Story

I will miss his wry, droll wit.

I loved his bit on Jesse Helms.

Brinkley said Helms started as a radio tinhorn who was a product of tobacco money....a shill.

Aww, I liked him. Remember, you oldsters, the Huntley-Brinkley report?

There was a time several years ago when my dad (police captain) was involved in some kind of a big story. Calls were coming in from all the local news stations and a couple of the networks. One came in from "David Brinkley," and he just figured it was a staff person calling to ask a few questions about the situation who would then file a report that Brinkley would read on the air. But it was actually Brinkley himself doing the legwork. Refreshing.....

I used to love his comments when he covered political conventions with Chet Huntley. Something like this:

"Well folks, they are demonstrating for Governor Rockefeller down on the floor. They have bands playing and people yelling, confetti balloons, and they will be doing that for the next 15 minutes. It doesn't mean a thing. All of the people demonstrating are being paid to do it by the campaign committee, so all they are doing is just taking up time."

Saying "Chet Huntley and David Brinkley", helped many a child with his/her diction and enunciation back in the day.

I grew up watching Huntley and Brinkley, often at the kitchen table during dinner. Same time period that I remember watching Red Skelton. :(

Sad that these old journalists are dying. When Walter goes, I'll be really sad.

Huntley and Brinkley were the NBC news broadcasting team back in the 50s and 60s. Huntley died years ago.

they had the best theme music too. I forget exactly what it was, but hearing it gives me flashbacks. Beethoven's 5th or something like that.

Huntley & Brinkley together again. Yes, I can just hear the Glorious Ninth.

And I well remember what he said about Helms... a prehistoric Limbaugh, <G>

good one tiltimous maximus, i saw some exerps from that, it was good.

they say brinkley turned more conservative-libertarian in his later years...i saw a guy interviewed wednesday(can't remember who it was but it was on mcnair-lerrah i think) and he was recalling a conversation with brinkley in the last year or two where brinkley was revealing his disgust with the overbearing tax system, poilitical correctness, and the failed wastefull wellfare system....
