TEchnically, tes. I had to show somebody who brought one hiking how to use it. They's just taken it out of the box, crammed it in their pack, and forgot the instructions. There are some really nice lightweight ones available, but I don't know the brand names. If you gotta have your coffee, It's a good way to go.

I don't drink the stuff but hubby must have 3 or 4 cups in the a.m. or is a grouch till dinnertime. Last weekend we went up to Tobermory & I didn't pack enough instant for him! So I thought a good fathers day gift would be a press. He never backpacks with us-strictly carcamping, so we have lots of room to throw it in the trunk. I've never used one but someone told me that the coffee tastes better than the boil-on-the-stove perk thingy. I got the Outbound version. 1 litre I think.

folgers singles....it comes in a teabag...like tea does. and you just use one per cup and it makes real tasting coffee. lots better than instant and really light. you can fling the coffee grounds into the woods and burn the bag in the fire.

I'm really not--just that I've got to worry about gear for me and the three boys, plus the tent, food, reservations and all the rest of the camping stuff, so I really don't want to hear "is that ALL the coffee you packed???" when we get to camp

i guess i'll try them next time-- more bruce trail section-hiking planed for the summer. but the press is not going back. he can use it on fishing trip if it isn't to girl-y. Very hard to find a gift for a guy who has every tool ever made.

ok but I figure that if-once again-there isn't enough coffee packed then he can get 2 cups out of one portion using the press. one strong, one weak. kinda gross, but thats what I do with my tea bags. & maybe this will be án incentive to pack his own coffee, as no-one else touches the stuff.

5, 9, and 11. yeah i have to deal with that a little cuz i won't take them on a real backpacking trip unless they are 6. that' sour rule. but our 5 yr old is almost 6 and he's ready so i won't have to deal with that any more. we took one last year where only my 9 yr old wanted to go. we had a blast!

my guys were pretty good on the trail last weekend, no-one fell off the escarpment or broke any bones on the rocks ,and only one of them fell in the lake (twice!) but I don't think I would be able to control them if I took 2 or 3, especially the twins(6yrs old this weekend). Together, they are a force to be reckoned with. at least i would never have to worry about bears or moose if i have them with me, the noise level is enough to drive away all wildlife within a 5km radius. but my 7yr old is fantastic! great to hike with, VERY smart, so we have lots to talk about, self sufficient in a scary sort of way for a kid so young, and a warm sleeper, which is good for me in the hammock with him. I want to go bping with him more often, but there is a jelousy issue with the little guys.

next year will be better. i can only imagine having two oy my youngest! OH MY GOD! he's meaner than the other 2 put together! ! ! !

just tell them when they are 7 they can go also. maybe do a hike with just them, and do alot of day hikes to lead up to an overnighter. that's how i do it. i have them carry a pack on a dayhike, and do it alot.

I used to tell them that when they were 5 they could go with me, then it was when they were 6........haha. at least they like carcamping lots. and plus, I really don't want to give up on the hammock just yet, but if i took 2 kids if would be a little tight in there. guess i'll have to get another hennesy or something. 7yr old is able to take shelter in his pack i think... maybe the added weight will slow him down. of course he will walk faster to get away from annoying brother.

THe basic principal is you let the coffee solution and grounds stew for a couple minutes, then the press portion should compress all the grounds so you don't have any floaties.

Use one all the time. I like it so much I use it at home often. We had the lexan press, 16oz. But recently upgraded to the 32ozer, so we won't have to make two batches anymore. Aside from the bulk of it, it's great. I put food items I don't want crushed in the press while it's packed. It's dual purpose.

bringing up this topic again
I've always used a coffee press on the trail, and it works great. I've also always hated having to rinse out the used grounds - its just plain messy.

I heard about the tea bag stuff and bought some in the store the other day, Folgers.

Trying one at home now and I tellya, it's pretty darn good. Just boil a little water and dunk the bag for about a minute and boom, there's your coffee.

And, no messy grounds to fool with.
