The signals coming out of the middle east recently have been promising.

This war on terror thing may be working. The attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq have elimitated much of the terror support. Perhaps other terrorist financial supporters are drawing up like puddles in the desert.

With no money coming in, the Palestinians are looking at new options. I think Israelies have recognized that Bush is not like the puppets they enjoyed in the past.

Peace in the middle east? Not a reality, but hope never hurts.

Now the U.S should go bomb Chechens...

A woman terrorist just blew up a Russian bus near an airfield. Authorities say she was trying to get inside the airfield.

BP, I am not posting to rain on any parades here. As a matter of fact, I would love to see a peaceful resolution to the Israeli/Palestinian situation. However, Bush hasn't put anything on the table that wasn't presented during the talks Clinton and Barak had with Arafat in July 2000. They were giving away the works and Arafat turned it down, saying it wasn't enough. The only difference here is a new player has been added to the process which has made it easier for Bush being that Abbas has stood up and called for a stop to violence against the Israelis. But, in the face of this, Arafat yesterday started in with the rhetoric already. He and his sympathizers have said Sharon is not sincere and that Israel should pull out of all, not some, of the settlements in the West Bank. You can't dismiss the possibility of anti-Israeli forces trying to derail the process. Optimism is great and I am not faulting you for it, but the rotting process is starting already. I just read that Hamas has chimed in against Abbas. BP, I really hope this amounts to more than just a passing photo op from them shaking hands the other day, but the hatred there is so deep rooted that it will need a lot more than we have seen to get this thing on track. And this link is not very optimistic either...

Wel put, tree. I'm all for giving Bush credit for whatever comes out of the peace process. If the results are excellent, he deserves credit for it. The reverse also applies.

getting Arafat out of the formal negotiations has been, IMHO, the most promising step thus far. i hope this Abbas dude can stand up to the totally irrational leadership factions that have railroaded the Palestinian cause into continual failure. i don't really trust Sharon either, but i don't believe Arafat ever really wanted peace.

I agree, Tar. Arafat is a criminal. Sharon is as well, however.

"So dubya will be the Pretender of the U.S.

He is nothing but a scumbag anyway.

He was arrested for theft in 1968 and lied about it.

DUI in 1972 and lied about it.

DUI in 1976 and lied about it.

History of drug and alcohol abuse and lied about it.

Refused to take a drug test in the National Guard (fear of failure?) and lied about it.

Was AWOL for 18 months and lied about it.

Entered into business deals with known organized crime figures.

That's three strikes and you are out. In 42 states dubya would be classified as career criminal.

This loser is nothing more than a clinton clone who happens to be a republican."

They are always making mistakes, BP. But, these are terrorists and don't think the way rational people do. They are hell bent on destruction and they are willing to die for it. That is what makes a terrorist scary. When fear of consequences no longer has any meaning, you have an enemy to be feared. Abbas isn't going to sway these people, unfortunately. Nothing will...
