Way too funny, guys. But Hilleberg rules!!

I think it is best to have a tropical weather tent, a winter tent, a hammock and a tarp. I like to make decisions before heading out for a backpacking trip.

1 man and 2 man
I have a TNF Mountain Marathon that wieghs 3 lbs. flat and it is $200 and it is a incredible 1 man tent light and easy set up and pretty roomy. 24 sq. feet. My recomendation for a 2 person is the SD Ultra Flash. It wieghs about 3.5 lbs. Its about 250 and pretty decent. I recomend both of them because the straight up rock. So thats what I consider the best. The aren't free standing but the rock so the trade off is pretty good.

I am all about Black Diamond
I can't find a Mega Light on the web for less than list price.

I don't need one until Fall, so I will keep my eye out for a bargain.

If any of you find a deal post it.

Like others have said there is no perfect tent and if you hike in all seasons you'll probably want more than one shelter.

How does one goe about setting up a Megalite or Betalite? What do you do first?

Put the stakes in the four corners.

Raise the center pole.

Adjust the corner stakes.

put in the other four stakes.

If you find a perfectly flat area you may not have to adjust the corner stakes, but that never happens.

You can also suspend the peak from a tree limb or a line strung between two trees and then stake down the corners and sides. I prefer to do that wherever possible. It's a simpler, quicker process and you eliminate the center pole. If you use the line strung between two trees it's best to tie a loop in it and then tie the peak to that so the tent peak stays put.

I still borrow my brother's MH. As much as I want/need a tent, I can't bring myself to buy it. I've talked it up alot but haven't taken the plunge. I may be waiting to save the money for a Hilleberg, I don't know.

Has anyone tried sewing mosquito netting along the bottom of a megamid to make it better during bug season? How hard would that be to do with the sil-nylon version? (for someone with absolutely no sewing skills.)

What I'd really like to do is make a sil-nylon shelter based upon the Trekker Tarp only 4' tall. I wonder if I could staple it together. ;)

I just use this hung from the peak and tucked in around the thermarests. I found it at an REI scratch-n-dent sale super cheap. It was missing the spreader bar which I wouldn't use anyway. If you tuck it taut it stays out of your face. It's more than big enough to go around both our thermarests and I really think that it could encompass the entire interior, though I haven't tried it yet. It would probably be much to big for one person but you might be able to find a smaller one.

It's a good no-sew solution for us.

My tee-pee is the Dana Designs Nuk-Tuk which comes with an 'air liner' which is a mosquito net inner tent with a floor. I haven't carried it in a long time because it adds too much weight which is why I'm thinking about just putting about a foot of netting along the bottom of the Mega Light. I've heard sil-nylon isn't so easy to work with and I have no clue with sewing but I could maybe, possibly do it. I guess I could also use one of the sail making shops around here.

The biggest problem with sewing silny that I know of is that it's so freaking slippery. If you hot-glue the seam before you sew it that problem disappears. Just be careful to use a thin line of glue and then don't sew through it. It'll really gum up your sewing machine!
