I don't understand something regarding a few HTML pages I have done recently.

It's weird tho. I can open them locally, and they appear to look fine code-wise -- but when I upload them to my anycities server they show up as 'zero K'.

I don't have a clue. Anyone have any inpout for me??

Sounds like they are not getting uploaded!

It's an occaisional FTP problem.

I don't remember what I did to solve it though.

Delete the ZK file and try again.

Interesting.

I've run into this before FTPing up to a unix platform, so I'm guessing they are a unix shop.

In your FTP program is should give you a choice of what format to FTP the file. There are two choices, one is binary and I can't remember what the other is. Try the other format.

Oh, look at the properties of your files on your home box just to be sure they look good there.

lol.. I just reached the webmaster by phone.. he told me they are migrating all the files to a larger server.. and that's why I got the error.. but told me he would fix mine ASAP.

i've got some encoding issues.

check out this page

http://www.aldebaranbulldogs.com/

does it come up with lots funny A's for you?
if i change the view/encoding to unicode they all go away fine, but how come i can't get it to always come up that way?

is there some tag or something to put in my header to make it come up as unicode rather than western windows (which puts all those crappy wingdings in my text?)

What are you writing your code in?
humanpackmule

You also need to add a doctype to the top of your code like:

!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"

html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"

each of those should be angles.
Doctype depends on what version of HTML or XHTML you are coding in.

woah. that's way over my head.
i've been mainly using the html editor that comes with the host i use (imhosted.com)

after i work on it/save it, when i view i online sometimes it has those wingdings in it. so then to fix it i view the source, save the file and open it with notepad clean up the windings, then upload the file back to my host - which seems to fix the problems ˝ the time. the files have .htm extensions.

does that make any sense to you?

I don't have a whole lot of experience in using homegrown host editors but I've always been unhappy with them because of stuff like this.

I take it that those As are supposed to be blank spaces? Does their editing tool allow you to use non-breaking spaces instead? It looks like the problem is their tool is translating blank spaces as that A character.

the funny thing is, i didn't put those spaces in either.
i've also seen it put in scattered little check boxes.

should i just avoid using their editor? any suggestions other than frontpage?

Huh, well if using a different editor seems to solve the problem then I'd just forgo their editor.

I'm a dreamweaverMX/notepad kinda guy.
I don't like frontpage but it can do the job quite well. If you have a copy then by all means use it.

I think there is a freeby editor called notetab that quite a few guys I know use.
