Mountain Hardwear Waypoint 1View MessagesDoes anyone here own one??? “Looks like a pretty nice solo tent weighs in under 2.5 Lbs. for $195.00 Anybody have any coupon codes for REI???” 9:32:05 PM 6/07/03 “15% Off any one full price item, expires 7/15/03, GREATVALUE It was in this months Readers Digest” 9:57:59 PM 6/07/03 “I think BP mag had a review on it. It looks like a good solo option for me when I want to replace a Flashlight CD.” 8:03:53 AM 6/08/03 “I have one, but haven't got to use it yet. It looks good in the backyard. :)” 8:17:00 AM 6/08/03 “Well, since I don't have a local outfitter... I went ahead and ordered it, so I could get a good look at it. I like what I see online...but some things you just have to see in person. Thanks ldhiker you saved me $30.00!!! I finally used my dividend too! If'n I like it...I just dropped 3 full pounds from my pack!!!!!!!!!” 10:49:16 AM 6/08/03 “I think you'll like it.” 9:10:49 PM 6/08/03 “Dam, I'm good!” 9:14:05 PM 6/08/03 “What you may not like about the Waypoint 1 is the MH advertised weight is off by close to a pound or 33%. I sent mine back based on this alone - a pet peeve when companies just don't tell it like it is. I have also read that early reports indicate some condensation issues. Probably hit & miss - often depends on the climate where you'll hike. Another lightweight option is my favorite three season shelter, Henry Shires Squall Tarptent. Lighter and less money as I recall. - John” 9:35:30 PM 6/08/03 I Knew A John Macri “Hey Macri...Are you from W PA and went to SRU?” 9:47:24 PM 6/08/03 “....From upstate NY and went to Siena College. However, if you owe him money, send it to me - I'll be sure he gets it! - John” 5:01:34 AM 6/09/03 “Hey John - I went to the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY - not too far from Siena - it's a small world I had them weigh the Waypoint 1 at the local sporting goods store - it was 2 lbs 6 ounces with all the packaging. A friend has it - she said condensation is a bit of a problem, overall she likes the tent (especially the weight).” 10:08:46 AM 6/09/03 JGiles “You must get that tent out of the backyard! How about an overnight float trip this weekend on the Buffalo? Carver to Woolum 15.3 miles. The water is perfect and the weather looks like it will cooperate. Last weekend we (OHTA) floated Woolum to Tyler Bend and it couldn't have been better. You can pick up a canoe in Jasper..on your way. Err, out of your way a bit!” 1:28:43 PM 6/09/03 Welcome John Macri! “I surf you site quite a bit, but can't ever remember seeing you post here. Welcome! BTW, I like your site quite a bit.” 3:44:05 PM 6/09/03 11:42:42 PM 6/10/03 “yes, that's the friend's (trailtrekker's) tent - sure is lightweight” 12:12:25 AM 6/11/03 “Yep! thought that was the tent alright! Oh yeah, and the friend too! Are you going to Boulder Basin this weekend?” 12:20:03 AM 6/11/03 “Yes, I'm going to Boulder Basin, but I don't think I want to hike to the Summit of San Jacinto again - I did that last weekend from Humber Park. I'll look to see what other peaks are possible from Fuller Ridge. Maybe I'll do Folly - it's pretty close to San Jacinto.” 8:08:42 AM 6/11/03 “My tent came a day early...and nobody was home, so they left a door hanger instead of my tent...so I guess I will get it tomorrow.” 11:37:12 PM 6/11/03 “And when do you plan on the maiden voyage of that tent WindWalker” 10:15:56 AM 6/12/03 Never ! “Sent the thing back today. I set it up in the backyard...didn't like it. Condensation will definitly be a problem with this tent. Ordered the MSR Zoid 1 today. It's 8 ounces heavier but has a vestibule and is more to my liking.” 12:49:56 AM 6/13/03 Anything new on this tent? “I am considering this tent, but there were several negative reports on earlier posts. Does anyone have some real backpacking experience with it? What about the Waypoint 2?” 