Ticks

“I work in a doctor's office and we are seeing alot of tick bites. It looks like they are going to be bad this year so be careful.

We had a 3 year old child yesterday with a tick on his scrotum. The poor little boy screamed for 10 minutes until they pulled it off. It just broke my heart when I found out what the bloody scream was for.”

“I've been seeing more of them in areas that a few years ago were free of ticks. I pulled one off my hip last week. So far I didn't see any of the smaller deer ticks, just the bigger ones with a marking on their back. Maybe dog ticks?”

“The wood ticks are extremely bad in my area this year. I've lived in or near the woods nearly all my life and never found a tick on me.

We cut some of the weeds down at the back of the property line and my 5 year old had one crawling on her hair. We went to my sister's recreational property and hiked in the woods. We found six crawling on me when we came out. I found one more when I got home. Two on my oldest and none on my two littlest.

My sister's dog is a "shop dog." When he comes to my desk for attention, I check him over for ticks. We haven't found any attached to him since she started using that expensive stuff from the vet.

My understanding is that the deer ticks that carry limes disease aren't as plentiful. I hope that's right.”

“Years ago, before I became too mature and dignified to enjoy innuendo - I worked as an aide in a Psychiatric Hospital while going to college part time. We admitted a patient with a tick in her pubic area. The nurse had a hard time getting a grip on the tick with the unit tweezers, so one of the psychiatrists did the job. He extracted the tick whole - without leaving the head or mandible in.

Later, some of us snuck over to his office and put a business sign on the door.

You can purchase permanone in 13% solution and treat your fabric items (clothing, socks, tent, tarp, sleeping bag, etc.). With the 13% solution it can last up to one year or 50 machine washings. I have a pair of chaps treated that I wear when in deer tick areas. I stuff my pant legs in my socks and put the chaps on. It almost eliminates the tick problem.”

a couple of days ago I found a small tick on me, it wasn't attached anymore , and I think it was dead. I am not sure if it ever was attached.

Yesterday I found a strange looking mark on my leg. Almost like something could be in there, but it also could be just an ingrown hair or something.

Hurts a little, but not bad, almost like a bruise.

My question: what does a tick bite look like after you scratch the body off and the head is still attached?”

“Itchy and slightly swollen, but does not produce much if any puss. Dark red center and slighly raised (particularly after scratching the hell out of it.)

Calamine lotion or other similar balms help.

“Strat, the permanone is suppose to be harmless. The reason you apply it to cloting only is because it becomes inert when applied to the skin. It was developed for the military specifically for application to fabric. I didn't use it yesterday and got six ticks off of me. Four were bit in.

When I'm in a real ticky area, when I take my boots off in the evening, I literally dump dead ticks out of my boots and off my socks (after using permanone and stuffing my pant legs in my socks.)
If your spot is small, like an infected hair, just watch it and keep a check on your tempature for a couple of weeks. If the spot becomes a "bullseye" bruise (round bruise area radiating from the bite area,) it could be Limes disease. Get it checked as soon as possible.”
