Which gaiter
This has probably been covered a couple dozen times, but I want to hear opinions on gaiters before I break my piggy bank and buy a pair. The Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell Ventigaiters are $35 at REI (I have a 20% off coupon, so I ned to shop there.) Anyone have a pair of these?

I like my gaiters, they keep my legs from getting wet and scratched up in the summer, and they keep mud and stuff out of my boots all the time. I did get prickly heat under them once during the summer though.

I want to be able to wade through the creeks like the big boys and to not have to stop to pick pebbles out of my boots.

black diamond gaiters are by far the best made and best wearing gaiters I have seen.

Hyway, I don't know if the ventgators are what you want if you plan on wading through creeks. The vents will just give you one more place to leak, they're nylon not goretex. I think they're more for keeping your legs briar free, the snow outta your boots and the mud off your pants.

I just bought a pair at the garage sale last weekend (used once, $22). I've wanted some since I saw Evergreen's. The vents are sweet, should cut down on some of the condensation that usually shows up in my gaitors.

I've used Campmor's El Cheapo G-Tex gaiters for year, although they're more patch than gaiters - I think they're great, esp. for the money. For rougher and winter situations I now use the Outdoor Research Big Crocs - they are the same as the BD ones. They're great too, but a bit of overkill in mild situations.

I have a pair and have been using them for two years now.

They are not good for wading through creeks. If your foot gets more than a quick dip you WILL get soaked.

They are really good for keeping stones, rain, mud and crap out of your boots in hot climates (cause of the vents) but if you plan on doing a bunch of stream crossings, forget it. You are gonna get wet.

OR Crocodiles are a better choice for that.

I Love them...
I have them, they rock...as stated above, they are not intended to be waterproof, but they do a good job of keeping the rain out of your boots unless you are really getting hit, and I expect in that situation to be under my tarp waiting it out...

the vents work really well, and the velcro side seam facteners are less prone to problems than zippers...I replaced the Arch straps with parachute cord, which lasts longer, but will eventually get around to using steel cables like I did with the last pair.

Thanks for all the info. Guess I need to decide how important wading through a stream is going to be.