3:11:15 AM 2/10/04 It'd Be Good In Dry Climates “The only neg I remember regarding this single-wall tent is condensation inside...but what tent doesn't have this problem?” 5:03:45 AM 2/10/04 “I'm pretty sure in one review I read that they said this tent weighs 10 ounces more than Mountain Hardwear says it does.” 5:16:58 AM 2/10/04 “i had them weigh it at the store - pretty close to the advertised weight, but I'm happy with my bivy because it keeps me nice and warm at night without condensation problems.” 9:03:15 AM 2/10/04 “Funny how everyone is considering this tent. I love my MH Muir Trail but without llamas to haul it something has gotta give besides my back. I've decided to use it only when my son goes on trips with me. So I'm looking and my four top choices, in no particular order, are: 1) MH Waypoint 1 (2+lbs) 2) MH Wing 1 (4lbs. 1 oz.) 3) MH PCT 1 (3 lbs. 6 oz.) 4) MSR Hubba (unsure but I believe between 3 and 4 lbs.) and freestanding. The Waypoint is the only single-walled tent on the list. Opinions on the other three anyone?” 1:43:28 PM 2/10/04 “The hubba is impressive.” 1:51:08 PM 2/10/04 Big Agnes. 1:57:07 PM 2/10/04 Crap... 1:58:28 PM 2/10/04 “I was reading about the Seedhouse tent...it comes with 13 stakes ??” 2:23:04 PM 2/10/04 13? “I wonder what in the heck they need 13 for? one in each corner = 4. Add two for the vestibul = 6. I have had a freestanding tent REQUIRE 10 stakes that came with an extra 3 for guy lines = 13 stakes. Can't imagine a freestanding tent using 13.” 2:38:15 PM 2/10/04 “Yeah I saw this tent too but forgot about it. I like the idea of aluminum hubs. It's definately a viable option. The Hubba has hubs but don't know if they're plastic or metal. Oh wait, it's made by MSR, more than likely plastic.” 3:22:41 PM 2/10/04 “There is one more option but it's really out of my price range. The Hilleberg Akto (sp?). It's $335. That is what makes the MH Wing attractive. Notice that the Wing and the Akto are really very similar in design. The Wing is heavier but it has two looped poles at the end whereas the Akto only guys out the two ends of the inner tent. I have to admit that I really like MH becuase the tents seem bombproof. I really want to see this tent set up and weigh one on a scale.” 3:27:46 PM 2/10/04 Waypoint One “Yes, Phil- I posted on the other thread (REI Roadster)about this tent. I love it and have had it since last May and have used it at least 20 times, from the Sierra to the desert. Only had condensation problem once, and it wasn't that big a deal.” 8:15:17 PM 2/10/04 Trailtrekker “Several questions. Did you encounter strong winds on any of those trips? From just looking at pictures (I haven't seen one set up yet) the only possible "weak" link in the tent might be the single post used to peak the "foot" end. Has that been a problem, say in a cross wind?” 9:28:06 PM 2/10/04 “ijust bought a mhw pct 1 and it weighs 3lb14oz and it is very roomy tent for a 1 person.” 9:52:20 PM 2/10/04 “Solitary - I think the current BACKPACKER gear guide had nothing but good things to say about the The Hilleberg Akto. Trailtrekker - thanks for the info. Have you been thru any rain with the Waypoint yet? How is it without a vestibule? The MHW PCT weighs as much as my Inyo 2, so it doesn't seem worth it. The Inyo 2 has been a good tent. I am just trying to shave off a pound or two from my packweight. I've ordered a ULA P-2 pack and am going to get a new sleeping pad also. The pack, tent, and pad savings in weight is around 8 lbs. I can save 1 lb with a new down bag and 1 lb on my bear cannister...10 lbs total. I am retiring my external frame ASAP.” 2:46:45 AM 2/11/04 “Phil, the Akto is nice but the price. I went to the Hilleberg site last night and it's listed at $345. Too rich for my blood. Who makes the pack you were talking about? DeoreDX, the Big Agnes tent is looking very attractive and it's at my pricepoint. I won't need mine till late next summer. If you buy one early be sure to give us a full report.” 