Yah 100 strokes does seems excessive, doesn't it? I pump about 50 times to get it pressurized, then I light it. Then I pump like crazy to keep it pressurized while its warming up. Usually about another 50 times. Mine's pretty old too, about 12 years, although it's only been used a few times. I'll try oiling it to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks guys for all the Coleman suitcase stove advice. Hopefully this trip goes well. I'm bringing my backpacking stoves as well as water filtering and treatment stuff to show the kids, for badge work. I'm hoping to interest them in backpacking.

Lyndy, have a good time on the trip. I hope the weather is good for you.

Thanks, Rich, I think it will only rain Sat afternoon-evening. I'm packing for wet weather, warm weather and chilly weather. Luckily I had a covered tub of firewood, because some people had wet wood since it has rained all month.

It's supposed to rain here too. I was going to go on a combination backpacking fishing trip, but the creeks are still too high and with more rain coming it isn't looking like it will get much better.

Hee, hee, Limpy, that WASN'T the dumb thing I was doing wrong. The instructions were written for a double burner and mine is a triple burner. Since I set it up in the corner of my deck, I was standing to the left of the stove. The directions showed an auxilliary valve on the left. I closed it and started the grill. Duh ... there is another auxilliary valve on the other side and it was slightly open, as it turns out. They both should be shut while first lighting the stove. Then you open one and light that burner, then the other and light it. Worked great once I figured that out.

Just got back from a field trip to an art museam with the fourth grade. Now to pack the car.

Lyndy
Starting those Coleman white gas stoves involves two pressurizing efforts. First I pump it about 50 times. Then light it. Then continue pumping for about 30 to 40 more times until it roars to life. Otherwise they act all finicky and threaten to ignite everything around or blow up.

You should get a blue flame and a bit of a roar if you do it right.

Also, remember to turn that little needle into the upright position when you light it. Don't know what it does, but it is a necessary step. When it's going good, you turn the needle to the down position.

Like they said earlier, to use the other burners, turn the main one up high.

Hi! I'm back and I didn't blow up the girl scout camp or ignite anything on fire. The stove worked great and we made a full breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes for 34 campers! I didn't think we had a chance of pulling that one off. The other troops at the site handled lunch and dinner. The rest of the meals were cold one.

It poured all day Sat. These kids were soaking wet because they would walk around and then change, walk around and then change. We had 24 hours left on the trip and the kids had no dry clothes. I hope they learned something from that experience.

Well Dang. No fires? You're not Really car camping unless you see at least ONE firetruck, LOL

Too bad the Scouts got all pruney and everything, <G>. Constant rain does cut back on the occurance of fire...

oh yeah...

Coleman 2-burner propane
(which works FINE except for the ignition switch)
Whisperlight

I found one interesting thing about the old Coleman 2-burner...

When I opened it up to replace that ingition switch, There Was Over A Quarter Inch Of Bacon Grease in the bottom of it!

<YECH>

Do you think that might be a Bear Magnet or somethin'??

That's quite a task to cook for 34 people out in the woods. At least the stove worked for you. The weather was wet here too with an all day rain that amounted to 1 inch. At least today was dry.

I've converted my old Coleman 3 burner car camping stove to propane. I use a 10 pound propane tank and hose to hook up the propane converter. It works great...no priming, no pressure problems, no big flames...and it will simmer just fine and will also boil a gallon of water in short order. It's great if we're there for more than a weekend.
