“I don't understand something regarding a few HTML pages I have done recently. It's weird tho. I can open them locally, and they appear to look fine code-wise -- but when I upload them to my anycities server they show up as 'zero K'. I don't have a clue. Anyone have any inpout for me??” 11:44:46 AM 6/04/03 “Sounds like they are not getting uploaded!” 11:46:12 AM 6/04/03 “It's an occaisional FTP problem. I don't remember what I did to solve it though. Delete the ZK file and try again.” 11:47:15 AM 6/04/03 “nope.. didn't fix it HPM.” 11:52:47 AM 6/04/03 “Interesting. I've run into this before FTPing up to a unix platform, so I'm guessing they are a unix shop. In your FTP program is should give you a choice of what format to FTP the file. There are two choices, one is binary and I can't remember what the other is. Try the other format.” 11:56:04 AM 6/04/03 “Oh, look at the properties of your files on your home box just to be sure they look good there.” 11:57:30 AM 6/04/03 “you can't FTP to anycities.. they have a dorkie upload screen.” 12:08:12 PM 6/04/03 “Then the problem is completely theirs and we can't do anyhting from this side. Sorry TD, yer gonna have to talk to a tech support person.” 12:09:59 PM 6/04/03 “lol.. have you TRIED to reach anyone by phone at anycities?? It's an answering machine.” 12:13:06 PM 6/04/03 “HPM, I believe the other format is ascii.” 12:20:36 PM 6/04/03 “???????? Nice service.” 12:20:43 PM 6/04/03 12:21:19 PM 6/04/03 “lol.. I just reached the webmaster by phone.. he told me they are migrating all the files to a larger server.. and that's why I got the error.. but told me he would fix mine ASAP.” 12:22:01 PM 6/04/03 “Sounds like you hit the lottery and got a human. Better pick up some powerball tickets pronto!” 12:23:04 PM 6/04/03 “Say TD, I never got any feedback about TC3 and doing the website. What gives?” 12:24:07 PM 6/04/03 “lol.. we will talk soon Mike.. been buried here.” 12:30:30 PM 6/04/03 “i've got some encoding issues. check out this page http://www.aldebaranbulldogs.com/ does it come up with lots funny A's for you? if i change the view/encoding to unicode they all go away fine, but how come i can't get it to always come up that way?” 8:06:44 AM 8/11/06 “is there some tag or something to put in my header to make it come up as unicode rather than western windows (which puts all those crappy wingdings in my text?)” 8:12:10 AM 8/11/06 “What are you writing your code in?” 8:12:35 AM 8/11/06 “You also need to add a doctype to the top of your code like: !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd" html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en" each of those should be angles. Doctype depends on what version of HTML or XHTML you are coding in. last edited: 8/11/06 8:16:16 AM” 8:15:37 AM 8/11/06 “woah. that's way over my head. i've been mainly using the html editor that comes with the host i use (imhosted.com) after i work on it/save it, when i view i online sometimes it has those wingdings in it. so then to fix it i view the source, save the file and open it with notepad clean up the windings, then upload the file back to my host - which seems to fix the problems ˝ the time. the files have .htm extensions. does that make any sense to you?” 8:57:01 AM 8/11/06 “I don't have a whole lot of experience in using homegrown host editors but I've always been unhappy with them because of stuff like this. I take it that those As are supposed to be blank spaces? Does their editing tool allow you to use non-breaking spaces instead? It looks like the problem is their tool is translating blank spaces as that A character.” 9:35:34 AM 8/11/06 “the funny thing is, i didn't put those spaces in either. i've also seen it put in scattered little check boxes. should i just avoid using their editor? any suggestions other than frontpage?” 9:41:34 AM 8/11/06 “Huh, well if using a different editor seems to solve the problem then I'd just forgo their editor. I'm a dreamweaverMX/notepad kinda guy. I don't like frontpage but it can do the job quite well. If you have a copy then by all means use it.” 9:44:50 AM 8/11/06 “I think there is a freeby editor called notetab that quite a few guys I know use.” 9:45:41 AM 8/11/06 “okey dokey. i'll look for it. thanks for the advice” 9:49:08 AM 8/11/06 “need help with a 3-page email form, can't figure it out. I got the php, and the single page works good, but I keep getting an error on the 3-page form.” 10:53:35 AM 9/01/06
