allegheny power owns a lot of land along the spectacular cheat canyon and big sandy creek, they wanted to sell it. at first they agreed to sell it to the state, but then suddenly decided to accept private bids. the state offered 9.4 million, but allegheny wood products corp. won the bid with 9.75 million. interestingly, the state offered $500,000 extra, but it was refused. WV did an incredible job trying to get this remarkable property.

the cheat canyon and big sandy creek are truly remarkable places with extensive cave systems, endangered species, waterfalls, rapids... now it may be logged.
i'm glad i saw it when i had the chance.

I saw a piece about that somewhere on the web. Wasn't sure where it was. Is it within the area of the Mon NF?

There is a really big issue in the Blackwater over whether the Feds will allow Allegheny Wood to use forest service roads to haul logs out. The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy and Friends of Blackwater are opposing opening the roads for logging.

Found it:
From the Grant County Press:

Allegheny Wood buys 5,600 acres
in Preston County
Allegheny Energy Inc. announced recently that a non-utility subsidiary, West Virginia Power and Transmission Company, has finalized a sales agreement to sell approximately 5,600 acres of non-utility property, along the Cheat River and Big Sandy Creek in Preston County, to Allegheny Wood Products Inc. The sale is part of an ongoing process of divesting property that does not fit with the company's strategic plans.

I think if you had named this thread: "Neo Conservatives and Flaming Liberals clash over Clinton/Bush legacy," it would have gotten a lot more attention than it did.
