Looking to get a Kayaking/canoeing trip together. Looking for a place that has a little current but not a lot.

Anyone interested?

Looking for sometime in June or July. Any interest anyone?

Yes, we are interested. I am out of town the middle of July and have the kids the last week in July. Fourth of July weekend is a possibility.

You might consider the part of the Green River that runs through Mammoth Cave NP. I don't know how flat it is though.

I might be interested in such an excursion. Trust me, binks, unless you're an experienced whitewater paddler, you don't want to go anywhere near class lll water...

Ohio, eh??? Maybe we could paddle the Cuyahoga. I wonder if it still catches fire from all the pollutants...

No, but I bet you could still walk across it...

I'm open to suggestions.

I think the Red River Gorge area is pretty tame, although last summer it was so dry that one outfitter couldn't put his canoes out.

Actually, I've always wanted to do the Cumberland. A little closer to home for you, binks...

A little web-slinging research should turn up some info on KY and OH rivers suitable for some laid-back paddling.

The Cuyahoga - I think that's what Buddha and I paddled (ok, more like floated while drunk) on last summer.

I'm interested, if ya do something not too crazy. :) I'm very much an inexperienced paddler.

Suggest research Elkhorn Creek near Frankfort, KY ( mid way between Louisville and Lexington) When it rains its class 3, rest of the time just a nice paddle, dumps into the KY River. Not really known far and wide. I keep a farm on the north fork of Elkhorn near Switzer, KY. Doesn't get much use

We have two rivers (well, besides the Ohio) here in Cincinnati. the Big miami and the little miami. I would not call them competitive rivers, but I would say the at times the water does ripples and you might see a little white water.

I to am interested but very mutch a novice. I would not at all be intimited by those two rivers. Look up Morgan canoe rentals. They supply both rivers and would have all the information you need.

I did a kayak on the river at Big South Fork and that was a real sleeper. I would not recommend that one.

Is this the red-head?

I might be able to go on such a trip. The kids and I have canoed the Delaware River for 40 miles.

BSF canoeing
Leatherwood Ford to Blue Heron mine is a good 2 day canoe-camping trip. 25 miles total, mostly Class II, some Class III and a couple of Class IV+ to portage around. The best camping spot is probably on Big Island about 11 miles into the trip.

FYI
For those of you with little river paddling experience considering class 111/1V paddling, I present an excerpt from a review of the Chatooga river from an experienced paddler;

"By far, the most dangerous area on this section is Bull Sluice (pictured right). Author William Nealy once wrote, “The best thing about Bull Sluice is that ambulances can practically drive up to it.” Don’t be fooled even if you see swimmers without PFDs playing in the middle of the rapid. More people have died at Bull Sluice than anywhere else on the river. It’s mandatory to scout this beast, and if you run it, take all safety precautions, including throw ropes. Extreme caution is also necessary at Dick’s Creek, a technically difficult Class 4, and at The Narrows, a Class 3-4 rapid nearly a quarter mile long, with dangerously undercut boulders crowding the river on both sides. Multiple fatalities have occurred on both rapids."

I'm tellin' ya folks, unless you have the proper boat and the proper training and skills (I admit I have neither), don't try anything above class 11. Class 111 and 1V waters are dangerous!!!

Once more to hammer the point home...
"Class 3
Numerous rapids with high and /or irregular waves capable of swamping an open canoe. Rocks, holes, boulders, logs, or artificial obstructions usually present. Narrow passages that often require complex maneuvering. Scouting from shore is recommended. Considered the upper limit for open canoes. Requires frequent bailing. Suitable for advanced paddlers in open canoes and kayaks. Extra floatation or spray covers in canoes an asset.
Class 4
Powerful irregular waves, boiling eddies, or long rapids that often require precise maneuvering. Route not obvious. Scouting from shore usually required. Conditions may make rescue difficult. NOT suitable for open canoes. Suitable for expert paddlers in closed boats. Boaters should have a solid Eskimo roll."
