Farm Animal Welfare Council in Great Britain has called for the end to the method of slaughtering cattle for Kosher and Halal meat – slitting their throat and letting them bleed to death. The current law requires the animals to be stunned first but makes an exemption for religious slaughter.

This has caused quite an uproar from those who see it as an attack on religion. They say that when the throat is slit, the brain is immediately starved of oxygen and the animal loses consciousness so they don’t suffer. The BBC quoted one person as saying “Everything about the Islamic way of life is under attack so it makes you wonder if this is actually about humanity to animals.”

Is it appropriate for a government to ban this practice or does religious freedom take precedence?

whatever is the most humane way is the way it should be done. im not a medical expert, but i wouldnt think slitting their throats would cause immediate death.

Who cares about the cow? If it has to do with Islamic religion it should be banned >:(

Yes, the government is charged with protecting animals from cruelty. Religion is no justification, although this is just typical...just typical.

Is cutting their throats any more cruel than hitting them in the head with a sledge hammer?

It's a tough one.

The way I see it, the throat slitting was probably as safe and sanitary as you could get at one point. Now we can do better.

Humane killing of animals is an ancient pre-occupation for monotheists and pagans. Artemis protector of animals and Goddess of the hunt, was said to have a special fury for the hunter who wounded an animal but did not quickly kill it.

The animals do not suffer. The blade they use is so sharp they don’t even feel it. The animal loses consciousness immediately and doesn’t even feel it. It is no more cruel than a bolt to the head. The treatment of animals is such an important thing in Judaism. That is why the law of cutting the throat is there in the first place. There is also the requirement that ALL blood be drained from the body before butchering. This can not be done as well if the animal is bolted in the head THEN cut.

I can only imagine what people in countries where you have to go out and knock dinner on the head must think this. “WTF?”

I need to retract my statement concerning kosher slaughter being instantaneous. Upon reading more it appears that nothing is. Surprisingly the biggest concerns are the type of restraint methods used and their effects on the stock. The cattle’s reaction to the restraint is much more than the actual cutting.

Religious slaughter and animal welfare:
a discussion for meat scientists.
Meat Focus International - March 1994 pages 115-123
Published by : CAB International

“In all three restraint systems, the animals had little or no reaction to the throat cut. There was a slight flinch when the blade first touched the throat. This flinch was much less vigorous than an animal's reaction to an eartag punch. There was no further reaction as the cut proceeded. Both carotids were severed in all animals. Some animals in the modified ASPCA pen were held so loosely by the head holder and rear pusher gate that they could have easily pulled away from the knife.

These animals made no attempt to pull away. In all three slaughter plants, there was almost no visible reaction of the animal's body or legs dunng the throat cut. Body and leg movements can be easily observed in the double rail restrainer because it lacks a pusher gate and very little pressure is applied to the body. Body reactions during the throat cut were much fewer than the body reactions and squirming that occurred during testing of various chin lifts and forehead hold-down brackets.”

I prefer strangulation with bare hands. If that doesn't work try standing on their neck and stomping their guts out.

On second thought that might be alittle gruesome. How about just slitting their throat?

Oh, I don't care about the feelings of food animals. My only concern is contamination and that they don't overly stress the animal at slaughter as that imparts a bad flavor to the meat and also makes it tough. (no, I'm not kidding about that either.)

Ah yes, "feelings of food animals..."
Amazing how much some folks anthropomorphize food animals. Remember when PETA opposed a Cow-Patty Bingo fundraiser because they felt it was "demeaning" to the cow.

I grew up around lots of dairy farms. Your average cow wouldn't know demeaning if it walked up and slapped it on the rump. Your average dairy cow actually wouldn't know much of anything, they're one of the stupidest creatures on four legs.

I did a few stories about this several years ago. Every year there's this battle between protestors and the religius types over this stuff. If your gonna eat meat then who's to tell if a knife to the throat of a few thousand volts through the head is the worse way to die?

Who gives a crap about the humane death sentancing of cows? Cows are stupid animals. They take up too much space. Their poop pollutes waterways. The amount of grain fed to cows each year could support several 3rd world countries and dramaticaly ease world starvation figures.

So who cares if they are zapped or the throat is cut? Both sound better to me than being clubbed to death.

Aren't there more important issues at hand? Like dancing circus bears? That's an issue I''d back up as I hate seeing dancing circus bears (no bear should every be forced into a silly outfit and made to dance)

If I were Jewish I'd be really ticked off that a group of animal rights freaks were trying to ban an extremely sacred aspect of my religious life. And also, what right do they have in telling me how my food should be prepared as long as it is disease free and sanitary?

What's next - free the pickles?
