Tennessee Keeps Gettin Better
I am continually amazed by the beauty and recreational opportunities of this state! Went fun-yaking on the Hiwassee today and loved it. Its gorgeous. Going back to check out the hiking and camping opportunities there too! Its too much to take in during one trip.

I did a short section of the Hiawassee once. Lots of slow, easy fun.

You should try the Ocoee sometime if you haven't already. Faster, harder fun...

The Hiwassee
is in Polk County. Not too much further til yer in Georgia. LOL
My parents lived in Bradley Co. in Cleveland til a couple years ago. Dad is pushing to move back. Tons of stuff to do and see in that area. The Hiwassee is a great trout stream too. It was a good place to break in our kids to paddling today. They are now ready to try the Ocoee along with us. A fun-yak is a "duckie" or a two man kayak. It is made to be very stable and light weight. They don't turn over easily, but they also do not negotiate rocks well. Don't slide over them very easily which we were reminded of today. Webb Brothers Store is a great place to outfit from. The truck ride to the drop off point is as much fun as the trip down the river. Reliance suits me very well. I am from way out in the Boonies and grew up in an area like Reliance only not as much fun stuff to do. I was taking notes on the trails around and the camping opportunities.

Kids ages
Girl 16 and Boy 13. They loved it. Your kids would like this trip too though. It is safe for even little kids. We saw kids as young as 3 along with their families. Webb Brothers float service provides everything! You can choose between rafts which hold 4 people, fun-yaks which hold one or two persons, or inner tubes. They haul you 5 miles up the road to about Childers Creek put-in. The truck ride is hilarious. They provide life jackets. There are rest rooms at the store and at the put-in area. They have changing areas for dressing. They also have the coolest country store you can ever imagine! My Poppy had one alot like theirs. There are other outfitters around in case Webbs would be too busy, but they are so organized you don't wait long. I think we had a 10 min. wait when we pulled up. Takes about 2-3 hrs avg. to float the river back to the store. Then you go in ,Daddy... and buy drinks, candy and goodies to reward them young-uns for being good sports! I have taken some photos from today and will share them ASAP.

Hey thats super!
I like turtles! They are cute.
Glad you had such fun with your little men. I enjoy the company of my kids. They are fun people. Lots of personality.
I think this week I'm gonna go get my snorkel and mask and try the snorkeling thing. I can practice in the river across the road and in the hot tub at home! LOL Make sure I know what I'm doing before I take a trip down the Conasauga. Don't wanna drown my fool self. That will be a funny trip I have a feeling.

Conasauga
Strat, the Conasauga River originates in the N. Georgia Mtns and flows along the border in and out of Tennessee. Its course ends in Georgia. It is one of the most pristine, clear mountain streams around. I am used to river swimming and cold water so I should be able to stand it long enough to do some snorkeling. Darters are good in Arkansas too!? Thats great to know. There are supposed to be lots of those in the river there along with a number of other things. I will get one of those disposable, waterproof cameras to take on that hike/canoe trip.

Flyfishing
The Hiwassee is by far the best Dry Fly River in the South. Some of us used to take our boys here every spring. When the hatches are right there is a fog across the river. Hiwassee outfitters is a great place to car camp. It is directly upstream of Webbs store. Last year we had great success and landed over 30 fish. Couldn't keep them as one stretch of the river is a trophy area and you can only keep 2 fish with 14 inch minimum. This is one of my favorite places. Also the John Muir Trail follows the river up into the mtns.

Hi Karo!
I am not a fly fishing gal, but it looks like those who participate in it are having a good time. Didn't see anyone land anything while we were there on Sat. I knew the John Muir trail came out on the Hiwassee since we hiked part of it on two different trips. It is an all around beautiful area. I have played hard Fri., Sat. and Sunday. Whew. Momma is tired. =)

A co-worker of mine was hiking in Nashville ( with her church group) and saw a (hetero) couple at it on the hill behind Steeplechase at Edwin Warner Park. Must've been the warm weather - they glowed against the folliage.
