Should I cut off the sternum strap?
from my daypack? It is a nice North Face pack. Don't remember the cu. in. right off. It has the sternum strap and the waist strap. I hate the sternum strap most of the time and it bothers me. I hate to mutilate the pack. There are times when I really am glad the sternum strap is on there. When I am climbing up something nearly vertical.. or completely vertical I'm glad its there. It keeps the pack stable against my body. It just hits me wrong. there are .... things in the way of it.... and I can't do nuthin about that...

Maybe I shouldjust buy another pack that is contoured? i really need to get this whole deal resolved before I purchase a backpack. I can adapt gear. I cannot adapt my anatomy. (which is too bad)

If you post a picture of the problem areas, we'll be much better able to offer advice.

I wouldn't cut it off if you use it from time to time, but since I lack 'things' I do not have any other good advice on how to resolve the problem. Some bad advice would be to cut it off in a way that it would just slide down the shoulder strap when you weren't using it, but when you needed it you could slide it back up into place.

HE said
(thank you for not laughing)

somebody (wont tell who cause he posts here and might spank me)
told me to cut the sternum strap off due to 2 noticeable attributes.

I did take a picture. It wouldn't make it past the censor.
Sorry man.

I am just trying to figure out what to do.

I take it is sewn on and not held in place with a ladder lock buckle? Most sternum straps I have seen are removable. They will be on a larger pack foh sho.

If it bothers you that much, cut the strap off. If you find you miss it, you can always buy a new one and have it sewn on at the shoe repair shop.

Don't wanna confine those assets...

Somebody donate some webspace so we can see the pics to better..."analyze" the problem!

Webshots would take it.

Actually it sounds to me like you need a pack designed for a woman. Not that I have any experience with that.

Dana - this is something I do with my daypack because the strap is too high for me (pack is too small for my frame and the sternum strap irratates my neck) - take a 'biner and a loop of boot lace, slip the sternum strap through the loop and the waist strap through the 'biner, adjust the size of the loop to pull the sternum strap down and away from the areas that get irritated. YMMV but this works well for me and as a side benefit the loop plus 'biner works well for hanging your pack on a tree or poll - wrap the doubled loop around the tree and hook in with the 'biner then hang pack from 'biner.

Thanks HOI, I will try it
I like the idea and have several biners laying around and I also have an extra pair of bootlaces that will work perfect. If it doesnt work... I may do like the first person suggested and cut it off. Like Rosey said, I can always have it restored if I need to.

danababy...
I'd be happy to come up your way and consult on the delima you seem so be suffering from...maybe with "close hand" evaluation, I could recommend a solution that would work for you (and me).

Oh i know!
I will go up to the gear store this week and wear my existing pack. I will let the guy who usually helps me decide on gear purchases take a look at the darn thing. He can probably help me get one of those packs that curves in at the sides so it fits my little body better. I am skinny in the shoulders. I also want one of those packs that has the mesh on the back so its cooler to wear. Dueter makes one I think.

Yes. A good pair of shoulder straps should curse to accomodate your neck and chest.

Hot durn!
On closer inspection I have discovered the problem with the sternum strap. It Does slide! Somebody with no hoo hoo's has been wearing it and has rearranged it til it is like wearing an iron maiden when *I* put it on! I will leave it in the uncomfortable position for now so it is pitiful to see me with it on. I'll whine and complain for a day or two. Then on Saturday Hairy Beast will say "oh poor little thing. Go ahead and get that nice Deuter pack you've been wanting." hee hee!

Stikmon its cause
He knew the magic words. Thats how it works. You are too sweet! The guy at the gear store was funny. He was shaking trying to help me. I guess he is a nervous sort. Nice fellow though. I went to the LRTC and found out one of my friends is working there! She's so lucky. That would be like playing every day.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!I can't believe I fell into this trap........drooling over and complimenting some distant, fairly anonymous person fishing for attention on their tataas and who posts a half naked of herself on the internet. I know it's all just for fun, but really now.
