Packing an Arcteryx 80 “It's been a while since I've bp'd [2yrs] and since I've visited this site. I'm getting ready to take a couple nights out with my son. My question is my pack has the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom but how and where do I pack the tent? The bp is the Arcteryx 80 and it's at least 3 years old. I've used it a couple times but I can't remember how I pack my tent. Should I strap it somewhere on the outside or under the day pack on top, or under [the bottom of] the pack? Thanks!” 1:55:37 AM 6/10/03 “Personally, I would probably pack the soft parts of the tent inside the pack just above the sleeping bag compartment. The poles and stakes, I would strap them vertically somewhere on the outside of the pack, or tuck them under the day pack comparment on top. My suggestion is to fill your pack ahead of time and experiment with how to best attach the poles and stakes onto the outside of the pack. Walk around a little bit and see how well they hold up.” 3:42:14 AM 6/10/03 Up Top Inside “I usually put the tent at a spot where it is the first item out when unpacking...like right on top all your stuff inside the pack. Because when I get to camp, setting up my shelter is the first thing I do. And when it's raining you don't want to unpack everything else inorder to get to the tent cause yer crap will get wet.” 4:58:29 AM 6/10/03 “I've always just strapped my tent to the bottom of my pack.” 8:05:10 AM 6/10/03 “You also want to carefully consider what you're going to do with your tent and fly if (when) they're wet. Finding that your wet fly from the morning dew or rain has dampened everything else in your pack is not much fun... :)” 9:48:25 AM 6/10/03 “For me, it's tent and fly on one side, using a long narrow stuff sack, and ground sheet with poles and pegs on the other” 10:01:26 AM 6/10/03 Nooobie here “I just bought an Arc'Teryx Bora 80, mint pack! I have zero hiking exprience yet, at least til this coming Saturday at Pa-paloosa :-) I have practiced alot and have packed and unpacked my bora 80 at least 20 times.... The bottom compartment of the pack holds my TNF Cats Meow bag in a sil-nylon stuff sack in the bottom and I put the TNF Pebble tent also in a sil-nylon stuff sack in the bottom compartment too, along with a 4 x 8 3 oz. sil-nylon ground cloth It all fits in the bottom compartment fine. They each have individual bags to not get anything else wet.... The Bora 80 has a cool pass thru system with a nylon separater with a draw string so the gear in the top of the bag will not be affected by the bottom gear(tent, bag, tarp) I had room for the poles and stakes on the inside and put them as close to my back as i could. they have their own bag too, not to interfer with anything and too keep the weight high and close to my back... I hope I helped :-)” 11:57:11 AM 6/10/03 arcteryx “thanks for the advice! my sleeping bag is to bulky to fit both it and the tent in the bottom compartment. i need a new bag. i'll play arround the other ideas as well. thanks!” 3:05:50 PM 6/10/03 Boo 3:08:02 PM 6/10/03 “My husband has the Arc'teryx Bora 80; is this the same pack you have? He packs both the sleeping bag and tent in the bottom sleeping bag compartment *but* his thermarest and camp chair won't fit in the pack with everything else. So, he straps them on the bottom using the straps that are on the pack. He puts them in a trash bag to keep them dry. This works very well. He attaches the tent pole on the outside of the pack vertically and snug against the pack. Hope this helps ¦ ) .” 7:34:27 PM 6/10/03 “I have used the Bora 95 for a few years now, and I also put the tent in the bottom compartment with my bag. Everyone like to carry their weight differently. I like all my heavy things either on the bottom of the pack, or as low as I can get them. Others like the weight distributed close to the back but not necessarly at the bottom. Try packing it different ways and walk around a bit. If your bag is to large, put it in a compression sack. They work pretty good. Oh, by the way, I put the tent poles either in the pack standing in one of the corners against my back or I strap them on one of the out sides. The other out side I strap my thermorest. I like to have my load as balanced as possible. Good Luck and Have fun on your trip!” 11:17:40 PM 6/10/03
