Every time the US tries to broker a Mideast peace agreement, renewed fighting breaks out.

because the pali terrorists always blow up civilians to derail the talks.

IMHO the problem is that extremists on both sides think that they can prevail and so they seek to derail peace plans. Rabin was assassinated for making peace, as was Sadat, etc. Pali terrorists blow up civilians because it's what they CAN do ... they're a little short on APaches and Abrams.
The IRA did the same. One mans terrorist is another freedom fighter. Hell, we nuked the JApanese for pete's sake.

The Israelis need to get the hell out of those wacky settlements, set up a Pali State and then hunker down. If Hamas, etc., keeps up their terror then the Israelis would be totally justified in any response.

If I offended anyone with the use of the word wacky I apologize, but this religious strife is ridiculous.

Wow, the first post from Tom Terrific that I completely agree with.

I have always thought that the US response needs to be sensitive to the audience.

In the US life is held sacred, so terrorists aim to kill people.

In the Mid East life has less value than their religion, so an appropriate response is 20 B52 loads of pig excrement dumped on a temple, a new source of income for Iowa hog farmers.

I like TTs idea.

It amazes me that this bunch of religious zealots is able to keep the world enthralled....got us by the short ones.

I've been told by a bible beater that the good book says that if they make peace ( ie., land for peace )that it will be the end of times. Huh? So we should want them to go on killing? Maybe this is why W doesn't get more forcefully involved.

Years ago one of my young daughters was watching the news with me during a report on this same stuff. She asked why they were fighting over such an ugly place. MMMMMM!?

Thanks Manuka!

If we hose all those jokers with piggy stuff maybe they will feel about themselves they way they feel about "those not of their faith".

Since both sides have an aversion to hogs and each feels that the other is $h!t in God's eyes maybe my wicked plan would make them feel as equals and stop killing one another.

There is something specially reprehensible about terrorism where the primary goal is to kill civilians. I believe this.

What's weird is that the people who are loudest in saying that Hamas and groups like them are especially reprehensible because of their attacks on civilians treat all guerilla warfare the same. For example, the attack that derailed these talks (by provoking Sharon's assination attempt at a Hamas leader) was an attack on soldiers.

The Bush administration isn't demanding that all Arab nations stop aid to groups that target civilians, they are using the broad brush of "terrorism" to push for a cut off opf aid to all groups that use guerilla methods - even when it is aimed at purely military targets.

It is a double standard to demand a cut off of support to all groups that use military force against Israel and to demand dramatic actions against everyone who does - and then to keep up mega aide to Israel while they continue their program of assinations (targetted killings).

The conundrum
When we try to broker a peace, they fight more intensely. When we don't try to broker a peace, it's all our fault for not doing anything. HeII, turn the problem over to the French! Let them solve it!

I guess whether you think the US should be involved in the middle east depends on whether you think it was right to invade one of the countries in the region (if the middle east doesn't matter than why invade Iraq?), if you think Islamic terrorism as a whole has its roots in the conflict and if you think peace in the region is good for America's strategic aims.

The attempt to help with the process is in Americas interest, it's not completely altruistic.

Wasn't there a thread here once about parachuting into Afganistan a battalion of espresso drinking, cigarette smoking French existentialists to convince them that there is no god and to stop fighting? Sounds like it might be useful here.

The terrorists consistently target civilians, and Israel responds like any nation should, by going after those responsible. There is no way to justify killing 30 people in a bus. An attack on soldiers by the terrorists is rare compared to the number of attacks on civilian targets such as buses and restaurants. Israel never cranks up its attacks until the terrorists start it again. The terrorists won't be happy until all Israelis are gone. Giving up some land won't stop it. The leader who was wounded made the statement from the hospital that they would "drive the Zionists into the sea."

Can't them bastards separate, send them to opposite sides of the mid-east until they can grow up and realize they are more alike than different? Anybody want this joint, I puffed, puffed... it's time for a pass

My best friend, who is a devout Christian, but I wouldn't say 'Bible beater' also believes this theory. The first time I heard it was from her. She thinks that perhaps W does have a more divine mission here on Earth, and the fact that Bush is meeting a lot of resistance from home is all part of the plan.

I'm not completly convinced this theory is true, but its intriguing.

Glad to hear that someone else has heard this wacky story also. By bible beaters I mean fundalmentalists. The person I know doesn't buy it, but says that those folks believe that peace will bring war, so war is peace. ( uh oh, here come the Jimi Hendricks lyrics again.) Go figure. Utter nonsense. There is very strong support for Israel among conservative Christians.

I'm not really informed enough to say weather we should be doing this or not. I do think that if there is a Pali state it will make things much more clear cut for Israel. With an actual border I feel they will be more justified in dealing with futer attacks. Let's face it, Hamas will never stop attacking.

Hello-oo!
This stuff has been going on a lot longer that NetanYahoo! or The Bushes have been around. Think CENTURIES or MILLENIA!
W's (and others) main concern is to keep enough of a lid on things to maintain the barrels per day. Anyone seen the latest bill from Haliburton? Who do you think really benefits? And who is the watchdog? The American press, who casually "reports" it on a Sunday afternoon? Thanks, Michael & Rupert! Luvya, trustya!
I don't know, sometimes I think I'm getting cynical.
Anyway, inspired by other posters, here is my peace plan: We get a tanker full of scrapple and get it aerosolized - I know this guy from Maryland...Then we get a bunch of Roshashanna and Ramadan greeting cards.
After they're all in a boiled pig stupor, we sneak in and replace all of the bagel and kabob stands with Krispy Kreme stores - man, it must really be late...
