Oh these postings of BS will surely piss off ENS. He so dislikes this type of thread.

BTW. Who made him the boss.

Personally, I like BS.

www.mugglenet.com posted the cover illustrations of the American version, plus both kids' and adults' British versions of book 6. Sa-WEET! It also posted a link to an interview with Arthur Levine, an editor with Scholastic. It's quite revealing.

Can ya tell I'm excited?! =:D

Don't worry Currahee, I'll be doing the nerd thing too! One funny thing is I recently got a brooch that's 18k gold, coiled like a snake with a very nice emerald where the head would be. I never pegged myself as a Slytherin but what the hell...
Last time around there was an HS honors lit teacher dressed as Madam Hooch; she was perfect!

Luckily I have kids so I have a reason to dress like Hagrid and go to the book release party at B&N. Last book I had my son that was still crawling dresses in a green full length pajamas with a plastic plant stuck to a hood on top of his head. He was my mandrake.

CB, you have to remember that book 1 was written for kids around 11 years old. They get progressively better, believe me. I think book 1 is the longest intro I've ever read. Book 4 is incredible.

i know they were written for young kids. thats why it surprises me that they are so popular with adults.

The funny thing about books is that bookstores are jam packed with them? Why isn't there just a handful that everyone likes?

“i read the first book”

If the first book didn't hook ya in then it probably just isn't for you. I find the writting to not be beneith adult reading; which is a big switch because normally books are dumbed down for kids. I think the first book spent huge amounts of time just introducing all the characters and Hogwarts. The books after it are much faster.

my 9 yo has read all 5 books. she just finished Enders game, too. Books don't have to be dumbed down.

these books are as...
complex a universe as any ever created. there is deep history that is only touched briefly. there are animals and creatures that haven't even been discussed, there is a bit of romance, and even humor. To say that these books are bland and watered down is a silly thing. These books are among some of the greatest fantasy literature ever concieved.

The fact that they are hugely popular is a testiment to the worthieness of the story and plot lines. It shows that this genre is here to stay and I would think that JRRT would be proud of what is being written in the Potter series. It is in direct descent from LOTR.

Its my opinion that what made these books so popular is not that there is anything original in it, its just that she took concepts developed by others and marketed them to a whole new audience ... moms of pre-teens (and dads). Most of the mothers had never read fantasy and once a few read them and found that they enjoyed reading them with their kids it became a huge word of mouth thing in the "stay-at-home" set. These mothers were finding the fun and beauty of fantasy without the gore and killing of most other fantasies. And a damn well told story to boot. The themes of friendship, loyalty and learning also sparked their maternal side.

Funny you should say that, hyway. I've always been a fantasy fan but several years ago, I caught wind that some religious activists wanted the first book banned and had to check it out. I read the back cover and decided immediately that it was just the kind of book I would have enjoyed as a kid. I bought it and read it to my kids. My oldest is 11 now and she has read the first five. We have all the movies out on DVD thus far. -- I don't think it's just marketing. I think she's an awesome writer and as with all awesome writers, it's not the topic, it's how it is written. She's great!

The first I ever heard of Harry Potte was when Prisoner of Azkaban had just come out. My mom advised me that my niece wanted it fr her birthday, so I picked it up. Later, my wife borrowed the first 5 books from her mom. My wife was reading the first, so I picked up the second and thought I'd see what all the fuss was about.

Needless to say, I rather enjoyed book two, so grabbed book one and read it while my wife was busy with other stuff. Now I am hooked. I've read the series 4 times through (well, almost, I am nearly finished with book 5 again) and get something new out of them every time. There are so many levels to the books it is astounding. The humor is great, and trying to pick up on Rowling's forshadowing has become a little hobby unto itself for me. So, yeah, I am eagerly awaiting July 16!

maybe ill give book 2 a chance, if indeed they do get progressively better as y'all say

i would challenge any potter pushers to go to their local comic book store and ask for "the sandman" or "the books of magic" by neil gaiman. they have alot in common with the potter books, but they are written for adults

We are looking forward to the release as well. This weekend we will pick up our pre-ordered copy of the book.

And since we aren't going to WV after all on the car camping trip, the boys and I are going to go to a book release festival held in Oak Park, Illinois tonight. They transform an area of their downtown into Diagon Alley and have Harry Potter-related activities for the kiddies.

We've never started the Harry Potter series but my daughter is now to an age she's interested. Since there are books that have come before this release and since I know nothing about the story line. Should we start with this new release or go back and start with book one?...does one build up to the next I guess is my question.

Definitely start at the beginning. You will appreciate it much more.

We have extra copies of Books 1, 2 and 3. (can't remember how we acquired them over the years.) Tucker was going to sell them in an upcoming garage sale for a couple bucks a piece. If someone wants them, he will sell each book for $2/each plus shipping. We have 2 copies of Book 1 (softcover), 3 copies of Book 2 (softcover), and 1 copy of Book 3 (hardback).

We went to the HP book release festival last night in Oak Park. The entire town has embraced the countdown to the HP book release. There were thousands of people milling around the village, many in costume. About 2 dozen of the businesses had transformed themselves into HPesque stores. US Bank became Gringotts. The candy store became Honeydukes. The Leaky Cauldron was there serviing butter beer. Crossroad Travel became Beyond Platform 9 3/4. There were vendors selling magic wands and all sorts of interesting trinkets. It was pretty amazing.

The most beautiful thing about the whole experience is that the kids are still sleeping now because of the late night!
