as an editor, bacpac. Just name your location.” 8:24:43 PM 6/04/03 “I've been watching the weather sites lately. Looks like we're already into the summer patterns of afternoon storms every day. Kinda hard to dry out your gear like this.” 9:20:54 PM 6/04/03 lizs “Headlines are editorials. I have learned to look for the facts. Here is a trick. Read a headline. Then read the story. Be objective.” 9:28:36 PM 6/04/03 “Wicked storm forming overhead right now. Nonstop thunder. I walked down to the water a few minutes ago and watched some really awesome bolts of lightning. There's potentially and even bigger storm moving in from the east right now, but it's a little ways off. I love thunderstorms!!!” 6:07:05 PM 8/01/03 “I am surrounded right now! Nothing falling on me though! Nothing compared to the other night though.” 6:09:23 PM 8/01/03