7:24:19 AM 2/11/04 “loosing 8lbs is great good going phil” 7:30:08 AM 2/11/04 “Well I probably won't buy one... this ultralight wanker thinks even the new speedlite speedhouse tents are too heavy ;) I do so love my tarptent though.” 7:56:52 AM 2/11/04 “Solitary- Not really strong winds, but a few decent gusts- no problems so far. If the single post at the end does fail, it wont matter terribly because there is a line to stake out from at the end, the pole just gives a little more foot room. Phil- Some rain and hail, but nothing I would count as a full night/day downpour, so that is a bit of an unknown. It did well in the weather I encountered. Not having a vestible is sort of wierd at first, but my boots fit under the edge, and I have just learned to cover up my pack. Haven't had a situation where I have had to cook "indoors" in any of my tents, so I don't miss the vestible too much. There is ample room to keep stuff above your head or at shoulder sides. It is wider than it appears from the outside.” 8:50:25 AM 2/11/04 “trailtrekker - Thanks! I am seriously considering the Waypoint 1. I really like the lower weight. Oh, yes. How many stakes does it need?” 8:50:41 PM 2/11/04 “FYI - I know that the Akto is expensive, maybe you can find one used or on "special" on the Hilleberg site. I use just the outer most of the year and that sucker gets down to 2 lbs. Keep looking, Phil. Big knock on the Akto: Of course it's not freestanding. Big issues? I don't know, I'll let y'all know how is goes when I pitch it in over a foot and a half of snow this weekend :)” 9:32:32 PM 2/11/04 “Hodgeman or someone I think had an akto on Sierrapalooza. Looked very solid. After getting the Inyo 2, it doesn't bother me to have a non-freestanding tent. Except what you seem to save in poles, you make up for with stakes.” 1:12:24 AM 2/12/04 Stakes “Phil - NEEDS 5, better with 11. I know that sounds like alot, but that is staked out for wind and condensation. It is really important to stake out the sides- there is a mesh "strip" about 3 inches wide all along the bottom of the walls-helps with the condensation. 9 stakes is ideal, but carry 2 extra for windy conditions. It's still worth it.” 1:33:05 AM 2/12/04 “trailtrekker - Was hoping it was not that many just to save on weight, but a non-freestanding tent usually takes more (except the Stephensons, I guess). My Inyo 2 takes 10 stakes. I tend to stake down well just in case. Thanks!” 1:54:39 AM 2/12/04 “Maybe get those titanium stakes??” 2:27:18 AM 2/12/04 “trailtrekker - After SierraPalooza last year, I may be willing to do that to save the weight. I must admit I have coveted those stakes. My son works for Sport Chalet (in the Mountain Shop!) and at least I get a discount.” 3:24:23 AM 2/12/04 “Well, I bit the bullet and bought a Waypoint 1 today. They were on clearance for $139 plus tax. We pulled it out of the box at the store and looked it over. I can't see why it would have any more condensation than my Inyo 2. After taking out all the unnecessary stuff, it weighed 2.6 lbs...including stakes. It looks roomier than I thought it would. Interesting ventilation system with the vents around the bottom.” 1:58:04 AM 3/21/04 “Congrats!! You're continuing to get that weight down, I see. That's a good price and great weight. Wonder if my carbon-fiber poles will work with it. Have to look into that. Hmm...I also wonder how it handles in a thunderstorm with high winds.” 2:13:27 AM 3/21/04 “tekdude - Good questions. I like the shape...similar to the Inyo 2. That shape seems to withstand winds pretty well. I am concerned about rain, of course, but have only been rained on a few times in my last 8 years of backpacking. The zippers looked very watertight and are covered by flaps. Zippers were a concern until I saw the design. (If I was going on a hike where I was confident of rain, I would always have the choice of taking the Inyo 2).” 9:59:10 AM 3/21/04
